Well done England ...

For total misunderstanding of my post, or the one that preceded it - this takes the fucking biscuit.

I understood your post - that the team wasn’t actually that young.

I just happen to think that’s ridiculous - ok so you seem to be referring to the starting line up to qualify your statement, of which only 3 were alive when England last played in a WC semi, two of which were alive by a matter of weeks, players like Alli (22), Sterling (23) stones (24) Pickford (24) Kane (24) Maguire (25) Lingard (25) - are all young. That’s 7 of the starting team aged 25 or less.

You then bizarrely use the example of France who have the youngest side in the tournament as some sort of qualifier for what you are saying, as if that makes our players suddenly 10 years older.

Haters gonna hate.

I did say that it's not an especially young starting team, nearly all the players you mention are going to be at their peak at the next World Cup, but there are other factors which I said in my original post (#682) which makes all that fairly meaningless. I'm not going to repeat it all again, but football matches are always actually played in the present, not in the future

I don't know, and neither do you or anyone else, who will have a good side at the next Euros, let alone the next World Cup.

I also agreed with Ricky that England has exceeded expectations this time and that it proves a certain lack of quality is no barrier to doing well in these tournaments.

Kane was born on 23/7/93 and is 24.

If you are going to start some odd argument about the relative age of the team compared to France, at least get your facts right.

He's 25 in 10 days time. So OK he's 24.9726. Pedants all around.

Facts are facts. He's 24, not 25. And Kane was the youngest captain at this World Cup.

We also had the 2nd youngest first choice goalkeeper (after Nigeria).

The average age of a player at this World Cup was 28. We only had three players in our entire squad who were older than that, Young (32), Cahill (32) and Vardy (31). And out of those three only Young got any real game time.

In Vietnam it was 19.

I'm sick of hearing about this "young" England team. The team, the actual team Southgate put out every game, was not so young. The average age of the French side which started against Belgium was lower than England's against Croatia, and that was with the geriatric Giroud and Matuidi in it.

Was interested in as I thought it would be much closer than you made out.

Anyhow, sorry to piss on your chips sir, but the average age of the England XI vs Croatia was younger than that of their French counterparts.

And Pickford?

Goalkeepers are not footballers.

I have no idea why so many of you are obsessed with this whole age thing. So England's team is on average 18 months younger than most other teams. So fecking what? They're grown men with lots of tattoos, not bloody children.

That Lingard is 25 or if he was 28, or Kane is 24.9 or 26.3 has no bearing at all on the next Euros, let alone the next World Cup as I tried to explain earlier, but as usual there's always a few who focus on the wrong thing.

Seems you're rather obsessed too.

Looked into the stats enough (despite being wrong twice).

The first comment isn't even worth a response.

If a goalkeeper is young and depresses the team's average age, he is patently 'not a footballer'.

An old keeper however, may well 'be a footballer' if he makes your dodgy stats look more valid.

If only we'd brought back Shilton to play in Russia, this whole debate could have easily been avoided as our avergae age would have been about 87.5. This would only have been beaten by Porterfield's United team of the mid 80s.

He could have got away with it, if he'd only used Sterling instead of Pickford ;-)

What the hell are they then?

You lot are a right barrel of laughs aren't you?

Obviously the goalkeeper comment is not meant to be taken seriously.

My actual fucking point I stand by completely. That is post #682 and the focus is on the final three paragraphs

Ahhh the old 'shit I look a twat, better pass it off as a joke' card.

Good one.

No matter what, I shall be watching today and supporting the National team. Expectations levelled to where they should be, eternal hope not. It is the same with United. Those who continue to slag off genuine supporters whilst claiming a higher plain will continue to do so stating crap like " I'll be watching the proper football tomorrow". And no matter what the result today they will continue to live in their Utopian football bubble. as said previous. Me and many others will continue to dream on the Blades front and the England front. Realistic supporters we are. Focusing on the positives and hope through the crap times. Those "I know a better level of football that you will never see" types do not live in the real world of football anyway. They still think Roy of the Rovers is real. Meanwhile most of us that will be supporting the England Team today will also be watching tomorrow. Not thinking crap like "We will never have an English player that will be able to do that". just waiting patiently through this summers hurt with pride and a more realistic view than the Utopians.

I've said many times I can prove I know nowt about football cause I've followed the blades for 60 years.

But, why is everyone getting so wax-lyrical about our World Cup performance?

We lost 3 games, struggled against Tunisia, numerous players underperformed (Alli, sterling, vardy et al). OK we got to the third place play off by a easy draw but were never in it.

Now people want Southgate knighted, even we rejected him. Give the honours to hard working charity workers that raise millions for good causes not an overpaid failed international with no manigerial experience to speak of.

While our football set up favours developing other countries younger players on millions ours will never develop into a strong skilful international squad.

Highlights for me were Harry Leadboots, Harry's golden boot (if he gets it) and Pickford.

This ^. And kane got lucky. A tap in, a 3 yard header, a deflection he knew nothing about and the rest were pens. The last 4 games he was shit. It was the only chance of winning a World Cup in my lifetime and they did slightly better than Sweden. They can now go home to their mansions and Ferrari’s with the nations adulation. Having said that I’ll be singing it’s coming home in 2022 if we qualify because I’m a glory hunting bitter twisted football fan.

why get out of bed ?

England gave us hope but in reality it was false hope. We knew we should beat Columbia & Sweden and we did, job done at that point. It was then a case of whether the hype about us being a sudden major player would in reality play out against a good technical siade like Croatia. We swamped them with pressure, passion and pace in the first half but wilted 2nd half and the quality eventually did for us like it usually does. We are almost there, just need 2 or 3 techincally gifted players to take us to the next level, where they come from is anyones guess.

Sorry for being negative fm. I grew up watching the blades from around the middle of the south stand since 1977 and I think the bitter angry folk who did nothing but slag off young kids trying to make it as footballers, solely because as long suffering fans, they were desperate for us to destroy all before us has had a lasting effect on me and turned me cynical and pessimistic. Apologies again, this england at least looked like they could give a f.......monkeys.

It was the arrogance of that time that lead to the decline in United and England By '82 things were looking better for both but the underlying "right we're back" do nowt attitude did for both again with the occasional bit of success. Now both are looking in a healthier state again will we push forward or slip once more on both fronts?

Lingard makes the squad primarily cos of his engine. He isn’t very good technically.

No sure what Alli brings these days, other than a questionable attitude. He is quite tall !

Trippier has had a good tournament. But he does play the wing back role, which I am sure you will know DEMANDS a high level of athletic prowess.

I will leave you with this.

A statement of fact with precisely no evidence to back up !

There is only one current England player who’s name will ever have been mentioned in the boardrooms of the European super clubs with any degree of seriousness. His name is Kane.

It’s possible that Walker has been murmured, and also that one or two that have had a good WC2018 (we know who they are ) MIGHT get mentions in the future.

But you have to go back several decades to find an Englishman that has gone abroad to an Elite side and genuinely been a success. For all the reasons I have stated.

Vive the LJB revolution :)
