Rotherhams brought in a shed load of new players like us tried some formations out today and got lashed 5-1 at queen of the south , I suspect burton are a better side than them. Rotherham fans will point out the same arguments
We want to be winning games from august 9th onwards , as those prior to then we dont get points for

It does make me wonder why bother with such experimental sides. We played 2 formations that stand no chance of ever starting with lots of youngsters, against a team who were up for it and clearly already out of the starting blocks.

Other than demolishing the confidence of a few youngsters, confirming we can't hit a bulls ass with a banjo up front, and robbing me of an afternoon and £30, today achieved absolutely nothing.

Its about getting match fit, but results are also nice

Development squad did, 1st team yesterday(?) drew with Falkirk

May have been a kick up the arse for all those players who thought it may be a stroll in the park - Promotion has to be earned not a given for the bookies favourite
Lets face it Doyle and Porter were sh!te last season so I cannot imagine much improvement this time round the others so so not much there then ! Hopefully Mr Clough can get them working to be an attacking force in the division but unfortunately despite efforts and platitudes we still lack a striker thatwill take us out of this division - on this result the defence is looking decidedly dodgy !

Some guys stood not far from us were going ape shit about it all, seemed way over the top for the first pre season game. Credit to Burton where it is due, they were very good. We were very poor, especially first half. Much brighter in the second. I would say today showed how much we really need another striker.

Were they in the middle of the goal about halfway up the stand by any chance? Had some guy proper kicking off just infront of me after the second went in, giving it all the "Clough aaght", "f*cking useless United", "bunch of wankers", etc. until someone behind gave him a proper bollocking and completely embarrased him. He went away at halftime and I didn't see him again.

Very poor first half then a good second, which should come as no surprise if people look at the teams we put out. Could not care less about the result, the 'proper' team we put out in the second half showed more than enough to suggest that we'll be absolutely fine when the squad is fully fit and the matches actually matter.

As for players Baxter seems to have shed a bit of timber and worked really hard, JCR was very busy and put a few good crosses in, and McGahey was good, really comfortable on the ball and quite strong. Thought Alcock, Crawford, Harris and Basham looked decent as well.

Best part about today for me though (other than the "banter" with the female steward :D) was getting to properly see Diego for the first time. Ran his bollocks off and REALLY impressed me with his touch and control, I think he'll be an important player for us this year. Shame his effort near the end didn't go in.

.

Yeah that's the one, I was a few rows from the front behind the goal. Seems odd that people expect to see results at pre season matches, I go just to see the new signings and enjoy the sight of red and white stripes on a field again.

Like your assessment of today too, think you've got it spot on

2nd half of the season Doyle was easily one of the better players and we needed him in the team more than people care to think.

Chris Porter - if it wasn't for him, you wouldn't have seen the magical arch in North London mate. Or the dizzy heights of 7th place in the league

Losing is ok, but 4-0. I am sure Nige will have read the riot act and told them it was not acceptable.

I think more of a concern is that we didn't score. It's a shame that McNuts didn't play as from the little bits I have read about the game yesterday it looks like we were missing somebody with a bit of nouse.

Anyway, stop fucking about Nige. Best 11 out for the 1st half against Northampton.

If anyone is honestly humiliated by the result yesterday, I'd suggest they need to have a serious word with themselves.
True, but if you weren't slightly embarrassed you'd be a bit strange. One thing's for sure, we learned fuck all and a few players confidence took a step backwards.

You think so? The riot act in first pre season when the whole point is a fitness gaining exercise. Methinks not.
I well remember a pre season game at Matlock a few years ago, a kid we'd released bobbed a hat trick against Kenny, Geary, Morgan, Jags, Naysmith. We went up that season I think.

Correct, WE learned FA but Clufty and his management team will have learnt quite a lot.

Really, like what? That we need a new striker? :)

Can't see what anyone could have learned. But I've never been a fan a of drastically experimental sides.

Losing any game 4-0 should not be acceptable, maybe our standards are just getting lower. Me thinks that Nigel probably has better standards. I am sure he really wanted to go back to burton and get his ass turned over.

Anyway, whatever your thoughts on yesterday, by all accounts they were worse than rubbish. I am not upset at the results because it's pre-season and he put 2 mishmashed sides out. I think things will be different from Tuesday onwards. People are getting a bit over dramatic defending and attacking the team after yesterday.

Fair points all and no one likes losing 4-0 even at tiddleywinks. However, hopefully it will pale into the insignificance it deserves once the wheels start to turn fully.
And BTW, for any anoraks out there, think I got the back four wrong for the Matlock game.... Naysmith wouldn't have been at club then and not sure if Geary was too. However Morgs and Jags looked like two beginners that day!

Well, yes, for one :) . But with a squad of nine new players plus a few from the academy then what would be the point in playing last years finishing side (or as close as possible to it)? The only answer would be to keep the fans happy; we know that through the next four or five training matches, because that is what they are, the starting eleven will evolve from what is learnt by players and managers alike.

The new players will have learnt that Blades fans expect nothing short of 100%, even in a training match, they will have learnt the expectation required of them. The manager has the chance to assess these players in that environment, different to the day to day training drills, and by a process of elimination the finished product is achieved.

Let's be straight, it's not a warm up for the fans, it's development of the squad.

If I wasn't sat in an airport arrivals, I'd dig you a few photos of the game/back four out :)

Well I'm clearly a bit strange as I'm not embarrassed at all. I don't pay a great deal of attention to pre season results particularly this early on.
Anyone who watched enough football over the years and isn't a huge drama queen would have a similar outlook I would think.

So a combination of our first team loses 6-0, 8-0, 10-0 to 4th division opposition.......no change? Not a hint? The lady protests too much, I suspect :)

I'm no doubt influenced by the fact I gave up a Saturday afternoon and a handful of tenners to bother, unlike some of the players. Either that, or I'm a drama queen.

I think the fact you went, paid and watched a shite performance taints your perspective. I've done it loads as I'm leaving the ground.
By the time I'm back home though I'd like to think I've had time to reflect and give a fair view of what has just happened. I do like the lady protest line though as there's a nice link to a subject we previously used to be on opposite ends of. ;) I like that debates shows I'm not one for knee jerk reactions or short term opinions.
Not saying that's the right way to be, I wouldn't have sacked Weir unless someone like Clough was already available so it works both ways.
