We're miles apart.

Surprised with the line up today. Two target men up front and a 4-2-4ish formation seemed naive against a Premiership side.
I suspect it was an attempt to be defensive Bergs. With such mobility in the front pair it couldn't have been anything else. Cant have expected Blackman and Murphy to deliver cross after cross to those two, surely?

On our way out of the car park. Thought we actually had periods of being the better side, certainly first half.

They finished well and we switched off. We weren't as poor as I thought we'd be.

I reckon the tactics were to go long and hope that Kitson and Porter would win headers with Murphy and Blackman trying to get on the end of dropping balls.

Should have signed simmo back, he was class at dropping balls !

We played a much more passing game than a United team set up to go long.

God we're miles apart!
Of course we're miles apart two divisions, did anybody think we would do anything down there?

If you went down for a piss up hope you had a good un, if you went down for a result nowt doin lads.
Don't personally give a toss about the cup it lost it's magic years ago for me.
Blackmans still here two more coming in next week on to the next games.
Come on lads we're still in with a shout at least not in a relegation battle are we.

Yeah, and it worked a treat didn't it. Not a chance of seeing an improvement while Danny's at the helm, time for a change and the longer we leave it the worse things will get.

Where did I say it worked?

Sorry. I forgot to put the sarcastic wink at the end. I was taking the piss ;)

Foxy, I couldn't make it there today but have just had a chat with a mate who's on his way home from the match and his version of events mirrors your post above.
First 25 minutes, it seems our boys were like rabbits in headlights but we gradually got into it and were the better team until their second goal. Two early goals after the break and it's goodnight.

The next week could be pivotal to our season I think. Will Blackman move or will we keep him? McCabe has hinted that some players will be signed, will they materialise? We have a very important game on Friday night, the atmosphere at the Lane is shocking and from the comments being made about DW, he's now under the most pressure since he took the job, to produce a win and ideally, a decent performance. I hope i'm wrong but I fear it could turn poisonous on Friday night if we get turned over. :(

Right, lets get rid of Danny, who do we get to replace him ?

Not going to get into a rant over this result as it's not surprising but it just goes to show how bad we have become. We're so far away from where we ought to be its frightening. Reading are a Championship standard side having a season in the top flight and a club with aspirations of playing in the Championship should be able to give them a game. We're a mid table third tier side at the moment and without serious investment that's where we shall remain. Club needs to pull their finger out.

I suggest that is a very accurate assessment BB. I fear that just such events will occur on Friday night.

I don't understand this at all. "Reading are a Championship standard side having a season in the top flight" What a load of nonsense that is!! And our current team is LEAGUE ONE side! Somehow you're making it out like we should be in the same league as Reading! I can't understand how you're trying to justify that you expected us to give a premier league side a fair game.

Look, we played a side 2 leagues above us, they beat us comfortably (as they should) that as far as i can see is not a concern. Losing to Hartlepool, Yeovil etc I understand complaining, but losing at Reading is to be expected. This game was irrelevant and I for one am glad we're out of the cup anyway! Just an unwanted distraction.

Did it see us create chances?
From post-match reports on our site, your Blades had 3 good to very good chances between 10 and 40 minutes, and should have had at least 1 goal, but we got lucky. Porter came close twice and Murphy forced a very good save to keep the Blades off the score sheet. Legs goal at 40 minutes was against the run of play and was deflected into the upper corner of the net. McDermott ripped into the team at the half and the Royals came out for the second half with some extra fire. With that and the late goal in the first half, a couple of good plays by McCleary got a pair of quick goals and it was over. Several of our fans said the Blades had the flow of the match most of the first half and the score was very flattering to us at that point.

You know your side far, far better than I could, but I see the Blades in about the same position that the Royals were in last year at this point - in the Playoff range but not sure we'd stay there. We did add Jason Roberts, who helped with team spirit more than anything else, then went on a run to the top of the table. That's certainly possible, so look for the positives and back your club - there could be pleasant surprises ahead. And yes, I am an optimist, but it worked out well for Reading last season and could work for you Blades as well! Good luck the rest of the season!

I remember going to see Warnock's team in the premiership (in a comparable situation to Reading now), getting humiliatingly battered by league one Swansea in the cup at home.

Legertwood played for Reading today and I wouldn't have him in our team.

It doesn't have to be cut and dried.

Reading will more than likely go down this season and we supposedly have aspirations of playing in the Championship. In getting there we would be up against the likes of Reading next season. With that in mind you don't see it as realistic that we should give them a decent game? I never said we should expect to win there (I would have accepted defeat by a couple of goals with a decent performance) but having been thoroughly outclassed by them it only serves to highlight how far away we are from being ready for the next level.

Luton beat Norwich today (a better side than Reading).

No, I don't see it as realistic because you're jumping the gun. IF, massive IF, we get promoted, we will make at least several signings to improve our starting 11. The team that went out there today is a league one side, and the team we were against today was a premier league side! I agree that they may go down, but you seem to be getting ahead of yourself a bit. If they go down, they will lose players, if we go up, we will gain players. At that point, we should be more evenly matched!

They're doing a good job pretending to be a premiership team as they're 2 places above relegation. Not bad for a "championship" side

Really?! I can't remember the last time we made several new signings that improved our squad. I think you'll be spared that disappointment come May. It's a shame the cost of it will be staying in this league.

They will go down, just my prediction. We did a good impression of the same thing when we were in there.....remember?

My prediction is Blackman will be gone by Thursday and we will not have made further signings due to some spurious excuse. Danny Wilson has my sympathies, he is working with his hands tied behind his back.

Yet when Warnock blew our budget in January 2007 on a shower of shite, he was roundly and rightly criticised. IF we sign anybody, would you trust DW to spend wisely, given the utter crap he's brought in?

I'm afraid we're so used to mediocrity that DW is practically immune from criticism. If he's still in charge in May, he will take Micky Adams' crown of worst United manager ever.
