Gary Speed played a big part in the revival of Wales. He showed with us what an exemplary professional he was. Except for the England game, I hope Wales have a good tournament starting with today's game against Slovakia.

Do it for Gary.

Speed set the wheels in motion for Wales and deserves a huge amount of credit for what they've done.

Blades Welsh XI:

Rees

Cotterill Hockey Speed Hodges
Saunders Blake

Bit thin on the defensive front?

James Thomas who we had on loan and scored the winning goal against Preston in around 2000.

While we're on the subject of Speedo, I reckon we would've stayed up or at least had a better chance of staying up as we were performing better and coming closer to getting results, I think its testament to how good a manager he was going to be as the bulk of players we had that season were really poor. I suppose you can't blame him for going on to manage his nation though, for me its one of a number of unfortunate factors (or typical Blades luck if you like) that had led to our even further decline, I think he may have just about stopped it somehow.

R.I.P. Speedo, never forgotten.

Didn't Mick Hill play for Wales? He was a really nice lad and I believe may have died relatively young (Fifties?) like Mel Rees and Gary Speed.

He had a job getting in the United team never mind playing for his country.

think its more to do with Gareth Bale being one of the worlds top 10 players
lifted the whole team

Agreed, it was a tragedy for Speed's family what happened but let's not turn him into some sort of legend.
Very good footballer yes, very good manager? ... he didn't live long enough for anyone to decide.

According to Wiki ~

In 1971, Hill played twice for Wales, against Czechoslovakia and Romaniain the UEFA European Football Championship qualifying competition.

Hill died on 23 June 2008, aged 60[3]Mick Mills, his captain at Ipswich, paid this tribute: "Mick was an exceptionally nice lad who everyone liked. He was a decent player with a good touch, but suffered somewhat for taking his off-field approach for life on to the park."
