Just seen Man city score after about 14 seconds on television, got me wondering what is our quickest and if there was any stats on it. I saw Deano score at Oxford uniteds old Manor ground after a only a handful of seconds some years ago. Was that the quickest?

Neville scored early on against Hereford in the first match of the 1981-2 season. I don't know what the actual timing of it was, but I'm pretty sure it was the first goal to be scored in the football league that season.

I saw Peter Withe score a header from an Edwards cross after about 18 seconds v Barnsley at The Lane in the mid 80's. I think we won 3-1 that day. Darren can put flesh on the bones......

Remember that clearly, at the Bramall Lane end. I think Edwards got the other 2 that day.

He can indeed. I saw that one as well..

It was 18th October 1985 and came from Barnsley's kick off. They were kicking towards the kop end and in those days the standard kick off tactic (Pinchy look away now) was to punt the ball as far down the wing as possible and send players after it, just to gain ground.

On this occasion, Barnsley decided to go the more cultured route of the neat past to the right just inside the United half to be picked up by a midfielder. Unfortunately for them, Joe Bolton anticipated the pass, got there first and knocked the ball down our left wing for Edwards to run on to. He galloped off down the wing and crossed the ball when he was about 20 yards out and Withe nodded in at the back post.

Edwards did indeed get the other 2 as we won 3-1.

Probably Ronnie Simpson after 8 seconds in the 2-1 win at Burnley in October 1963

The Ronnie Simpson one was the fastest that I ever saw. He scored again that day after 8 minutes. My United mad Uncle missed both due to him still "enjoying the hospitality" in Burnley's Directors box thanks to the generosity of my favourite player. That was after about 4 hours of travel to Burnley in the pre-M62 days.

We also scored after 8 seconds back in the 80's - think it was Flood against Wimbledon and the game ended 1-0, ie we could have gone home after the goal!

The Ronnie Simpson goal is the club's fastest, according to the complete record book ( though they mention an unconfirmed report of an own goal in 3 seconds in 1937 - this seems unlikely).

The Neville goal was the first in the league that year - it was timed at 35 seconds.

2 other quick ones:

- Deano in the 4-2 win at Oxford in 1997-8, before any Oxford player had touched the ball. That was 18 seconds.

- Tony Philliskirk vs Rotherham on Boxing Day 1983 - 23 seconds.

Sorry to spoil the story, but we won 2-1 actually. Pedro Verde got the other goal and I have a vague feeling Wally Downes scored for Wimbledon. It was 26th April 1980.

I saw us get four goals in the first eight minutes against Newcastle United on New Year's Day 1955. The game ended 6 - 2. (Ringstead, Hagan 2, Hawksworth, Spencer 2). 32,141 spectators watched the game.

Rumour has it the Newcastle side had been 'over-celebrating' on New Year's Eve.

Happy days!

Hmmm, I wonder if I'm thinking of another game then. I definitely saw us score straight from the kick off and then there being no more goals. Or perhaps I'm just getting old!

No, it was that one. Flood goal was very quick. It was the only league goal he ever scored for United.
