What you're saying makes perfect sense if you ignore the fact that John stones is still an Everton player, and that we don't need to sell our best players but still do..
Ah but it does on plenty occasions you just love to pull the blades to pieces
Is it the bloke that draws our players contracts up that hasn't got a clue? My bet is these clauses are mutually beneficial and of course are inserted because of that..

Murphy was happy here, settled with a new baby I believe...
Macdonald was last minute....
And maguire, well rumours are we chased hull up the car park and did the deal before they drove off....

Finally if what you're suggesting is true we may as well just give up signing players anyway, cause anybody any good can just fuck off at the drop of a hat and screw the team up....

Funny how it doesn't seem to happen to other clubs though ????

But it does on plenty of occasions you are just using this to have a dig at the blades

Oh fucking hell....... What a comment....

A dig.....

Can you not tell desperation and disappointment from having a fucking dig??

Can It really be just me that's fed up with the hopelessness that appears to be us keeping our best players and building something on the pitch worth watching....

If we're saying we can't do anything to stop any player moving because he wants to, then again what's the fucking point getting players to sign contracts?

We could force them to stay but will their performances drop? Its certainly happened before in football (berahino), it has also gone the other way (Stones).

Maybe the board/management don't want a player around who doesn't want to be here and maybe thinks they are bigger than the club. It can't do much for morale when you've got a want away or two in the dressing room.

IMO you have to look at it on a case by case basis dependent on, the players personality, transfer fee, current wages and suitable available replacements.

If good money comes in for Che i'd take it, I'm all up for nurturing youth players etc and maybe he will be worth 4/5m (unlikely if we are still in league 1) in a couple of years. While ever we are in this league I want players that are good enough to get us promoted now and 2/3m "added to the transfer fund" would certainly help that more than Che Adams at the minute.

Are people posting these things from a template?

Unsubstantiated rumour - CHECK
Outrage at said rumour - CHECK
Regurgitated critique of the board - CHECK
Pithy "Gag" about the fax machine - [there's still time]

And the circle of life continues...

You missed "Eulogy about how he was/would have gone on to be the best player that's ever played for us."

I take on board your points... Although nobody's been sold yet, if we keep selling the better players then league one is where we will be for the foreseeable future..

Man Utd didn't win all those titles by cashing in, they built a team around them, we sell, so we fail...

Everton - bit more money than us and can hold out for a bit more for their better players.

Did John Stones inform his current employers that he wishes to leave? (If not, that can explain that situation, if he did......well that would be published all over).

Well, we did have a bloke that drew up stupid contracts and didn't have a clue in the recent past so it wouldn't surprise me.

Murphy - may have been happy here, but went on record of saying he wanted to move in order to get a look in for the Scotland squad.........

McDonald - yes was last minute but I don't elude to that in my post, I simply stated a club looking to bounce straight back up offered him more money than what we were paying him (probably because they could afford to).

Maguire - we rejected the bid from Hull, who then went out and bought another defender instead. Maguire by all accounts (so don't take it as source) spat his dummy out and wanted to move, so we went back to Hull and said do you still fancy taking him.

I didn't say that is true for all players, but for the majority, and certainly whilst we are in the position we are in (league one club) - any player who plays outstanding is going to be a target for a higher division club looking to strengthen. Why wouldn't they be?
And yes, that's life unfortunately (and business) that there is the chance someone who is key in the team is then poached/purchased by another club that could (and has shown to be the case in recent years for us) leave the overall team weakened.

I think you'll find it does happen to the vast majority of clubs (including some of the highest). It's football.....if it didn't, there wouldn't be transfers........

Forgive me for not following the trails and tribulations of all other football clubs in this country with regards to their transfer activity, but if I did, I'm sure I would find the same whereby the best players at said clubs do get sold to others on a frequent basis.

Stop going off as if players who join United should not ever be attracted to maybe one day playing at a higher level with a club who are already there (a la premiership, and currently the championship as well), and who can offer them more money/better package for their services. Money isn't everything, but it helps (and can turn heads of the majority!), particularly when you have to get as much as you can over a short career span footballers have.

We are not Man City, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Chelsea. We are not the pinnacle of a good footballers career (at least not yet - we can only dream!). Sorry to break it to you but in football, as just as in normal life, people generally always look to better themselves, which usually comes at the expense of someone (current employer!)

