I hope I am not alone in this, but when Baldock went down for a while against West Sham, I shit myself! Literally, what do we do if either him or Stevens are out for any length of time, in my book we do not have the right quality players to come in and do a job at this level, I know CW works miracles with players, and Freeman did a good job for a while before, but as we learned in The Championship, he is a quality lad but not really at the level we would need, and on the left even worse, I know the lad from Notts Forest can play there if needed, but for a length of time? in this division? I know people think we need to strengthen in January in a host of positions, but to me this should be priority one and two. Who agrees/disagrees?

You are going to struggle to:
a) sign someone better than Ben Osborn who is happy to play second fiddle
b) sign someone of a similar quality to either Enda or George who is less than £10m, maybe think about spending that sort of money on that area of the pitch when safety is assured

I'd like to see us fuck Freeman off and get someone more reliable at RWB as cover but it's not a necessity

Agree. Id argue that K. Freeman has always done well when filling in for Baldock and would do OK in the role.

Stevens is a different story. Would cost mega bucks to find a LWB of his quality. (Maybe unfair of Osborn - not seen much)

Personally, lets go out and find a player in the same mould as Mcgoldrick. We NEED somebody who can play that role. Again would cost mega bucks, but if we had competition for Mcgoldrick we would be a different animal.

Strength in depth is our Achilles' heel at the moment. Luke Freeman, Besic and Jags are the only 3 'fringe' players who I would feel confident about performing consistently in this division as things stand.

This isn't a dig, it's just the reality for a newly promoted club. We have recruited well, sensibly and within our means, but every match that ticks by until January without the loss of key personnel for any length of time is a relief.

The next transfer window will be a very, very important one for the club.

Dylan Bronn from Gent could cover the positions I mentioned - RCB, LCB and RWB.

Had a decent AFCON. Nearly joined Fiorentina. Slow start this season due to injury. Should reduce asking price.

Tell them, Nicolaus_Copernicus ......

I agree with your concerns, but would imagine CW/AK have plans to cope with them. As you say, Freeman (Kieron) is probably not up to this level defensively, and, having been forward supporting an attack, he is too slow to get back, which gives the opposition time and space to exploit. On the left, maybe Bryan or Osborn could do an occasional job, but longer term, Norrington-Davies would be back up to Stevens.

Fuck Freeman off ,,

lad doesnt get game time, how can he be assessed
theres several still waiting to get a chance

of course theres those thinking we only have to spend another 50 or 70m to improve us in the JTW

tough , we aint doing it , if we fail to stay up will fuck us up for a decade
if we have 38 points in january could spend a bit , other than that nah

our mish mash of ex league one and championship players are proving they are better than that

lets enjoy them proving themselves

Someone who can play RWB or RCB would be ideal and more realistic, I think. Cover for Baldock and Bash. I think Osborn would be fine filling it at LWB and as Akinbiyi says, you may struggle to find someone who is willing to come in and probably not even make the bench.

Holgate or Chambers would have been ideal, but they are both getting games now. Bogle at Derby may be an option, especially if they continue to struggle - not sure about him at RCB though.

Talk of resurrecting Freeman is ludicrous, we'll be bringing Jake Wright back into the squad next. FFS lets start raising the bar for a change and bring someone like Lowton in, we're not skint anymore and we're on our uppers on the pitch as well.

Pisses me off people who write Kieron Freeman off without at least giving him a chance.

Osborn can fill in for Stevens. Jags can cover Egan. Besic can cover Basham.

Why is it ludicrous? Its more ludicrous to think that a current first choice premier league rb will come as cover for Baldock.

He's not getting a chance because he's shite.
And Besic can cover Basham based on what?

snootyfenooty Who mentioned “resurrecting” I think its fair to say Freeman has done well whenever he has been called back into the squad?

In a ideal world we would have cover for all positions, for me, when Mcgoldrick is out of the squad we look poor, I would give anything to find competition for him over any other area in the squad.

Who knows what Wilder thinks is priority number 1.....we don't! But its is ok to discuss it, without slating a player who has done a fantastic job in the time they have been here.

Why is he shite? Hes not let us down too often previously. I suppose you wrote off Lundstrum as well before this season?

And Besic based on the fact he has a good engine and can tackle although i agree it would be a risk playing him there, not sure what his aerial ability is like.

Squad players deserve a chance before being completely written off

They don't come in as cover, they come in to challenge for that position with no guarantee of either of them being first choice. That's what you have to do to improve. Scraping the barrel to find someone who is happy to stay as second fiddle is a recipe for failure. Anyone who is old enough to remember will tell you that our previous sojourns in the top flight, especially the one in the 70s, ultimately failed because the strength in depth in the squad was totally inadequate.

Is he on loan from Kings Landing? Always did a good job of covering Jaime Lannister.

This forum is crazy.

OP asks the question:
Is wing back cover/competition priority in January?

Then we end up slagging off players who have actually got us here (Freeman).

Show some respect.

Just answer with yes or no, followed by the area where you would rather see investment in.

Why are you so insistent Freeman isnt good enough? Dont you think he at least deserves a chance to prove himself? There were a lot on here saying Baldock wasnt good enough before the season started. Now people are shitting themselves if he gets injured. Talk about fickle.

He's had numerous chances in the Championship and was shown up defensively and fitness wise.

Correct, I and most writ Lundstram off, he has found a new role and it's worked for him and us. Not sure how you can say the same about Freeman?

Freeman is a bit part player. He played a minor role in the Championship and isn't anywhere near the first team at PL level. The OP has made a very valid point and investment in the WBs should be a priority. There's nothing wrong with the two in place at the moment but that doesn't mean we shouldn't look to improve. As I said, lets raise the bar and dispel this cloth cap attitude once and for all.

Remember there were plenty going ballistic at the thought of Lundstram starting a single game for us. No wonder Freeman is getting written off. Some get pissed off at pundits/other fans underrating our players. Some of our fans are the fucking worst for it.

Not sure i agree on Freeman. He did no worse than what Lundstrum did for us in the Championship. Dont you think after waiting patiently he at least deserves a chance?
