The board did back him, but like with Wilder it's relative...our budget was second lowest in the league that season, just as Wilder's will be one of the lower Championship budgets.
Re: Nugent:
Just looked at the bid and it seems it was to be in instalments..I'm guessing dependent on our survival in the Prem...?!?!
This was posted above for the season's purchases:
£3m Davies
£2m Hulse
£500k Sommell
£500k Leigherwood
£200k Kazim-Richards
£2m Shelton
£1m Fathi
£6 million would have been a big chunk out of that.
What am I supposed to be looking at here? In neither of those articles are there any quotes from Neil Warnock.
You originally said that Warnock claimed he was "pipped to the job by Harry Redknapp". Where has he claimed that? Where is the quote?
A journalist speculates that the emergence of Warnock's name is a ploy to get a better contract with United.
But Mandaric confirms in a quote that Warnock is on his short list. Which suggests that it's not a ploy initiated by Warnock.
Maybe this is why you think that Warnock keeps changing his story?
Because you're reading a journalist's speculation and believing it be something that Warnock has said?
Luton Shelton and Fahti I shudder thinking back to those signings! I am sure he could have bought a striker in from the championship for 2/3m who would have done more than those 2.
Can anyone remember the stat about Warnock signing something like 92 strikers in his time here? Lest be honest with the amount of players he signed he had to pick one or two decent ones. I still say we were very fortunate in the end to get promotion that year, we were awful after Xmas and if memeory serves me right leeds had a midweek game in which they would have gone above us and it got called off. They then imploded and we limped over the line.

Oh good, it’s a revival of the old “limped over the line” myth.
We finished 9 points clear of Watford who finished 3rd.
We were promoted on the 15th April with 3 games still left to play.
Unbeaten in the last 8 games (4W, 4D). 90 points. +30 Goal difference.
Would have been good enough to win the league in 6 of the last 13 seasons.
No myth at all it had a lot to do with what other teams did rather than what we did. After xmas we were very inconsistent, I didn’t miss a game that season home or away and believe me you could see how nervy we were and Warnock started the defensive mindset in the second half of the season.
So all of these differing stories are made up to damage Warnock some years in the future when good old Neil says something different? It's like a muddled Terminator plot line.
Why would a journalist speculate such a thing?
Does today's Guardian quote Warnock about being knocked for six? Does the last one I posted quote him as saying it wasn't about money?
You could always hunt around for information yourself you know.

I believe Warnock when he says he was upset about not being offered a pay rise after promotion in May 2006.
I would have been upset too. He had earned the club a fortune by getting promoted and deserved a fair share of some of that.
Despite being "knocked for six" by the poor contract offered, he stayed with United as he wanted to stay and it was his dream job.
He no doubt believed in himself and his team and wanted to have a good crack at keeping us in The Premiership.
I don't for one minute believe that he "lost interest" in doing the job at that point.
The article you posted was quoting him 12 months later after relegation in May 2007, when it was mutually agreed he would leave the club.
I also believe Warnock when he says that it wasn't about the money by that stage and that isn't why he ultimately left.
You are conflating two different events that happened 12 months apart and accusing Warnock of lying because you can't see that it's two totally different situations.
Results after Xmas. P22, W10, D7, L5. Points 37. Average 1.68 or 77 points if extrapolated over the whole season.
That's a quick limp.
Do you really beleave he wasn't rewarded for taking us up to the premiership ,I can't !!Sounds like a plausible theory to me.
Why should Warnock not be upset that he didn't get a pay rise from United after promotion to The Premiership?
How much did United gain financially from promotion and the TV money and the increased attendances?
Would it have been unreasonable for them to reward the manager who gained promotion with a pay rise?
Are people angry with Warnock for being upset about it?
Or angry that the "not a proper Blade" stayed despite United's failure to reward him?
Why is he the bad guy in this situation?
In my opinion, getting the 0-0 at Man City away in October did us for the season; after getting well beaten in our away games previously and looking like we might be starting to get cast adrift slightly it vindicated the 4-5-1 in Colin’s mind and we never shifted from it. If we received another beating that day he may have changed it and gone slightly more attacking.
Or just take the last say, two months and ignore the 15 points from Boxing Day to 31st Jan?
I didn't choose that time frame. The person who I replied to twice referred to our poor form "after Xmas".
The truth is that we started brilliantly, had one very poor spell (25th Feb to 18th March - D1 L3) then finished fairly strongly.
We didn't "limp over the line" as I think you've already agreed.
..................Regards our managers honesty goes along way
Bassett- at the time I’d never known us have a manager as honest. When we were poor he was angry and admitted we were poor. I remember him once saying if he was a fan paying to watch that he’d want a refund. He used to talk about giving 100% for the club and acted like a fan, many similarities to Wilder.
Warnock: Spoke really well when we won often taking credit for his tactics but when we lost he always looked to blame anything, the pitch, the ref, the cheating opposition. Sore loser and I can’t remenber him ever taking the blame for his own bad tactics.
Robson: his post match comments used to really depress me because they were the same every single match and had no relation to the match that we’d just played. It felt like he’d lost the plot.
Wilson: won me over as a decent bloke, always honest but seemed to be a worrier and gave the opposition too much respect.
Clough- always seem self assured and possibly arrogant. Even when we were poor he always highlighted the positives making it sound like we were making progress. His tactics were over cautious.
Adkins- loved his initial upbeat positivity then even after some terrible performances he still gave the same really positive post match interviews began to think that like Robson he might be losing the plot, sometimes his interviews had no relation to the match I’d just seen.
Wilder- it’s like having Bassett back in charge as we have our club back. Wilder is very honest, he says it as it is, he’s maybe too honest but even if he fails here like Bassett he’ll always be highly thought of in my eyes.
Danny it’s clear to see you obviously like Warnock probably because he is the darling of the media, but can you also see why the majority of fans disliked him? Even when he got us up there wasn’t a great amount of affection for him. The things he usd to say made me cringe, let’s be fair he dined out on the triple assault season for years but that season was ultimately a failure.
Once again in the play off game I would question his tactics in a big game.
That’s exactly how I see it. Trying to get some more loot before either (a) an unexpected failure to get promoted (b) getting spanked next year.Well, in light of this ....
...... it’s certainly starting to look like a concerted campaign, isn’t it ?
3-3 draw at Bury in 1998-99 season. After the match both Warnock and McCabe were interviewed for Sky Sports and then in front of the cameras McCabe presented a Blade tie to WarnockHe turned up at BDTBL in a United tie when he managed Bury. We played them in a televised game if memory serves me correctly. I thought at the time that it was a bit of a twattish thing to do.

