5 for me. Palace was my first ever away game & the first game I shed a tear at over the blades.

If we manage to win at Wembley next Saturday, I’m sure the tears will flow again with a release of emotion after all those previous disappointments.

My pain and suffering watching the Blades goes much further back than the modern playoff period , the very worst being when the grunters pipped us to promotion by a tiny fraction by drawing with Spurs on the final match of the season.

Silent will no doubt provide details of this scenario when it was heavily rumoured that the Spurs players who were already promoted , each travelled back to London carrying a set of expensive Sheffield cutlery .

Be that as it may , I have also experienced some wonderfully uplifting experiences the most outstanding of which has to be the thrashing of Newcastle on their own ground in the FA Cup in the early ‘60s along with 18,000 other Blades .

I have also had the great pleasure of watching three of the most talented footballers any fan could wish to see represent their club being those of Jimmy Hagan , Tony Currie and the peerless Joe Shaw .

I have a good feeling that our present squad will provide me with another of those memorable occasions when we go to Wembley .

1950. Wendy 0 Spurs 0, we had completed our fixtures a week before (beat Hull 5-0) Wendy played their match against Spurs. If it had been a 1-1 draw then a play-off between us and Wendy would have been probable. If it was a 2-2 draw then we would have got up

Is this because of Goal Average or some such nonsense? I can`t think of a situation today (where positions are decided by GD then GF) where a higher scoring draw would disadvantage a team.

Yes, goal average, if Wendy and Spurs had drew 2-2 then their goal average would have been 1.380 meaning we finish 2nd

For me I was a bit young to remember the '93 match however the 2009 Burnley Playoffs, I thought we had a side capability of doing something that day. The Hull cup match was a proud day to be honest. The Palace playoff's were at that stage of why did I get brought up a blade 😂 and although ultimately although the Huddersfield game could have gone either way especially in a shoot out that for me was the most frustrating, I was in the lower tier getting burnt to a crisp, we had slow side with no strikers, literally Cresswell coming off for Porter in the 80th min or so said it all really.

Just wondering how many of our Wembley heartaches (1993 onwards) folks on here have been in attendance for? I've been to all 6 and I'm praying 7 is the lucky number! 🙏
+ all the semi final defeats & all the League Cup semi defeats = 12 on the bounce. 13 would be my lucky number ffs

Pigs - Too young to remember everything about the semi final, though remember singing Alan Corks name on the concourse at half time. After that it was a blur, got home with my dad late at night and it was passing it down.

Palace - again, no recollection other than the goal.

Wolves - Less said the better, was awful to get there, think we got diverted through the valleys and an even worse journey home.

Burnley - They scored within about 15 minutes(?) and it was a long game after that. Never saw us getting back into it.

Huddersfield - sunburnt to fuck and how we lost after they missed their first 3(?) pens, god only knows..

Sunderland - The best chance we’ve had to date.

Whenever the next one is, I’ll be there, not sure my dad has the same inclination to join me, unfortunately.

UTB!!!!

We"ve not ticked off "squandered a 3 goal lead" yet...
Ooh, we’ve got plenty more to give. We haven’t yet ticked off:

  • Reduced to ten men after two minutes
  • VAR overturns last-minute disallowed goal
  • Concede from a corner that 100% wasn’t a corner
  • Freak own goal
  • Opposition score whilst three of our players down injured
  • Referee awards indirect free kick for keeper holding onto the ball for more than six seconds (then concede the free kick)
We can now tick off ‘squandered a lead’, ‘VAR overturns decisive goal’, and ‘Opposition score whilst main central defender is off the field injured by teammate’.

I’ve been to all the Wembley losses. Only been to the home legs of all the play-off semis and league cup semis. Went to OT for Arsenal - genuinely can’t remember if I watched the Newcastle semi at OT live or in the pub - I think that may have been the only one I missed, no idea why.
