Skysports.com understands former Liverpool full-back Gregory Vignal is training with Sheffield United in the hope of securing a permanent move.

The French left-back is currently without a club after Birmingham boss Alex McLeish released him at the end of last season.

Vignal, 28, was plagued with injuries last term and was restricted to just nine first-team appearances for the Blues during his one-year stay.

His Premier League experience has attracted interest from Blades boss Kevin Blackwell, and he will look at the Frenchman closely in training over the coming days.

Struggle
Vignal made his name at Liverpool after arriving at Anfield from hometown club Montpellier for £500,000 back in 2000.

He found first-team appearances hard to come by under former Reds boss Gerard Houllier though, and was loaned out to a number of European clubs - including Rangers - before moving to Portsmouth at the start of the 2005 campaign.

Once again he struggled to break into the first-team and he joined RC Lens on a free transfer the following season.

Further loan spells at Kaiserslautern and Southampton followed before McLeish signed him on a one-year deal at the start of last season.

Vignal could be the second full-back to sign at Bramall Lane in a matter of days after Rob Kozluk re-joined the club last week.

Looks Too Much Like Lady Parts to Me

So replace one injury prone veteran Left Back with another?

Not that impressed if true since we are likely to see him a couple of times before we give him a permanent bed in sick bay.

Besides, his name looks too much like lady parts to be a footballer.
Imagine if they got his name wrong on the replica shirts.
Anyone buying one would look like a propper c**t.

He was only injured last season and at 28 isn't a veteran.

Definately worth looking at.

He's had far too many clubs in Europe's top divisions to have nothing about him.

Get him fit and injury free and we've got ourselves a very good left back.
A top wealth of experience so well worth looking at IMO.

This would be a positive signing in my opinion; i haven't seen much of him but the fact that he has played for some very good clubs suggests that he is a very capable player.

Very capable player? possibly but seriously injury prone? and 28 ? ehem... older more injury prone ? doesnt sound the best of ideas to me, but then again by the looks already one player out and still paying his wages, why not two :)?

Im sure we will be running exstensive fitness tests with him, we dont just sign injured players the hell of it. And since when is 28 old for a footballer, arent most of them at their peak around that age? What happened with Walton is nothing but unfortunate, we need a left back, weve no money, and he's played for liverpool, pompy, birmingham and also in france and germany. got to be worth a look at least.

I take your point that he has had a few injuries in his career but there aren't many players who haven't faced a few months out with injury by the time they reach their late twenties.

If we are indeed dealing exclusively in free transfers this season, i would say that a player who has played for the likes of Rangers, Liverpool, Birmingham and espanyol could potentially be a cracking it of business.

I would certainly be more enthused then i was by the signing of Rob Kozluk.

It seemed that way when we signed France ;)

Weds pulled out because of his results in his medical.

I think that was more of a face-saving excuse, im pretty sure the real reason was he offer him double his pay and an extra year (however ill-advised) and are a club who had better prospects.

As for Vignal - if he proves his fitness and talent then we'll sign him and hopefully he'll be good, its apparent he has something or else so many big clubs wouldn't have taken a punt and its obvious he's been unfortunate with injuries or else we wouldn't be getting a sniff lol.

It was France who said he wasn't offered a contract.

A hazy memory of this but I seem to remember it was something like Wednesday told France that they were unable to offer him a contract as they were absolutely skint to the bone. Why bother taking players on trial if you're unable to offer them a deal? That was life under Straffo!

Thought they said none of the 3 trialists, (Vignal, Gilbert & Logan) were being retained................

Maybe we liked Vignal but felt that Bruce was the better option. But if Bruce isn't coming because Keane has discovered he loves him after all, then Vignal is a decent and available alternative..?

So a right sided centre half and a left back were the options for this spot? What was the question again...
