Just read that Lambert isn't that bothered with the FA cup. It's all about the Premier League, points and of course the money.

I know that this is the way football is nowadays but I've always enjoyed the FA cup (from 3rd round onwards) . I personally think that this is what is wrong with football. The FA has allowed the Premier League to be such a horrible money spinner that real football is pushed aside.

It'd be great to cause an upset infront of 5,500 Blades fans and at a ground where we've had little success in the past.

Well we knocked em out of the youth cup semi,so lets do it in the big cup.

Am i remebering the past correctly.
Did Warnock made a similar comment about the FA Cup when we were about to play Swansea,(when they were minnows) they brought about 5000 fans to the Lane and beat us 3-0.

Good, I hope he tells his players that because ours will be right up for it and so will the manager. He's a Clough and Cloughs are winners. Some Premier League managers should take a page out of that book. That was the main thing I liked about Danny Wilson.....whatever competition we were playing in he wanted to win and put a side out to do just that.

The FA Cup is still a great competition even if some of the elite devalue it. I find it disgusting to be honest. It's part of the fabric of English football, it's heritage and history. It should be treated with the utmost respect.

I still can't see anything better than honourable (hopefully) defeat, remember two seasons ago when we were flying and drew Birmingham at home? They turned us over big style, the big difference being pace and power something we are lacking even more this season.

All Saturday will serve to do is remind me of the end of the 06/07 season and our third penalty against Huddersfield.

Thoroughly depressing.

No bigger graveyard for United than Villa Park, we've lost 42 games there.

Haven't won there for 48 years.

I fear the worst.

Wasn't the last time the 0-3 smashing when NW played 5-4-1, the week before Wigan?

A trophy for Nigel to win? The only domestic trophy his dad didnt win (he won Watney Cup, League Cup, League Championship, Mickey Mouse trophies in the late 1980s (forgot who were the sponsors at the time Forest won them) plus European Cup but never the FA Cup)

I'm sure I heard it right and when asked what's the most important thing Lambert said "a long contract".

Same on him, what about all those Villa fans who basically can fuck off, not bothered about you lot winning owt, I've got mesen a load of lolly.

Perhaps we should present him with a large brown envelope before kick off instead of the hand shakes?

Also Lambert wins the 'TWAT' thread all to himself.

I suspect Lambert is trying to reduce the pressure on himself put on him by the fans, they've struggled at home and a defeat by us would be the ultimate embarassment after they called for his head last week. So if they lose now, it's almost like that's part of the plan, but a win would be a bonus. Sounds like a desperate man.

It was. A cowardly, abject surrender by a manager out of his depth and a shameful non-participation by a team caught like rabbits in the headlights.

It was the day that set the scene for the next game, and many of us left Villa Park with a sinking feeling.

As for the demise of the Cup, it's fate was sealed when that despicable, arrogant bunch of twats, Manchester United, were allowed to opt out.

And they got away with it. Just like they got away with the 'we fielded our best team' shit against Wet Sham.

I'm heartened, to say the least to see Manchester United now struggling to sustain the glory years of old (and their disgruntled 'fans' tasting disappointment and defeat) and West Ham United facing the overdue destiny of relegation.

Wankers. All of them.

We played 4-5-1 at Villa and 4-4-2 vs Wigan.

He was asked the question and he just answered it honestly, Reading the bbc article I wouldn't say he isn't be arsed about the cup. "Cup competitions, if you can get through, then absolutely I want to get through. I don't want to not get through but your main one is the league" something a lot of mangers I'm sure do agree especially the lower placed prem teams.
All a bit bit bog standard stuff tbh

Its a shame but thats modern top flight football.

Most Premiership fans cant be arsed with the FA cup either i suspect.

All this is to me is a day out. If i'm blatantly honest I expected even a Villa 2nd string to have enough talent to turn us over but and a big but at that, shocks do happen in the FA Cup that is what makes it special. Who knows this team could go down there and frustrate them and knick it.

I really hope we win but I won't get my hopes up I will just enjoy it for what it is.