I know what you are saying but Manchester United for the past 20 years have been the biggest club in England (maybe the world) so they have a much bigger pulling power.

You're right that it would be good to build around 1 or 2 key players for years but unfortunately its impossible, just look at Southampton, their squad has been destroyed in 2 years. However their scouting system seems slightly better than ours and have found a way to replace them.

Man utd sold Ronaldo cus he wanted to go contracts are meaningless when a player wants to go. Bosmann means the player has all the ages

Understatement of the year!

Everton have Premier league money, they are in a far better position than we are to stop players moving to Premier league teams.
Barnsley were powerless to stop Stones moving into the Premier league, as are most Championship sides, and no side in league one/two could stop players moving.

Its nothing to do with `lack of ambition`, its the modern game, Premier league clubs look to hoover up young players, especially English players.

Total and utter nonsense. A contract is a legally binding document between an employee and an employer. There's absolutely nothing other than the boards personal choice, that says a player under contract must leave when any interest comes in. It's fact, you can't argue against it.

Isn't the difference between Stones and Adams sort of like the difference between a proven pedigree and a complete novice?

With Stones he will appreciate in value the longer you hold on to him.

Not the case with Adams. His future success has more 'buts' than 'ifs' IMO and if we refuse 2m then we may be left with nothing in 12months time. Look at Slew rather than Walker in this case. The lad is raw as a player and also his attitude.

In any case it won't happen. These clubs know all the real talent in the country above 8 years old.

Good point. Also Stones is on good money at Everton so will find it easier to resist the temptation of better money. Che won't be on £20k per week or more so it's much easier to turn his head.

We have no idea what discussions happened between Everton and Stones, what they said to keep him happy. Perhaps they have a gentlemen's agreement that he can go at the end of the season. And perhaps we had the same with Murphy when he signed a new contract, maybe we said 'if we don't go up this season, you can go if someone makes a good offer for you'.
Yes, we could have reneged on it but word soon gets around and the next Murphy won't make the same mistake.
Same with Che, if we stop him from moving to a big club what happens next time we are competing with other clubs for a young player? He'll have been told what happened to Che and he'll go somewhere else.

That's a bit nieve barney we all know that if a player wants to go he will get his wish in the end

Ok, great thread..

But how's about this, we make a player see his contract out, you know the one he was doing cartwheels over a year ago because he'd signed for sheff Utd, and had "made it" in football..

Or..

We say it's ten million, in the clause, cause it's fuck all to man city, man Utd, Spurs, etc .. Etc..

Show some resolve, put a team on the pitch worth watching, get more fans at the game....blah..blah...blah..

Doesn't anybody else want to watch a decent team..is it just me.. On my fucking jack...??

"Yes lad, come in, shut the door and sit down. I've sensed a bit of an attitude in you in training the last couple of days and wanted to have a word with you about it. I take it, it's because we turned the bid down for you from City."

"Well, yeah, that was my big chance. I mean, you know, Sheffield United is ok, but I could be playing in Europe!"

"Maybe you could, and maybe you'd be bench warming before being loaned out to Colchester. But that's not the point. You've a contract with us, no one forced you to sign it, and I - and the club - expect you to honour it."

"I know I signed a contract, but how can you expect me to be happy here when you've stopped me making my dream move?"

"Well, firstly, the offer wasn't enough. £3 million is not what we think you're worth. They aren't after a first team player for that money. If they really aren't going to just sit you on the bench, or worse, bang you in the reserves, then they'll come back with a serious offer that we can't refuse. Then you can go. If they don't then you'll carry on here, showcasing what you've got and if you're really good enough, someone else will come in for you. That's how it works when you sign a contract. It has to work for both of us to let you out of it."

"But I'm not sure I can motivate myself anymore"

"Well, if you can't, then it'll be our reserves that you'll be playing for. Then no one will want you. So don't try that mallarky, because no player is bigger than Sheffield United. The board may lose a couple of million, but that's nothing compared to the money we get from promotion - or what we'd get for a proper offer for you - so don't think you won't be dropped if you don't show some commitment. So have a think about it, don't blow your career with a mardy sulk, if you're as talented as you think you are - and I think you are - this is only the beginning. Okay? Go on now, shut the door on the way out."
