Well...Would You Be Pleased?

Agree 100%. But do your expectations include succession planning within the squad? Or is that too much to ask when managers only get a year at it?

McCabe's latest comments suggests that Wilder may be allowed to continue, even if he doesn't get us up next season, but we have to be moving in the right direction. Adkins played mostly with 30 year olds, only brought in/looked at players from higher divisions and chose tactics that promised nothing in terms of development. We had some ok games if we scored first, but generally it was painful watching us under Adkins. Hopefully things will be very different under Wilder. I think these comments from McCabe are good:

Guesswork, heresay and rumour. The backbone of this forum.

Rumour has it that Adkins spent £1.5 million on players last season. Since he only signed Billy for a fee then you're looking at a million between Hammondo, Woolfordo, Baptisteo, Edgar and possibly Sammonado.

If we're saying Smurf went for £1.5 then you have his, and the wages, of ever player no longer on the books at the end of the season. A millions seems reasonable. Possible slightly less.

We don't know the amounts paid to players out on loan and the ones being released now are still being paid. I'd be surprised if your figure of a million profit is right.

Well, Murphy would have been on a fair wage, as would Collins. I would guess that many of the others (Scougs, Freeman, McNulty, Harris etc) were on more than they should have been.

It just annoys me that suddenly budget and sending includes wages. It never used to do either in the accounts or in terms of discussion. It smacks on another to not spend money.

I'd prefer honesty. If we've not got that much to spend I'd rather just be told about it. Fine, he is now, but it's several years of mismanagement and waste and half truths too late.

If you won't count Sammon you surely can't count Murphy as it wasn't Adkins decision to sell him.

McCabes said its a reduced budget and is getting stick for it. That's honesty! How much reduced is anyone's or rather everyone's guess.

I really don't understand the comment about budget never including wages. Wages have always been in the accounts.

Snippet from an interview with McCabe. He reckons that if we didn't go up next season but showed "improvement" then the fans would be pleased, or at least would accept that "it takes time".

Well Kev, I can only speak for myself but I certainly would neither be pleased nor accepting after 6 years and counting. Especially given that time is the one thing your managers don't get.

McCabe boils my piss.

If Wilder does not get us promoted next season then I fully expect him to be shown the door.

I've had enough of continual 12 month "bouncing back" plans, now is the time for us to concentrate on moving forward as a club and improving the squad year by year.

My expectations from Wilder is

  • a clearly defined, modern, effective playing style
  • confidence in his own football philosophy
  • well balanced team selections
  • an open mind and honesty when assessing players and performances
  • him looking for players that fit each role, and whose attributes complement the other players
  • preventing collective weaknesses to become a problem (i.e. lack of pace, height, leadership, skill, goal-scoring ability)
  • professionalism and right attitude from every player
Let's not look too much at the table, certainly early on. Focus on enjoying the football and us moving in the right direction. I'm sure promotion will happen sooner that way.

Great, great post.

I'd be happy with promotion, be it automatic or through the play offs. Stop fucking about Kev. If you genuinely think we have finally got the right man and have been tracking him for a while now then show him that your ambition matches his and ours

Like he was tracking Adkins for a while....and Clough for a while and so on...

Totally agree, so long as we progress on this, we will increase our chances of promotion, since Wilson was in charge we've been nowhere near promotion.

I don't think any of us would be happy with less than promotion but I think (and I hope) he means as long as we have a right good go and it's clear to see we are a force to be reckoned with again, then the fans would be pleased with the progress - he just didn't word it especially well!
Although our Kev (and board) has dropped some monumental bollocks over several years I get the feeling the appointment of CW isn't one of them and could turn out to be a masterstroke! Time will tell and I think that time will be around the end of September when the league table starts to take shape.

UTMB!

The club needs someone who is driven to get the club up!
instead of an owner who says it will be ok if we don't get promotion next season the fans will be happy with some progress upwards.
He sounds defeated with no energy to provide anr excitement or drive to the club get a grip McCabe how many more years of dithering in this league with lame excuses while the bunch across the city show you how it is done.

When the co-owner of a football club, publicly announces he'll be happy with failure, albeit a small failure
why should I/we spend our hard earned on that?

Sorry Mr McCabe.
But I'm not remotely inspired by you and those comments.
I've never been and i'll not start today by being happy with failure.

SUFC = Supporting Uninspiring Failure Club.

I need to see attacking football all the time, goals, entertainment.
I want to see professional attitudes not drunken posing on the Moor after another tosh display. Show pride in your club. And in your role.

Fantastic post mate, I agree completely, especially with the sentence about collective weaknesses

Kev, you're looking tired. The strain of the last few years has took its toll. It is time for your health s sake to give it up. You gave it a go and no one will think any the worse of you :tumbleweed:.....

Don't be complaining this time next season if we finish 10th.

By my workings out, if SUFC finish a place higher every season, we'll be guaranteed promotion by 2024/25*

Ya'll do for me Kev. Ain't that just a swell thought?

*That's if we've never been relegated in the years leading up.

I don't either, similar assurances were given with regard to Adkins.

They were, and if we'd had a better season, or at least equalled Clough's achievements, then I think he'd still be sitting in the office. But for me, ultimately our worst season for a long time, and uninspring / underachieving signings did for him.

So would I be pleased if we didn't go up? Of course not, but I'd like to think that we can show some improvement on the season just gone, some hope that we are going forward.

I for one don't mind us publicly announcing that our budget is going to be significantly cut. Too long have the club been held to ransom by players and agents milking us for all we are worth because we are "a big club".

Granted, we should have the people in place to scrutinise all signings and stop players using our perceived financial clout to inflate their wage demands.

However I would hope that our new recruitment policy will be more in line with signing players that would jump at the chance of playing for Sheffield United instead of "Sheffield United are interested and they have a huge league 1 budget - lets ask for the going wage plus 20%"

I'm no fan of McCabe after what he's done to the club, but what he says here seems reasonable. We want promotion, but if we don't get it, we need to see progression and believe that a team is being put together that is strong and on the up and that we have a manager who is taking things in the right direction - in which case the fans will accept the situation and the manager will be given a second season.
To compare that with Adkins, who did none of those things, makes no sense.

But it can be McCabe that fucks it up ...................... yet again, but the manager carries the can, again

Wilder can do all the planning he wants, he needs to remember that a £500K bid for Che, 2 games into the Season will be accepted

and the money will be re-invested by McCabe, and swallowed up by day to day running costs
