It's just a pity South Yorkshire doesn't really exist, in a geo-political sense. We're in the West Riding of Yorkshire, along with Leeds, of which Wakefield of all places is the Capital.

I always claim that we're in South Yorkshire, mind.

Brownie  Wakefield.

I've never been, so no comment!

In answer to the original question, being a Blade brings up a lot of conflicting images. I've always joked that I had as much choice over my Football Club as I did over my gender, so I've never "chosen" to be a Blade, as plenty have. Despite going to school in South Sheffield, I was always outnumbered by Bacon flavoured Friends, and at Uni I was the only Blade I knew, so I sort of identify with Walthy's outsider thing. Better than supporting a team like Manchester United or Liverpool where you're never more than five feet away from a fan at any rate.

Being a Blade is obviously a mixture of joy and despair. It's hugging people you don't know when Danny Webber scores at Ninian, and it's countless sombre coach rides back from Wembley or Old Trafford. It's Brown, Asaba, Allison, Deane and Davison putting Wednesday to the sword, and Brian Gayle gift-wrapping the Title and delivering it to Leeds. It's seeing us thrash Chelsea at your first game, seeing Tonge tear Liverpool apart and watching Jagielka in goal keeping Arsenal at bay, but it's also never, ever seeing us beat Manchester Fucking United.

But fuck supporting anybody else.

I have seen us beat Manchester Fucking United - 2-1 on 15/8/92 with Deane scoring the first ever PL goal after about 5 mins.

My first game was the last home game of that Season (I think, you'll be able to tell me!). We beat Chelsea 4-2. I think Whitehouse got a couple and Andy Scott scored on his debut. Townsend scored for them.

I also can remember age 15 going to Old Trafford on 23/04/1973 and spoiling the party for Bobby Charltons last game at Old Trafford with a 2-1 victory with I think the then Beckenbaur of the 1st division Keith Eddy scoring the winner. Must admit I was a little bit wary stood on the United road terracing by myself with the homr fans

Yes. 8/5/93. Scott, Rogers and Whitehouse 2 put us 4-0 up after about 50 mins (yes 4-0 up against Chelsea after 50 mins, you are not dreaming!). It looked like Chelsea would get pasted but we took our foot off the pedal and Chelsea got 2 back in the last 5 mins.

It was Scott's full debut but he had come on as sub at Hillsborough a couple of weeks earlier.

Absolutely right. Dearden got the other goal and it was Steve "Shirley Temple" Faulkner's debut (I think he was responsible for Man Utd's goal with a short back pass).

Just had a look back at the stats for that year and it appears we did the double on them with a 1 0 home win

Also remember the previous seasons home game a 1 -1 draw. I never remember BDTBL being so full (45,045)and I think my feet were off the floor for the full 90 mins with me being suspended in the air on the Kop by the sheer volume of people crammed together, Also remember this being the first time I heard the Georgie Best Superstar, carries a handbag and wears a bra song.

As for the away game that season every time theres a George Best tribute it gets rolled out.

Once when my son was little, he asked me what day it was. I joked with him and said ' its UNITEDSDAY'. 'Isn't it Wednesday?' he asked. Well you can have fun messin with little uns like that can't you. 'No it's UNITEDSDAY'. It was only a joke, but he has said Unitedsday ever since. At least to me anyway. Bless him.

South Yorkshire has Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley in it. Yorkshire has the North York moors, Dales, Yorkshire Coast, historical York, The Minster, Guy Fawkes (Boom !), Skipton, Peak District, Robin Hoods Bay, Whitby, the Yorkshire accent/dialect, Wentworth Woodhouse, Castle Howard, Yorkshire County Cricket Club. Plenty of Labour politics in former mining areas of West and South Yorkshire. Sheffield has Hallam always Tory or Lib and now represents a constituency that put the Tories in power

Football Sheffield United, Regional identity, definitely Yorkshire,
