Why?

We win tonight
Gillingham draw with Rochdale tonight

Gillingham beat Shrewsbury on Saturday
We beat Barnsley on Saturday

Gillingham lose/Draw to Burton
We beat Coventry

Gillingham lose/draw to Millwall
We beat Scunthorpe

We finish 6th. You heard it here first folks.

*bold underlined italics indicates bad result fucks this whole theory up :D

Obviously maths weren't your strong point. If Gillingham do as you say they could under your scenario end up with 74 points, the maximum we can get. Perhaps in your enthusiasm you forgot that they have a 9 goal advantage over the Blades. I am assuming that we will therefore overhaul that by winning by an excess of 11 goals over them in the next three games?

If Gillingham beat Shrewsbury they must at least have a positive goal difference of 19 with two to play. If they draw their last two that means they must still have a positive goal difference of 19. Meanwhile ours is 9. I presume you are suggesting results of Blades 4 Barnsley 1 (+12), Coventry 1 Blades 3 (+14) Blades 5 Scunthorpe 0 (+19).

No, not in your wildest fantasies! If we win the next three it will be a miracle, though not impossible.

I don't blame Adkins for the players suddenly deciding to start putting themselves about with 8 games to go. It shows what they should have been doing most of the season and says a lot about them in my opinion.
Both Baptiste and Flynn have only recently got into this starting eleven. Plus Collins no longer in the equation is a big plus. UTB!

Yeah only four points behind, but I still don't like our run in.
  • Barnsley at home will be very very tough
  • Covenrty won't be easy even if they have dropped down the league table recently
  • Scunthorpe our old boggey team...
I hope we haven't left it to late but we do have a chance.

Still in with a chance, but only 3 games left now.

The games remaining for all teams still with a mathematical chance. Yellow highlighted games are where teams in the table play each other, meaning points will be dropped by someone.

In some ways this demonstrates the way the play offs keep a season alive. Coventry fans will be looking at their goal difference and giving themselves a chance. "if we can beat donny and the blades we can take it to the final game."

As for us, we just need to win em all and hope the other results drop our way for once.

This seems like a perfect time for the club to announce players' contracts are being renewed if you ask me. You just know people are going to fall into the trap and actually accept it because we've had a good run of 3/4 games. Don't do it, people!

I think that assuming we have to win all three remaining games, dingles & Gills need to win 2 from 3 to squeeze past us. Not an easy task with all the associated pressure.

If we do over the dingles on Saturday then they would have to win their last 2. Rochdale realistically also have to win their last three games.

Squeaky bum time for all concerned.

Gillingham have got to win on Saturday. If they don't, and we do, the whole thing opens up nicely

This team go on to win 5 games in a row?
It's possible I suppose...I'll email Adkins this..seems right up his street..

While I would like us to do it , and finally get out of this shit league .
I'm scratching my head , after watching this same team roll over and die V Southend away ,
Suddenly with no pressure on them , they probably thought. they'd blown it as well.
They suddenly realise they could be out of a job in a few weeks time ( just like me by the way ) they up there game
so after meandering along for 40 games , and with a handful left , they decided to go out and win a few ,
Don't get me wrong , IF it happens and we get through I will be over shouting on the Blades ,
but a lot of these players need to have a long look at themselves .

Oh, it doesn't strike me as likely.

But it would be a very United thing if we have a faint chance on the last day - say we need 2 other results to go our way.

My best guess:

Saturday - we win
Coventry - we draw, but can still do it if things go in our favour on the last day
Scunthorpe - everything goes against us in other games and our season peters out.

To the best of my recollection, the last time a result in another game helped us on the last day was 1998, when Brum failed to beat Charlton and we made the playoffs. Ever since when we've gone into the last day needing something to happen in another game (2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2012) those results have gone against us.

Gosh, there are some giddy people about.............

Next game Barnsley and the only game we can influence.

Win that and then see how many we look to take to Coventry - won't be quite like Palace a few years back but it could be a good day out - think we actually deserve a good day out after this season.

One game at a time and put points on the board - anyway, we owe the dingles for gifting them that goal at Oakwell when the game should have been out of sight.

I've got better one...win the last three games, get to play off finals..penalties...Billy misses vital last pen :(

Didn't realise Coventry are still only 6 points off 6th place. They've thrown it away even more than us.

