In 2023, I drove from Sheffield to Estoril in Lisbon to watch us play a friendly against Estoril Praia. Brilliant experience but the game was absolutely shit.

Half an hour from Gatwick to London Bridge. 14 quid return. Probably the easiest London away game by plane. London City Airport to West Ham is the only one that might be easier (or possibly Stansted to Spurs.)

Got more loyalty points than 99% blades who are 21+ year old (I’m 24) Furthest driven Bristol on a Tuesday night (twice). Went to Portugal for pre season 2 times and I am driving and digging it there in 3 weeks.for a coupe of nights 👌

Palace always seems to be longest away trip. M25 and then through the heavy traffic of Croydon. Crap area and ground too.

Saw us win there 3-1, can’t remember year. Early 1980’s.

Also early 1970s hitched there. 1972 I think

Took the bus from Prague to London to see us lose at Wembley in 93. I had to get to Prague from Liberec first. Flew from NYC for the Exeter away game in 2012 (cancelled promotion party) and again weeks later for the subsequent defeat to Huddersfield at Wembley. Numerous flights from Copenhagen during the Warnock years, mostly to London games. Hitch hiked to see us play a pre-season friendly at Hearts in the 80s. Torquay in the back of a removal van also in the 80's (probably our furthest league fixture). EDIT it's Plymouth
Sounds like a Kingscourt express trip. I flew from Prague having placed a bet that would cover costs; win the play off match against Ipswich and I've got the money, lose and I don't need it. Of course, we drew, and qualified for the final.

I've travelled far and wide (even been to Merseyside - erm maybe there's a song there 🤔)

Just looking at the replies, seems like quite a few of us old timers used to hitch-hike from time to time. I certainly did (never to any matches though). It got me thinking ...... back in the 70/80s hitch-hiking was quite common. You'd invariably see people at the side of the motorway link roads with their thumb out and a sign etc. I'd always return the favour and pick up a hitch-hiker when I was out and about on the motorways.

You don't tend to see so much of that though these days. Why is that, I wonder? Are we now more risk averse? Is it more dangerous these days? Are we less adventurous? I don't know the answer, but it seems that, like lots of things these days, people are reluctant to go out of their comfort zone and generally view lots more things as a danger than maybe we used to in our youth. Just like with kids..... me and my mates were going to the Lane on our own at 7/8/9. And playing out on the street was never ever seen as an issue - even from about 4 or 5.

One day I plan to do a PHD on this, but the main culprits were parents buying their kids cars when they went to uni in the 1990s. The first big drop off was around 1999/2000, then another around 2012. The final nail was COVID.

Was deployed to the Falklands when I was in the Army, my 1st thing back was to see a United game, although no return flight as that was my return trip it was an 18 hour flight via Ascension Island to Brize and the to Barracks in Colchester to watch United play Colchester away in 2008, looking back to the day!

Aren't there ride-sharing apps in the UK these days? There's one in Spain if you are fine riding in a small car with five passengers crammed in that takes various detours to drop people off.

Been to swillssboro many times, that ground and the fans definitely on a different planet.

Haven't got a clue pal, don't do all the internet stuff. That's my point though, these days everything seems so planned and sanitised. What happened to the carefree days when rather than getting a train or bus you'd just get yourself to M1 or A1 and stick your thumb out. You'd always get to your destination by hook or by crook.... and it was fun.

I was on holiday on the Algarve that year. Unknown to me, my wife had booked tickets for my 70th birthday to see this game...but not made any travel arrangements. Frantically I managed to get train tickets sorted to Lisbon and then on to Estoril. Also booked hotel for an overnight stay.
The trip was excellent but, as you say, the game was crap 0-0 draw. Remember Will Osula being best player.
