I remember going to the match, we traveled down by mail train, leaving sheffield at midnight, think it stopped at every station & got into London at 5am I also remember telling my mates on our return that they had played the best we had seen them all season, even though we had lost 4-0 so we must have been dire before that game.

We had been top until October and had been on a bit of a good run until losing 3-0 at Wolves in the Cup the previous week. Before that our results were:

15/1/66 H Burnley W2-1
22/1/66 H Fulham (FAC) W3-1
29/1/66 A Villa W2-0
5/2/66 H Sunderland D2-2

sob sob. Brings some memories back that team. West Ham were the pride of London in those days, post 1960-62 Spuds team of course. The 1964 Cup Final had Howard Kendall for Preston both Ends age 17 youngest ever player in the Cup Final and Sissons playing for Wet Spam.

Birchenall and Reece aside I think all the United team came from our area.