Maybe. Easy in retrospect, but 4-5-1 had worked on occasions that season, so it wasn't beyond the realm of probability that it could lead to a scrappy point. It was also more importantly the 11 players on the pitch that had performed so well in the 2nd half at Charlton. And to be honest the sinking feeling happened before kickoff as fans at the game (and I would imagine the players in the changing room) followed the earlier kickoff in the Fulham-Liverpool game where Fulham scraped a freak result against a severely weakened Liverpool team.

That, coupled with the fact it was a party atmosphere for Villa's fans and team, made it always a tough game tbh. I'd argue not winning by a wider margin at home to Watford was the greater tactical blunder of the two. Had we done that, a damaging away result wouldn't have been quite so devastating.

We should put out our best side and see what happens.

Like someone said elsewhere its a good test for our current crop of players. We expect to be turned over and have nothing to fear. They have a fair bit to fear as they are struggling to win at home and not far off the relegation zone in the league.

If we lose who cares but if they lose its squeaky bum time for Lambert.

United managed a total of one point playing 4-5-1 away - in the 0-0 draw against Man City. All of our other away points were won with 2 up front.

Lambert tells a different story on the Villa OS.

"The FA Cup is something you want to progress in.
"We want to get to the next round. We will try and get through.
"We are at home which is good.
"I never take games like this lightly. You have to earn the right.
"I know Nigel has not been long in at Bramall Lane. But it will be a tough game.
"There will no pressure on them at all. They will go out and play.
"We have to be right on it to get through.
"Nigel did well at Derby but he's at a different club now. It will be a tough match, no doubt.
"But if we play the way we did against Sunderland, hopefully we will go through. That win will certainly give us more confidence than we would have had.
"I thought we were excellent in the way we played at the Stadium of Light and I thought we should have won by more, with the chances we had.
"On the counter attack, I thought we were excellent. We thoroughly deserved to win the game.
"In this one, Sheff Utd will raise their game. Our stadium will be new to their lads. We will try and play our normal game and get through."
On the non-stop league programme, he added: "It's been relentless, physically and mentally. It's been really, really tough.
"The lads are fine. They know it's like that in the festive period. You have to come through the games.
"We will have a cup match now and then a bit of a break until the Arsenal game.
"The cup competition gives you that respite.
"In the back of the mind, you also know you've got a massive game a week on Monday. That's why the Sunderland game was vital to try to win.
"If I do leave some lads out due to a rest, they will be fresh for the Arsenal game.
"There's two ways to look at it. You put everyone in again and you then get injuries. We haven't got a big enough squad to do it.
"Some lads need games and we have a difficult match against Arsenal upcoming too the following Monday."

Think he's covered all corners there to try and satisfy most of his fans :-)

And at home? Fairly sure I saw us win at least once with that formation - with Webber surprisingly in an advanced midfield role.

Not convinced 4-4-2 would have made the slightest bit of difference that day.

Going with no expectations at all.
Luck in the Cup is something that happens to other clubs.
Rare that we ever upset the natural order of things. I don't treat a win away at Bolton as a giant killing act.

Villa do their best work as a counter attacking side where they can soak up pressure and break with pace. That's why they picked up results at Arse, S'hampton and Sunlan. At home they really struggle to break down a resolute defence. So, expect it will be similar to Brum 2 seasons ago and they will score with every shot on target in the match :o.

Be great to be part of a 5k plus away following again, though. :D

Not sure Clough will see this match as his number 1 priority either.

If Baxter's carrying a slight knock, should we risk him in this game or make sure he's right for Notts County?

You know I almost feel the same as Lambert, the FA only have themselves to blame, they have systematically chopped the legs off their oldest competition over the last 20 years, First off they scrapped 2nd and 3rd replays and brought in the lottery of Penalties, then the scrapped the final and semi final replays completely then they pressurised the then holders Man U to pull out of the competition to take part in a farce of a World Cup club competition. And recently they have buried the competition away on ESPN BT Sport and scraps for the awful ITV coverage.

I saw a WM police tweet earlier saying they were expecting 25k including 6k Blades. A full stadium would have been nice but beggars can't be choosers
