given that he was here till 2011 anyway, and that little problem of not being able to win big games. Why do this?

oh, and since when does spending the most money, and having the biggest wage bill, and being 15 points off the top and also playing pretty dull football warrent a move like this

wasnt at charlton :D

I thought it was more them being shit rather than us looking good :p

I'm dissappointed about this tbh, I don't want 4 years of this kind of football. We're only about 3 or points better off than this time last year, so I don't see this being great for us.

He's at least saying the right things if nothing else:

Stability was a key word in Kevin Blackwell's address to the media after agreeing an extension to his contract at Bramall Lane.

The Blades chief tied himself to the club until 2012 after signing the deal in front of the media at United's Shirecliffe training base.

"The new deal came as a surprise to me, it was only mentioned last week," said Blackwell on Thursday. "The chairman has been talking about stability and said he likes what's happening both on and off the pitch.

"We want to send a message out to everyone that we are all in it together and we are a stable club."

Blackwell also used the press conference to re-iterate the club's long-term ambitions, added: "We have a long-term development plan but there is still pressure on me. This contract doesn't make me any safer - the fans will demand results - but it does give me an understanding from the board that I'm trying to achieve something.

"We have a blueprint and the club have asked me to look at all training aspects, both at home and abroad, and put in a structure that can be developed here, in Hungary, China, Australia or wherever it is required.

"I feel that if I have an idea I can discuss it with the board and follow it through - it is an exciting time for the club."

Blackwell also understands the club's short-term plan, the main concern of the fans, which is promotion back to the Premiership.

He adds: "The aim is to get in the Premier League, stay there, stabilise and from there, develop once more.

"For my confidence, this contract is terrific news, the club has decided that I'm the man to take it forward. I originally came with no contract, I put my credentials on the line and they are now backing me but until I get this club back into the Premier League I will consider myself a failure.

He's on dodgy ground there for the modern football supporter! Talking about long-term plans and strategy and an overall working structure for the whole organisation. Supporters want NOW!

I think he's talking about coaching, training, tactics etc. being cohesive from the youngest (the junior academy 10, 11 year olds) right through to the ist team at SUFC, Hungary, China and wherever. He wants to be careful, that is sounding dangerously like the Wenger method at Arsenal, and producing players like they do would be a terrible thing!!

With all due respect to Kevin Blackwell i have to say that i am baffled by this contract extension given the fact that his existing contract had a while to run.

The progress has been slow under Blackie, albeit following an impressive start, and i would say that he has been successful if not spectacular so far. We are in a decent position but the race is less then half-way run and a poor run of form could see us fall into the mid table malaise.

Surely the decision on a contract extension should have been made after the manager has completed his first full season in charge; i very much doubt there is much risk of a bigger club poaching him.

saw blackwell signing his new contract on sky sports news yesterday with the one and only terry robinson !! . I thought that the lancashire hot pot had been shipped out to Hungary:confused:

I agree with what he wants to achieve, he's really aiming at the right areas. But to me, he's just not the man to do it. I hope he proves me wrong, but I can't see it unfortunately.