this^^ a thing of beauty thisWarnock does many things well, but he has absolutely no idea how to build a forward line and he wouldn't know a 20 goal a seaso. Striker if one came up to him and punched him in the face. His promoted teams tend to have 3 or 4 players with around 10 goals: we did and Cardiff do. None of these guys score regularly in the PL, which is why he has problems.
2004-5 was a Warnock masterclass in how not to build a forward line.
i thought he decided to leave because Sean Bean got a bit hammered and threatened to knock him out"Warnock was rumoured to have been unhappy with a new contract offer he was made prior to Sunday's defeat at Wigan, in which his salary would drop significantly if the club were relegated, though Sheffield United chairman Kevin McCabe today insisted there had been no formal offer.
Either way Warnock insisted money had not been a factor in his departure."
Where's "at that stage"? Do you know something no one else does.
Bit much telling me I'm mixed up when you include the comment "at that stage" it not being about the money. They're your words - funnily enough opinions of various journalists at the time aren't to be believed but yours, and yours alone, claims are - are they stated anywhere else?
It was about money. He himself confirmed that today. He thought he was entitled to claim from West Ham after McCabe had reached agreement with him for Gilids sake.
But that day he decided to leave* , err, it wasn't about money? Come on.
*
He's claimed he left by mutual consent, decided to leave himself etc. Firstly, he had no contract after 30th June 2007 I believe and therefore no job. ( Pinchy s legal opinion l think is that he was effectively sacked. ). Not much mutual agreement when there's no new contract offer on the table and therefore no job after 30/6/2007.
Money motivated man becomes unmotivated to suit argument pretty much sums up your claim.
Loved Warnock when he was here and some of my favourite seasons as a Blade were with him in charge. Full of admiration for the amazing job he did at Rotherham and is doing at Cardiff.
Totally aware that he's self-centred and will say whatever suits him at the time.
Think it's possible to recognise his flaws and also believe he did a great job at Bramall Lane.
Sticks in the throat a little when bitter ex-Blades like Jamie Hoyland are saying things like 'I can never understand how Blades fans can hold his teams in the same regard as Harry's'. Both teams had heroes in them - Deane, Agana, Hodges, Jagielka, Tonge, Brown - and I don't see why we have to choose one or the other. Not a list Hoyland will ever find himself on.
Loved Warnock when he was here and I see a load of bollox being said about how he was properly backed by the board when we went up. My recollection was that out biggest signing that season was Paul Ifill 800 Grand so hardly mega bucks!!
