Wes Doing Us Proud

Alan Kelly was a truly world class GK, and my favourite Blades keeper ever.

Hendo was good, but for all his posturing and social media stuff, he always had one eye away from the lane.

I liked Blackman, thought he was a good keeper for us.

Paddy was quality, played for us at a time where I thought we were playing some great football, and were so, so unlucky to not make a cup final or go up.

Wes is currently playing probably as well as he ever has. He's commanding, a good shot-stopper, not scared to get among the feet, and decent in the air. I'd probably put him 3rd in my personal rankings, behind Kelly and Paddy.

West must have the worlds softest hands.

Even when rocket shots are fired at him, no matter how hard they are.. he seems to always be able to parry them down for the ball to drop dead right at his feet.

Very noticeable the amount of times he chooses to do this rather than catch a shot outright... and is actually very effective.

In order I’d have to go for:

Kelly
Tracey
Kenny (before his injury - never quite the same afterwards)
Henderson
Foderingham

Honourable mention goes to Mel Rees, who played every bit as well as the above when I saw him, but - sadly - I didn’t see him often enough to really make a fair comparison.

I can’t rate Ramsdale quite as highly based on his time with United because he had a fairly extended poor spell when he first came back to us.

Having Foderingham only 5th is by no means a criticism. He’s been superb, but I’ve been fortunate enough to see some truly outstanding ‘keepers during my time following United. If he can keep up this level of performance for the rest of this season, then replicate it in the Premier League (if he gets the chance) then he’ll be moving up the list.
Rees didn’t really play enough to be considered one of the greats, who knows what would have happened if he hadn’t got cancer, but for individual performances, he was absolutely incredible. Easily on par with peak Tracey and Kelly, perhaps better.
I like Wes though, with him and our usual back three, I’m always a bit surprised when they concede, it just seems so unusual, like seeing a Yorkshireman drop ten bob down a drain and not either try to fish it out or stand swearing at the drain for ten minutes.

Well done Wes. Think he deserves more credit for the crucial save late on. Straight at him? Yes. But the ball was travelling and Wes could have easily parried it out for a Norwich tap in.

His handling is often impeccable and I think we take it for granted at times. Love the guy.

He had a bit of a wobble in form earlier in the season where he didn't seem quite as sharp as previous.

However much better today, hopefully coming back into form just at the right time 👍

Seen a bit of talk recently about possibly replacing Wes if we go up (Henderson being mentioned for example). Think when it comes to keepers I'd much rather have one in form/confidence than an expensive gamble.

You actually done him a disservice here. It was moving wickedly and dipped too. He almost dived past it as it moved to the left a fair bit at the end. To hold onto it was great goalkeeping

The biggest issue that Wes has is that his career has been tarnished by being branded as League One Wes by Di Canio. Therefore he is well known as having a reputation as a dodgy keeper based on that, rather than anything else. When he was signed by Wilder I was completely underwhelmed and couldn’t see him as anything other than an a cheap understudy.

The reality is that he is an experienced and extremely competent goalkeeper. He is a solid shot stopper, calm, well organised and does what he needs to do with the minimum of fuss. After most matches when it comes to discussing the players his name is rarely mentioned in either a positive or negative way which is a sign that he just gets on with it, and hints at reliability.

If we go up he has earned the right to have a crack at the Premier League. He’ll be suited to it, and do it justice as well

George Long has 39 clean sheets for Utd?!
He made 100 league appearances for us and despite some of our more moronic fans using him as a lightning rod for unhappiness for the team as a whole he remains a decent goalkeeper. He's got 12 clean sheets in 30 league appearances for 5th placed Millwall this season and has turned out to be a competent Championship goalkeeper as some wise poster predicted in 2016.

One. I don't think he made any errors against Crewe?

Long is a good goalkeeper but he's completely devoid of confidence. That's behind these mistakes - nothing more, nothing less. He remains an excellent shot stopper but that's only half the goalkeeper's job.

It's got to the point where it feels like he'd be better off moving away. A new start at another club would probably do him the world of good: he'll be a decent Championship keeper at least in 4-5 years' time. You can quote me on that.

I think we need another goalkeeper but Wes gets first chance. We just need competition for places is all.
