We have a problem with Cooper

I think the defence and Cooper are just short of confidence. I'm fairly confident our CB department is of a decent standard this season, we are light on attacking options. Almost the opposite of last season

If we were attacking better it eases the pressure on the defence.

Being in a back four watching a midfield and strike force doing fuck all isn't going to bring confidence.

You’d think with our track record of making players play through injuries (O’Connell, Jebbison, Moore, McBurnie etc…) we’d pack it in. It never ends well.

They say that a solid team is built from the defence up.

Isn't it weird how when the team is playing well the keeper's stats are good. Then when we have a comedy defence they get worse.

XGoT has nothing to do with how well the team is playing or how good the defence has been.

It literally is based on the quality of the shot.

It's the one thing you can measure keepers on regardless of the hiw the rest of the term is playing.

As I mentioned, Cooper is almost conceding double the amount of shots he should, based on the quality of shot.

I agree with your point and think there is a lot of 'head-burying' and 'cope' on this thread. This is because Cooper is an excellent keeper when fully fit. But the reason we could afford to buy Cooper was because he had two long term knee injuries (ACL & MCL).
He is now carrying a knee injury. His performance has noticeably been impacted.
I mentioned on another thread that not getting a decent back up keeper this summer was poor transfer dealing and an obvious weakness. It is needed because of Cooper's injury history, and we have only got bombscares Davo, Grbic and the unproven Faxon.

Y understand where you are coming from but I'm a bit old school and compound synthetic stats don't immediately convince me feel that my eyes are deceiving me. He has had some stinkers - they all have. I hope it's just a blip and not "his knees have gone"

Higher than expected. But 13 is not nearly double 8.67 .

Put it this way, he's 25/25 for goalkeepers used in the Championship this season in terms of +/- xGoT.
Yes. He's underperforming, not by the twice as many as you'd said, but definitely underperforming. There's certainly 3 he'd had saved previously.
Have we got a safer option? Is he the reason we are bottom? I don't think so.

A person in a wheelchair would have stopped this shot.

But a goalkeeper can't always know where the shooter will put his shot, so will often guess and go to one side in case it's a hard hit shot. On other occasions he'll wait.

In open play goalkeepers will normally wait and use their anticipation and reactions. Vitally, defenders will be of help, often shielding part of the goal, often putting the shooter off balance, or forced into a less ideal position to shoot from.

This season our defensive problems has meant shooters often have had unchallenged shooting opportunities, got into great positions to shoot from, and been able to whack it very hard, and/or pick a spot out of Cooper's range. On some other occasions, the finishes haven't been great, but still beat him as they haven't gone where he expected (like the Panenka) and therefore failed to readjust his body.

Looking at the goals we have conceded this season, do you think the XGoT stat takes the above into account?

Balls of steel, that guy. How cool to have a piece of brilliance named after you. And a bar.
