Would that be the Gil Reece photo in my 'Park Drive' [don't smoke kids, you be dead in a fortnight] yearbook 1969 or 1970? he's upright but high in the air volleying the ball? if you like and it's the shot, I'll scan it for thi.

Flynn did ok today. Porter was awful, but after a recent reasonable few games, I'm assured. It's not about not being able to like certain players, it's the reality that we must raise our ambition above the level of these players if we don't want to enter Englands 4th division. Of late, they are no better or worse than the rest, but with many of the other players there remains an element of doubt as to if they really are as poor as they've looked.

Things are beginning to turn around for us. With a bit of momentum we will be able to make a better assessment of who's worth keeping.

a lot of us have been saying try flynn at right back for ages.. he has a good engine and gets stuck in .. can play a good ball in but isn't quite fast enough off the mark to go past defenders by himself one on one.. it really is a no brainer.

footballers perform on confidence , look at Chamakh at palace , looked one idle turd at Arsenal near the end , looked like a small Ibrohimovich yesterday , all oursquad looked deflated under Weir , they are better than average league one players when properly motivated, they are just getting back to a more acceptable level under Nigel

That photo in Park Drive book was his goal against Middlesboro in August 1969 (we won 3-0, Woody getting the other two). Sitwell is talking about the flying header for Reece's 2nd goal against Birmingham in April 1971 (we also won 3-0, Woody scoring once). He dived head first and his body was horizonally in the air

Fantastic sight Salmons running at defences. I can see the similarity to Bale. Went to Stoke after us and they were competing at the top of the 1st division.
Think he scored direct from a corner into Kop end for us , then repeated the fate at stoke , only think mind not 100% on it .

It's quite an interesting one TBH. Some of those players you've listed I don't agree with, some I do....

Long - Agreed
McMahon - Agreed, although a lot better this season. We look weaker without him.
Maguire - Agreed, but too slow
Collins - Easily our best centre half. We were top last season when he got injured.
Hill - Agreed. Very poor left back
Flynn - Think he's a scapegoat. Offers a lot defensively. Tracks back extremely well and always puts in loads of work for the team.
Doyle - Not as bad as most people make out. Doesn't help himself with some wayward passes. If he wins the ball and plays it to his nearest team mate, he'd be ideal.
McGinn - Best midfielder in the squad. Easily.
Coady - Not sure he knows his best position.
Murphy - Agreed
Baxter - Hit n Miss unfortunately
Porter - Let's himself down with the sitters he misses. Can't fault his build up play.
White - agreed
Lappin - Disagree totally. Very steady and composed player.
Miller - Once fully fit, could be prolific.
Cuvellier - Agreed

The only time he scored direct from a corner for us was in the 1-0 win at Maine Road in March 1974 (Jim Brown's debut) but I do not know if he did the same for Stoke. He scored both goals for Stoke in their 2-1 win against us in November 1975 (Jimmy Johnstone's debut). His first goal was an executed lob from outside the penalty box and I think his second was from a penalty. Woody reduced the arrears with a penalty

Ha,ha..the old Park drive Book of Football. My uncle used to get them for me..he must have smoked a lot of fags, but they were great books..can't remember the Gil Reece picture though.
Was the diving header his 2nd goal SB?..it's just I thought the one where he beat 3 Brum players running towards the Kop was his 2nd and our 3rd,but my memory is probably playing tricks.
That goal though where he beat the 3 Brum defenders is one of my favourite United goals.

Reece and Salmons were different kind of players. Reece gets into good scoring positions and attacking crosses (especially from Woody) but he wasnt really a good crosser of the ball (Salmons was better than him at that also when it came to playing passes). Salmons might be taller but Reece was better at heading the ball. Salmons was similar to Dane Whitehouse and Reece was similar to Andy Walker. Walker and Whitehouse were different kind of players too
I remember GS struggled when he first came into the side..He used to hardly get past the FB at first.after a few games though he found more confidence and started to go past Full Backs with ease and became a great winger. For me,Gil had the skill, had a trick or two and a decent turn of pace, especially over the first few yards...a different type of player to Salmons who like has been said was a bit Bale like when running with the ball.. more powerful and a great player to watch in full flow, flying down the wing.Reece more Peschisolido/Laudrupesque maybe.

GS struggled when he first got into the side and John Harris sent him to work with a Blacksmith to build up his upper body strength. When he came back he was much improved but was still no great shakes as a winger. Yes he was speedy but in those days wingers needed more than just pace. As I've said before he became established on the left of midfield behind Reece who was the left winger. Yes he used to overlap at times and other times he would cut inside and run at the defence (hence my comparisons with Bale). That was the whole point. If the fullback followed Reece, he would go inside. If the fullback stayed inside it would be a pass to Reece to cross. Worked brilliantly till our board decided to take the money from Stoke and sell the club's future out yet again. Hence why TC decided to leave.

Thanks for that SB , Appreciate your response . UTB .

Reece's 1st goal against Brum was just before half time. he beat 3 defenders, the policeman and the programme seller before slotting the ball past keeper Mike Kelly (who was our goalkeeping coach in 1992/93 season). Woody scored the 2nd goal before Reece made it 3 with a flying header

Cheers SB,I had it in my head it was our 3rd,it just shows how time can distort your memory..I can still see him now running with the ball..left hand Chanel towards the Kop..Kop roaring him on as he swept past the first Brum defender and curved his run before he turned, cutting right through the middle of the 2 Centre halves..the crowd roared louder before a sort of silent pause where you could hear the thud of the ball before he buried it past the keeper...If only there could have been a tv camera to capture it.

When you say you could hear the thud of the ball, it brings back the memory of when Gil's leg was broken. Think I was about 12 at the time and when he was tackled I'd never heard such a loud thunderous crack. He went down and didn't get up, which at that time meant it was bad. Was a bad break if memory serves me and he did well to come back as well as he did.

Ive heard leg breaks 3 times I think ,Tom Macallisters Brian Smiths and Simon websters.

It's about my earliest memory of going to the Lane GB..I was on the John Street East Terrace and remember Gil going down on the far side of the pitch(Pavillion side)directly across from where I was stood.I remember my Dad saying he's broke his leg and him being carried off on the stretcher.
At least that is how I remember it...can't remember who scored or much else apart from it was Blackpool and they were in Tangerine shirts..that's about it.

Probably stood near us then. Went with my elder brother to that game and he always went on the John St East. I preferred the Kop at the time but none of my mates went that game. Must have left an impression though cause I still remember it and cringe to this day.

Just looked in the bible and it was Blackpool home Nov 12th 1966 and result was 1-1 Woody scoring a pen. Won 1-0 at their place (Cliff) and finished 10th in Div 1. Luxury :(

Ha,ha..If you noticed a little scrote climbing on the white fence it was probably me then.
We usually went on the Kop aswell..but occasionally Lane End or John Street.I can't remember Woody's penalty though, but like you say the leg break stuck in my mind.
I've just looked it up aswell GB..have a look at the Christmas/New year fixtures..Lost to Dirty Leeds twice in 2 days...can't imagine playing so many games in a week now...at least we beat Wendy 1-0 that season and 2-2 at the Sty.
