Was that that the best first half performance ever?

Hard to think of one offhand. 3-0 at half time against Wednesday might be more noteworthy but it's hard to argue that the football was better.

I am struggling to think of a better 1st half performance in my 40 odd years of going to the lane, the fact that it was against a quality side, is even more noteworthy.

True. I can't remember anything better in many years. Our football was absolutely sublime, considering that Villa had quality (names) all over the pitch.

Only black spot? The ref. was fucking abysmal.

Funny listening to 'Wednesday Heaven' at the moment. They've obviously noticed that the Blades are in scintillating form (3rd in the table) and are pretending their recent form is similar to ours. We've just beaten Norwich, Bolton away and Villa. Goals for: 9 Goals conceded: 2. Obviously Jaoa, Bannan etc. are world beaters. Can't say I saw a queue yesterday wanting to sign any of their dross.
Wendy have just had one of those runs against cannon fodder. Millwall, Ipswich and Reading - none of which will be troubling the scorers next May.

Just texted similar to a mate. I go back to 1970 , struggling to think of a better 45 minutes performance in terms of quality and dominance.

No - Villa were poor.

The no 4 at right back was horrendous - Chester and jedinak very average.

McGinn and Whelan - out of their depth.

It's a good job Bolasie and Abraham weren't playing, but it's obvious they need both.

we might get 30 seconds on quest tonight we were that good.

I think our record stands at 53 seconds so far, and they squeezed three goals into that
Bound to be more this week because we were playing Villa

6 seconds of the ball hitting the net 4 times for us
20 seconds play prior to their consolation
And then 5 minutes discussing what's gone wrong at Villa

I completely disagree. I thought they were ok until the third goal went in, after that, they fell apart.

I would accept that they moved the ball about but with zero effectiveness and no real penetration. Bit like us 2nd half last season.

Games are won in midfield - Villa will be average playing Whelan and McGinn.

Thiery Henry might be their manager by Monday considering todays performance.

I said it was the best first half since we demolished Bradford in the promotion season.

The 3-0 first half against Wednesday we were pretty average. They just let us score every time we put the ball in the box.
Bradford game's a good shout. Today might edge it because of the opposition.

I've only been going to the lane for 24 years, so I know there are people on here who've seen a lot more football than me, but honestly the first half is the best I've ever seen from United. We would have given most prem teams a run for their money at least in those 45 mins. Outstanding football.

I think that the fact that their fans joined in H Blocks, 'your getting sacked in the morning', and started fighting amongst themselves just topped it off for me. The lane rarely rocks like that, outside of cup and promotion clinching games.

All generated by pure quality on the pitch.

Annoyingly I can't comment because it was a rare home match I missed, but being 4-0 up to Tottenham after 29 minutes in March 1993 must have been enjoyable.

Good call that one, but Spurs were more bothered about the cup semi a few days later, think Gazza got subbed early. Still a great game.

I was going to say, let Fulwood tell us of a better first half then because I can’t remember one since 1970 tbh. I still think Villa are a strong side but we wiped the floor with them. They showed, after they scored, what a capable team they are. They are no mugs and have some very good players. But they simply couldn’t live with us.

That was a battle of two of the best teams in this division, and as I remarked to my neighbours, if it had been a boxing match they’d have stopped it at half time!

Unfortunately I wasn't at today's match, but the best first half performance I saw was on 5th etember 1973.

This was the night when United were 4-0 up after 17 minutes, as Tony Currie, who scored twice, totally outshone World Cup winner Alan Ball. In his report, Radio Shfefield reporter Peter Cooper explained how United “destroyed” Arsenal and Currie “dismantled” Gunners defender Peter Storey.

This was also the night when, towards the end, Currie sat on the ball in front of Alan Ball, in revenge for Ball doing the same when Arsenal won 5-0 at the Lane a couple of years earlier. Cooper called Currie’s act “unnecessary, technically ungentlemanly – and magnificent”. The story goes that in fact the vanquished Ball, accepting that his team had been “destroyed”, and that Currie, in Cooper’s words, was on the night “something approaching greatness”, encouraged TC to do it. The showman that he was, Currie would not have needed a second invitation.
