Was it a record

1/Have the blades ever made more changes from the starting 11 from last match of the season to the opening game = 7?

2/ Ever had more debuts on an opening game= 7?

3/ ever started a season with more academy players = 4?

All 3 together or as separate pointers?

Sad,
sorry Wad...
Apologies, these HP laptop keyboards can be so bad. Any chance you can go and "Google it", and then tell us the answer?
Just asking for a friend...
At the moment she is telling me she is topless on the beach in Ibiza and doesn't want to be on social...

The opening game of 2002/03 might have had a lot of changes too, as well as academy kids. Maybe not as many as yesterday, but still a lot to how the previous season ended.

First game of the 1965-66 season (we beat Villa 1-0) our line up had 8 players that joined us as a youth player

First game of the 1966-67 season (we lost 4-0 at Burnley) our line up had 9 players that joined us as a youth player

First game of the 1967-68 season (we lost 3-1 to Forest) our line up had 9 players that joined us as a youth player

Typical United, doing it on the cheap.

I don’t have the answers you’re looking for.

But what I will say is that you look at the team yesterday and the vibrancy and youth in there at fullback and in midfield and the opportunity for some of the youth lads on the bench and you realise that culling the ageing, big earners was absolutely the right decision.

It’s a new team and a new curve of development that is being started.

There really is little space for hanging onto the Norwoods and Osborns at the expense of Peck, Arblaster and Brooks for instance.

It’s not a comment driven by the result but by what you saw on the pitch, it was ruthless but absolutely the right decision. We are far better set to move forward now with hungry players that don’t have their better days behind them. Those that left served us well and I thank them but it was absolutely the right decision to move in this direction.

I agree that we needed to get rid of the deadwood, many of whom should have gone last summer or indeed the summer before, but let's not kid ourselves into thinking Marsh, Siriki and Peck are on the bench because they're good enough or ready. They're there at the moment because we literally have no one else. None stood out in pre-season, despite Marsh scoring. Seriki got the most minutes and best opportunity and he was average at best and often caught out of position. None looked ready for regular Championship football.

There is truth in that but if we are to be run sustainably which is admirable (though necessary) then there has to be a pathway for these lads.

Can’t help but feel seeing Peck at Rotherham made it easy not to aggressively pursue Dozzell, for example. We’re not at a point of foregoing key signings to accommodate the youngsters but marginal decisions like that are helpful for the club. I’d rather pay Peck and have money left over or have him head towards an improved deal than have a squad filler like Dozzell come on.
