Wes Doing Us Proud

I have to say that we see way fewer chipped goals so forcing him to go for it would be a good move. Didn't work out so have to say great strike.

Definitely at fault for the goal. No need to come out that far so quickly. Too eager, which has happened before in his early games for us.

But...

Overall he's been our best own keeper since Kenny.

He stays on his line and let's the covering defender come across to deal with it and it would have took some strike from Gooch to score that goal. No need to come out like he did and he was definitely partly responsible for that goal. Still a good take though from the Sunderland lad. All in all though, it was mistake from Wes but he had a good game otherwise and it was just a misjudgement on his part. I'll never really have a pop at keepers being prepared to come out and command their area as I've seen too many Utd keepers in the past be routed to their line and who wouldn't take charge of their 6 yard box. Very good keeper is Wes. So no harm done with their goal as we won anyway, but I bet the management and Wes himself will be thinking that he could have done better in that situation. Good learnings.

Ramsdale benefited from moving clubs at the right time and playing games Henderson was a better more agile keeper though not as strong as Ramsdale. Hendo's mistake was thinking Man Utd would play him rather than a guy on hundreds of thousands per week. That said who cares nowt wrong with our Wes who has improved with games played.

Wes has been outstanding.

This time last season I genuinely didn't see him nailing down the number 1 snd performing like he has.

Delighted to be proved wrong. Tbf also a nod to Wilder or Mitch or whoever was instrumental in bringing him in. Thought it was a bit of an odd one at the time.

Tbf to Wes, it was a mistake to rush out that quickly but I'm always happy to see a player make a mistake that doesn't cost points. He will learn from that without the issue of feeling like he let the team down, only really himself.

For all the comparisons to Ramsdale, I actually think that Wes is equally as good as, if not better than Henderson.

He certainly commands the air as well and is just as good as a shot stopper.

He just let needs to add a bit of shithousing to his game 🙂

I don’t get why people are saying it was a mistake to rush out that quickly? Surely you want to make the goal as small as possible?

It was an incredible finish and that’s it.

Wes has exceeded all expectations and is rightly a fan favourite.
He did make a fatal mistake on their goal. Standing his ground instead of rushing out would have stacked the odds in his favour as the striker would have had one if not two defenders on him a further 10 yards forward. wes made his option simple. Lob. That said I think he is more than good enough for where we are. Just need to keep Sander right of centre, and introduce Doyle to replace Fleck and Khadra to play behing Illian/Rhian.
So Wes stays on his line, Gooch gets the ball down, under control and then sticks it in far corner as the defenders just can't get across in time, and the whole ground is moaning "why didn't Wes come for that"

Poor lad can't win.

I think Wes has been real class. He reminds me of David Seaman, in that he oftens waits quite late to move and then backs his ability to make a save, probably why he has been good on Penalties. He is not as aggressive and therefore as effective as Hendo in 1-1's, so it was a bit unusual that he came so early for the ball on Weds, perhaps that is not his strength.

So many threw their toys out of the pram when we signed him as backup after getting Ramsdale.
Fact was that Moore was out injured and I suspect Wilder never rated Verrips (Also signed without much knowledge) and it would seem he was right not to rate him.
Fodders has been excellent these past 2 seasons.

Ramsdale started off slowly and made some mistakes but in the 2nd half of the season showed why he was the fee we bought him for.

Although we recouped the money for Ramsdale, I would say that spending that much on a keeper was not necessary.
I'd have preferred us to bring in a top end Championship keeper at the time for say 5m and use the rest of the fee and wages on signing another midfielder or even better competition for JOC. Thing was until we played Wolves and JOC was deffo not right after we didn't know we would be without JOC, well what is currently forerever.

Disagree on the goalkeeper. It is a specialist position that you can't just make do with. The spine of the team will win and lose you any game. Get the spine right and you have the basis for the flair. Without it, you can have as many attacking midfielders and wide men as you like, you will get nowhere.

Good example of taking an observation regarding a decision made by a player and making it into a BIG issue.

Egan's at fault for the pass entirely, Wes' decision meant a spectacular finish was required and it got one, but many other occasions it doesn't get one and ends in the upper tier. In those situations you just play the percentages, I'd imagine the chance xG wasn't overly high as a result

Wes is becoming my favourite United keeper of all time. He's so calm and composed and you have absolute confidence in him as a fan whenever you see him start. His shot stopping is good. His catches are good. He pushes the ball out of danger. His distribution is good. You can tell that the defence have absolute faith and confidence in him and he commands his area well and any clangers are so few and far between.

Swansea's keeper today was a flapping fish and he resembled Adam Davies in the first leg against Wrexham, no offence to Davies.

For me he’s Third behind Paddy Kenny and Simon Tracey.

Underrated is league 1 Wes by a few

For the last three decades at least we've been spoilt with excellent keepers on the whole, with the notable exception of the L1 years- Stuck in the mire with Simmo, Long, Howard, Bunn? Urgh. Then we brought in a half decent keeper in Moore and went up!

Wes at a similar level to Paddy for me too, both class but a notch behind Kelly/Tracy. ⚔

Wes looking back to his calm and authoritative best after a shaky spell a month ago by his own high standards.

He’s showed why he’s our undisputed no.1, but good for Davies to get 2 games in vs Wrexham and make that crucial penalty save.

Can't remember him doing any "proper" saves yesterday, can remember 2 dangerous Swansea shots but they were both basically at him.
This season he doesn't tend to have much to do and I'd say Wes's strength is his calm influence and the understanding he has with the defence.

The total opposite to Martin Olsen, who might be a good goalie as an individual but the defence always seemed uncertain (almost panicky) with Olsen in goal.
Regards goalies on an individual level we've had far better than Wes but when he's in the team the defence do seem better, reassured and more organised.
Unless an obvious clear upgrade comes along I think he deserves a chance to play in the PL next season.

In order I’d have to go for:

Kelly
Tracey
Kenny (before his injury - never quite the same afterwards)
Henderson
Foderingham

Honourable mention goes to Mel Rees, who played every bit as well as the above when I saw him, but - sadly - I didn’t see him often enough to really make a fair comparison.

I can’t rate Ramsdale quite as highly based on his time with United because he had a fairly extended poor spell when he first came back to us.

Having Foderingham only 5th is by no means a criticism. He’s been superb, but I’ve been fortunate enough to see some truly outstanding ‘keepers during my time following United. If he can keep up this level of performance for the rest of this season, then replicate it in the Premier League (if he gets the chance) then he’ll be moving up the list.

Kelly has been my fave Blades keeper, mainly cos of the shootout v Cov in the FA Cup. Love a keeper who's good at keeping pens out. I suppose Wes had his 2 last season, shame he couldn't repeat it in the Forest shootout.

He’s a 7/10 which is perfect for us. But that defence shouldn’t be making it so we rely on Wes. There’s some serious experience there. I think we miss RND in some way. Can’t wait for him to come back.
