Obviously for the overall change in performances but specifically the substitution of Jamie Murphy. When I saw he was coming on I expected him to go on the wing and create a 5 in midfield, but he was sent on up front and looked good. A brave move which nearly created a goal. Perhaps he can only play when everyone else is knackered but even if he doesn't get a start up front he's a good option off the bench. Perhaps a start up top in the cup would be good for him, especially if he got a goal.
 

I have been saying play him as a striker and he will do well.

Nigel came to me for the advice. :)

Over the years we have had managers that seem to want to play strikers on the wing for some reason.

Like Cresswell being played on the left wing!
 
Murphy, like Flynn and many others seem very much to be confidence players. If he gets a game up front/in the hole and gets a couple of goals I can see him going on a good run and solving our goals problem from within. People think we need to add in January, which may be the case, but an in position, confident Murphy would be as good as a new signing.

Yes Motherwell played him more of a striker then a winger.
When he signed I think we all were hyped up to see him putting that ball in the net, with the goals he scored for Motherwell the season before, but then Wilson put him on the wings just like Blackman.
Wilson must have thought pacey strikers make good wingers.

Mind you, I think we actually had six or seven (ex) wingers in the team at one time

What was the season/game when we bizarrely signed ex Derby striker Tommy Johnson and he played on the right wing? Darren ?

His one game was against Rotherham on 26/2/05. We won 1-0 and I believed Johnson was substituted at half time.

Although the Rothmans' Yearbook has him down as playing more games for us than that. Think they got him mixed up with David Johnson.

(Not sure that gets into my top 1,000 posts but I've typed it out now....)

Strange one that, because I remember him playing at home (to much bewilderment of the crowd because he came in from nowhere and was also playing on the right wing) but I didn't think it was against Rotherham.
 
Jamie murphy has potential as a striker, I think he needs to be stronger to last in this league tho

Woodward, Salmons, Dearden and Scullion or Reece – four wingers in the forward line (Currie the odd man out).
 
Salmons was tried on the left wing but can't ever remember him beating his fullback. On the other hand once he was established at left midfield behind Gil Reece and was able to run at central defenders at pace he was unbeatable (Gareth Bale reminds me a lot of him). Again well done John Harris. Don't know about Bill Dearden before he came to the Lane but I'm sure he always started upfront for us.

I do remember Salmons beating his full back for pace several times as he was quite fast. He played in a deeper role in his last two or three seasons at the Lane especially after Hockey broke his leg. He had a good long throw too. His crossing and finishing wasnt as deadly as Woody also Woody was good in getting to the end of long passes often stopped the ball dead like Glyn Hodges did. We didnt really have a left winger in 1972/73 or in 1973/74 and Woody often would switch to the left when he felt that he would find more space there
 
He could beat most players for pace. When he was coming from deep he could use his pace and his close control at pace was second to none. But without a run up to build up his pace he was a bit lost against a good fullback. Gil Reece had far more in his locker and so was preferred on the wing. Woody was and still is the best all round winger I've ever seen in red and white. TC got most of the plaudits but that team had some cracking players.

Reece and Salmons were different kind of players. Reece gets into good scoring positions and attacking crosses (especially from Woody) but he wasnt really a good crosser of the ball (Salmons was better than him at that also when it came to playing passes). Salmons might be taller but Reece was better at heading the ball. Salmons was similar to Dane Whitehouse and Reece was similar to Andy Walker. Walker and Whitehouse were different kind of players too

Looking back to pacy left wingers Bill Punton comes to mind. He seemed older that his years but he could catch pigeons
 
Len Alllchurch. Right winger.
Cost Harris £ 12,500 from Swansea March1961, scored on his début, a 2-1win at Leeds, and added 5 more in the final 7 games that got us promoted..
 
Gil Reeces flying Welshman picture from the lane line up in 1971 is my favourite Utd picture. Cant find it on the net ,and cant be bothered to go in the attic and search the programmes :)

Reece used to score plenty with his head always lurking at the back post at set pieces.
A part of his game that went unnoticed .
 
Fantastic sight Salmons running at defences. I can see the similarity to Bale. Went to Stoke after us and they were competing at the top of the 1st division.

I know TC was furious when we sold Salmons in Summer 1974. A year earlier TC agreed to sign a long contact after the board promised to sign new players and build the team around him. Had we kept Salmons would we have had more points in the 1974-75 season and possibly finish as champions?

Murphy and Baxter were both good today.

I genuinely don't believe we need another striker or central midfielder in January. Simply drop Doyle... and probably Porter and we'll improve.

I know people give them breaks because they try hard, but they're simply not up to it and bring the rest of the team down. I've said it before, but when people feel obliged to point out that "Doyle/Porter actually wasn't that bad today", there's quite clearly something wrong with their usual level of performance.
