The target man thing reminds me of what was said about Baptiste - that he was one of the last genuine stoppers. Have to say, I thought he was quite capable on the ball compared to League One defenders in general, but I'll take it for granted that he was an old fashioned centre back.
Players that are a specialist in one regard are less common and less in demand than they used to be. Sharp, whose strength is poaching and box play, is still expected to do some hold up work and drop deep to receive the ball. Centre backs have to be strongest in the tackle/air but are expected to be somewhat capable with the ball and developing play from the back. It's not exactly total football, but players need to be somewhat well rounded.
So the idea of a pure target man, the best and most recent example I can think of at the Lane being Shipperley, or maybe Chief, is fading. Or for an extreme elsewhere, Akinfenwa, who was incredibly strong and nothing else. But what we need is a striker who's emphasis is on the physical strength and play making, because we don't have anyone filling that role. My hope was that in time Adams could learn the hold up game and be that player but I'm not sure if that will happen, or soon enough for us to rely on it.
Basically, no, I don't want some old fashioned idea of player who is only capable of heading and out muscling defenders. What I do want is a player that's much closer to Shipperley than Done.
