We Played Like a Bunch of Old Pros

It wasn't professional and we should have lost that one. We got away with it today, simple as that.

Absolutely. Loved the 3 points but that's about it. I'd love for us to go on a run now, but there's nothing in that performance Sunday that suggests to me that anything like that is about to happen soon. We could have lost that game in a blink and for me, I don't really see any signs of improvement anywhere.

Hope I'm wrong.

How about if we play the same style, with the same vigour against opponents weaker than Coventry? It might not be very good football, but is it a start?

I think if their goal had rightfully stood and McCevely had rightfully been sent off, our change of style would have been masked by the reality of the result - so it was really just luck.

But sometimes an upturn in fortune comes from an element of luck. It's more that I'm hoping for, then convincing myself that there was anything in that performance.

I agree, on the day Coventry were unlucky (without wanting to get back into the debate of whether "luck" plays any role whatsoever), my point being, had we played that team, in that manner, against Shrewsbury we might have had a better result, and could do against Scunthorpe. It's certainly not an improvement in footballing terms, but maybe a better approach to games in this division?

Not for the purists though..

Luck plays a part in each individual game, even if overall it evens itself out. Our goal was very reminiscent of the one we conceded where their player turned round and it rocketed top corner of the back of his head. Oldham?

Couldn't have complained at 1-0, 0-0, or 0-1. We got the rub if the green so 1-0 it was.

And when we do totally control a game like, say, er, Fleetwood (which must appear in every post for now :-)) we get booed for it.

So ugliness, workrate, intimidation, and borderline savagery it is.

It's inevitable that without more versatile players if we stop conceding by being more disciplined positionally then the goals will dry up at the other end too.

Adkins outscoring ethos has gone, in favour of an outdefending ethos.

As I keep saying our problem all season may really have been not finishing the chances we created.

Everyone's looking at the defence and midfield but I think their weaknesses were almost accepted as part of the plan till now.

Shrewsbury wasn't about not trying, it was about not being able to implement a system.

So backs to the wall it is.

And possibly without Baxter or Jam to set Scunthorpe alight it might be more of the same.

My point is that "ugliness, workrate, intimidation, and borderline savagery" and "backs to the wall" only worked based on a huge, unrealistic slice of luck. And I wouldn't really accept that it was evident in such great quantity as you suggest.

I don't really care how we win, especially at the moment - so I'm not against the gist of what you're saying. But I would question if we've got the tools to win using those attributes anyway. Aside from being devoid of the talents required to push on from League division 3 - we 're also slow, weak and unenergetic. We're a team full of nothingness.

New signings will push us on, nothing less - IMHO.

It might represent a start but 'if' is the word - let's see how the next three or four games actually pan out? As it is, with all the style and vigour you are quoting (IMO) we were still very lucky indeed to come out on top.
