Frank Barlow was never the quickest defender around but he read the game well and wasn't afraid to put his foot in.
In the twilight of his career he slowed down, and now and again mistimed a tackle.
Towards the end of a reserve game, the referee blew for a foul and called Frank over.It seemed that Frank was due an early bath and the crowd gave the ref some stick.
All was not as it seemed however because, like Frank, the ref was getting on a bit and his words to Frank were along the lines of--- "Now then Frank, the crowd think I'm sending you off but I'm not. We are both absolutely knackered and I thought while I talked to you we could both have a bit of a rest" With that, play was resumed and both ref and player got their second wind.
