My view is that United should back Wilder with a 10 year contract ( ridiculed on here and no support about 9 months ago).

Look at the situation Blades. Without loads of cash he's the best in 'the world' within our wilderest dreams! He has performed a minor miracle these past 18 months.

With cash? I'd go with him 100%. Why? Because he's got common sense, he knows life. He knows the game. Even with cash he'll buy characters, you know the Jagielkas not the Lescotts or the Woodgates.

Wilder has the experience of over 800 games. He has a very good manager as his Assistant. He's a Blade through and through but he is not for one minute blinded by Bladeyness. He is also ambitious and is not a fool,

His ability as a manager will not be defined by a mediocre spell as a 'safe pair of hands' in S2, keeping the natives happy with mid-table Championship football. I reckon he has a sense of destiny and confidence having served his apprenticeship at other clubs.

United have to show him they believe in him. The ownership tangle demonstrates how quickly football stability can change. The eventual owners, whoever they are, have to back the man and so do our fans.

We have seen so much nonsense on here this past few weeks, nonsense that the manager will be clocking and nonsense that affects him and the players. Things said by majorities on fans' forums do not go unnoticed. Support in bad times can mean so much to a manager and a player when other opportunities beckon.

Fans need to understand what they wish for and believe me Wilder is as good as it gets for us, no doubt whatsoever. He is our only chance and if he fails in due course so be it, let's go with him.

The alternatives are the likes of Robson, Blackwell, Speed, Adams, Wear, Clough, Adkins et al.

Or if we somehow get serious financial backing we'll get somebody like Carvalhio or the new bloke over there, can't remember his name or that of their new Chief Exec from Charlton. Be careful what you wish for Blades.

Big cash does not buy success. Big transfer fees do not guarantee you any better than Sharp/Clarke/ Donaldson. I'd love to see who Wilder signs if he ever gets say £5m on a player. I think a lot on here would be very surprised who he went for.

Let's support the manager. Let's be patient and grow with him and the club. For a club like ours it's the only way to get right up there. Wilder could just possibly be a Brian Clough, a Bill Shankly and even an Arsene Wenger who " turned down the world'" to stay with the Arsenal fans. OK he has lost his way but we may just have something like his first 10 years to look forward to right now. Be careful what you post and what you wish for fellow Blades. Wilder is THE MAN for at least a decade.

I agree but even the messiah needs a carrot dangling in front of him, keep him on his toes. Fine balancing job to keep him happy and also motivated

Performance incentives can be extremely ambitious and very lucrative; easily afforded if achieved.

I’m not sure that 10 year contracts ever make sense, but I’d back giving Wilder an enormously long / big one.

Newcastle gave Pardew an 8 year deal.

But that was [allegedly] so he could pay off some gambling debts to Mike Ashley.

Regards to the OP - you have to guard against complacency. I know of someone have me a wage increase on a 10 year deal I’d put in half the effort knowing it made no difference.

But I ain’t him and he ain’t me.

Absolutely
Categorically
Not

If he continues to do a grand job, he and Knill will get appropriate extensions in the 2 to 3 year range. Nothing more.

If he does very well, and the big clubs come a knocking, a very long term contract will do little more than up the compensation a bit if he has already made his mind up to go.

Sorry WWF, no one in football has ever earned a 10 year contract and that’s with good reason. Things change !

UTB

Wilder reminds me of Mourinho. He's a good manager, he knows he's a good manager, he's mardy, he'll achieve great things in the game (possibly with us) and ultimately he'll do what's best for Chris Wilder.

True regards pardew. His latest gamble hasn’t paid off either

Listening to the BBC Fighting talk podcast earlier and they mentioned that when Man U won the European cup, fergie told the players that they were in the next day for training.

He told them to bring their medals and he’d lock them in the drawer.

Basically keep pushing and giving people incentives to go further. Yes keep them happy and rewarded but there must be incentives so people don’t get too comfortable

Ever imagine Wilder being complacent? Any Blade on here getting complacent? He's a Blade and will go for it forever.

Pardew/ Wilder. Chalk/cheese.

Agree in Post 4.

Couldn't disagree more but respect that opinion and only time will ever tell.

I worked for a company I believed in. It was worth thousands to me in salary and the day we were taken over changed my life. Wilder can be Mr. SUFC.

Might be chalk and cheese but Pardew has achieved far more as a manager than Wilder. So far.

Allardyce got a 10 year contract many years ago at Bolton who wish he had stayed for ever no doubt.

Double No.

Besides, a contract of that term is inflexible to both parties.

Us if we tried to sack him.
CW if a club wanted to poach him and pay up his contract.

Not in S2 he hasn't. Nor overall IMO but debatable I suppose. Who has the momentum though Pedro?

Want him here? If not , what are you saying?

No he isn’t deserving of a 10 year contract.

If we carry on this upwards trajectory we are on (unlikely but you never know) at this rapid pace then the more likely situation is that we outgrow Wilder.

Wilder wants to get us in to the premier league, if he achieves that and steadies us, then what? No one knows if he would be a success in the premier league. See Southampton for an example on the way you need to constantly push on and that you cannot have any room for sentiment.

I cannot give any likes to this, because of the blatant Andy Townsend-like pluralisation of individuals. As in “Your Man Uniteds and your Arsenals of this world.”

Consider this a warning, young man. :D

Andy Townsend! Biggest ever insult on here, bar none.:)

Well for me, it should be a Wilder dynasty like that Fergie had or Wenger has. He has done more than enough to earn my support, time and backing, even if he does throw the bottom lip out occasionally! Not only that but I would LOVE to meet the man to try and work out where the fuck he gets his work ethic, his dynamism and his magnetic personality. In Wilder and Knill we trust? No, in Wilder and Knill I believe and have faith!

Any club that gave any manager a ten year contract would be bonkers.
United need to support the manager and can't expect him to hang around if he isn't reasonably supported.
I seem to remember Porterfield was given a long contract by Brearley with a promise to extend it if he ever got us into the Rest Division (as was).

Good. Let that be a lesson to you. Hopefully that twat Glenn Hoddle reads this forum too, he’s been guilty of Townsending on more than one occasion. ;)

Hoddle just sligjtly better, not much.

By the way I did only say Jagielkas, Lescotts and Woodgates.

This seems a bit harsh, Hoddle FGS!I

What makes you think Wilder would even sign a 10 year contract?

If he is as ambitious as you say and as confident in his own ability he would be stupid to sign such a long contract.