We lost at Southend but no way did we roll over and die.

We were the better team for most of the game and if Billy had put his one on one away we would have gone on to win that game comfortably.

They had the right breaks at the right time.

We hit the post right at the end. That goes in it's 2-2, instead they hoof it 60yds down field, we're a bit exposed at the back as we're chasing an equaliser, and bang it's 3-1.

We definitely lost but we definitely did not roll over and die.

It bugs when people see things so negatively that they are quick to grab any chance to moan,

Using recent form as another guide, we are still outsiders:

Last 5 games points Last 10 games points

Millwall 10 / 18
Bradford 10 / 20
Gills 3 / 11
Barnsley 10 / 20
Rochdale 8 / 20
Us 10 / 17
Scunny 12 / 19

Adams is a big factor too. He simply must keep his head screwed on and become the player he can. He’s shown signs of that recently and it’s no coincidence that we’ve improved as that partnership has blossomed. But it was only around 4 weeks ago he was criticized for not working hard in training. Must keep it up now.

In all probability we probably have left it too late. It’s frustrating when you look back at Shrewsbury (H) Colchester (H) Southend (H) Bury (H) Crewe (A) Oldham (A) etc. where we’ve thrown points away over the season. It would have been so easy for us to have an extra 6 or 7 points on the board at this stage without being brilliant but just by doing the basics better on more occasions.

Burton, Wallsall, Gillingham aren’t any better than us in terms of quality. They have simply played as a team more efficiently and more consistently. They’ve known their best team and had a closer knit group over the course of the season.

It’s incredibly frustrating but at least the recent upturn provides us with more hope for next season. That said, I think the league will be stronger. Charlton and MK will be tough and I can see Northampton and Oxford holding their own.

I think there’s only McEveley and Flynn that we’ll renew that people won’t be thrilled about. Maybe McGahey Howard at a push if he’s happy being a No2. I think we can all agree Long should be retained. And I can’t see us turning round and offering new deals to

As they’re not in the team at the moment.

Indeed. Given the response from Adams, it's almost as though Adkins knew what he was doing in dropping him and making the point publicly...

But any course of action in man management has it's risks. It seems to have worked of late. Let's hope it continues to work.

With all due respect Maidenhead, you will find on 99% of my posts are positive , and reflect my passion and desire for our club to do well .
If the ball hadn't been passed across our back 3 they wouldn't have scored the second goal .
If, when any 1 of there corners came into our box , it was defended as it should be i.e kick the fucking ball out instead of passing it to 1 of the opposition , at the edge of our box it wouldn't have put us under so much pressure.
When ever I've seen us play this year , it takes an age to take a goal kick , throw in , free kick , corner , giving the oppo , time to re group .
Roll over and die may have been a tad OTT .
As I stated in previous posts , I fully expected from day 1 of this season for it to be us and Wigan to go up .
I seldom if rarely lash into any player that pulls on the red and white , I stood up for porter on many occasions ,
Doyle as well .
I've been critical of Sammon , but only because I've seen him play league of Ireland , and for Ireland , and therefore realise he's not good enough for our team .
The only 2 players that are never above criticism are the cunt curran , and givens .
As always UTB .

The Coventry game worries me as does Saturday but to be honest the fact we're still in it till the end is a lot better than what it looked like after the result v Burton. Much credit needs to go to Adkins under immense pressure since Christmas too.
I seem to recall Coventry buggering it for us in the mid 90's - can someone remind me? If I am right.

if we catch Barnsley on points we'll probably catch them on goals as well. Still have to worry about Rochdale and Scunny as well. Gills are still the team likely to do us on points or goal difference

There was a time when we would have laughed at that comment, but now, unfortunately, it's true..........

I think Neil might have got them "motivated" a bit before 8 games from the end.

Adkins is as culpable as the players I am afraid. After all he is the manager isn't he? About time he put the boot in imo.

Indeed - all about small margins. A few would have put their house on Billy lobbing the keeper and scoring.

Beat the dingles, let the rest do what they want - and there are so many permutations it isn't worth think about.

All we can do is WIN 3 games of football and see where that takes us.

My opinion, is IF we do get 9 points we will make it - and not necessarily in 6th either - now there's optimism for you :)
