I guess the concern with all this, is it sounds like
The worry is that Cannon and Ings are quite similar and neither will get the service they need or contribute in a way the same system demands. Play one upfront and that striker needs to be able to hold the ball up with a defender behind him, compete in the air and be mobile all the time. Stand still and it's a defender's field day.
Yeah, it feels a bit like Cannon again, in a striker who needs to play in a two. Although I remember in his later years Sharp managed to play the loam role well, with all his experience compensating.

I know Ings can play a similar role to Campbell as well, but hasn't exactly been successful when playing upfront for West Ham.

“Ings a striker more suited to a bygone age when every team wanted a ‘fox in the box’ type forward, but there’s a reason those type of players went out of vogue like twenty years ago, their overall contribution can be detrimental to the team, for if they’re not scoring then they’re not contributing much else, so can almost be like playing with ten men”

Thomas Cannon Esq. "Here, hold my beer..."

This was my exact thought. West Ham fan set the alarm bells....

“It’s fairly simple really, Ings performs best in a 2 up top where he can play off someone
The problem for him is that football has changed dramatically and that role doesn’t really exist for most clubs”

We certainly don't play a front two, we barely play a front one as Campbell just struggles up top on his own. Cannon is being pushed out onto the wing as is One...

Selles might as well play a front two with the players he has, Campbell and Ings with One and Cannon to replace them... can't be worst than what we've played so far.

Just give Barry a 100m track to run along on Shoreham street and throw a couple of balls at him every 20 mins or so, he'll be happy.

I think there's a big hole with Moore going. Cannon and Ings really need a bigger lad next to them to win balls in the air, scrap, do flick-ons and hold balls up. You could use One but he's very raw and hardly reliable. I worry we're continuing to bring in players unsuitable to the way we play!

Its funny isn't it. People moaned about Moore, they moaned about McBurnie, but they offer much more than goals. That said, the Selles way doesn't work for a striker.

Its not so much that the players are unsuitable but the system is unworkable, currently.

We need a striker, we need experience in the side. We currently appear to have zero leadership on field.

I'm happy. Let's see how it goes.

Hope this is the kick start he needs and if he can finish the season with 10/15 goals what a bonus, Cheers Roy as ever best bit on the forum

amusingly, if you were to play 2 up top in a Selles style, McBurnie would likely be a player that fits the bill quite well!

I've said elsewhere, our squad make-up doesn't really lend itself to any style. We could revert to 3 at the back, which would suit the defenders and midfielders but then we also have wingers who would be surplus to requirements. In our current system, I think you really need actual fullbacks and not wingbacks playing as fullwbacks, the 3 in midfield have to be able to play box to box and give the fullbacks protection, the 2 wide forwards have to be pressing a lot and be able to go both ways and then the striker needs to be able to be an outlet. Whether that's big and strong to compete in the air or making constant runs to find space.

This squad is a result of really bad planning (over 3 seasons) and shows why clubs need to have an identity which passes from manager to manager. Again, I have no idea why we don't have a DoF.

I don't think I can strike up enough courage to read the review?! Is it as bad as I fear?!

I'm actually quite optimistic though on Ings signing. It's got Billy, Dean Saunders, Didzy and Wayne Allison vibes this one! That would be some combined player attributes!

Me too, sadly its combined with the Blades injury record of Ebrell, Brewster, McBurnie, RND, Sander Berge, Kabba and Bogle...

My sentiments to 👍
