Some diametrically opposing views on our players. How strangely far apart some of them are.

watched parts of the game, the finns more or less outplayed the home team, Ireland completely out of ideas.

Read through the first 20 or so comments. How can Stevens and Egan suddenly look incompetent in a Championship(?) standard team whilst they look very capable at Premiership? Is it them, the fans' perception, the players around them, the manager's instructions, what? I don't get it.
(Going off the comments I didn't watch the game)

Didn't view the game but out of our 2 wing backs Stevens position in our side is the most vulnerable to Lowe than George's is to Bogle.

Watched the last 20 minutes. Playing in a 4 didn't suit Stevens or Doherty, mostly left isolated without a forward runner. Stevens looks so different and much more dynamic when he has options from JOC and Fleck/Osborne. Ireland played like they were strangers, no wonder Wilder made his comment about the International experience being no good for our lads.

I watched the game. Seems like another team that wants better than Mick McCarthy and ends up being shitter to me.

Our players wise, McGoldrick was Ireland's best player by a mile and he played a quarter of the game and hasn't kicked a ball in a match setting this season so far. Was free in the six yard box and was ignored, had a poor shot (felt ripper) but wasn't given enough time to affect the game imo.

Enda was desperate for the build up to go up the wing but Connelly (mardy, thinks he's Aguero, ball hog) wasn't having it. He got into good positions constantly only to be ignored and it switched to the other side where Doherty was making Spurs fans shit themselves with a second inept display in a week.

Egan, great tackle on Pukki, steady. Probably would've scored had Shane Duffy not gone "nah lads, feck off all the corners are coming to me, I'm captain"

Robinson, proved his 'not a striker' credentials again, leans backwards constantly! Played one good ball with the outside of his foot, will look great in the highlights. Continued to nesh out of 50/50s which is still infuriating.

Ireland's midfield is absolutely tragic, Brady looked pissed, awful touch, awful passing, awful reading of the game. Arter is pointless and neither him nor Brady play that regularly due to being crocks and Molumby, well it was his first start so you can forgive him a bit.

Idah is poor for me. They said he'd been looking at Pukki for inspiration, well he was looking at the second half of the season Pukki who didn't score and didn't cause any troubles for most defences.

They need to look at what they have, which is 2 quality wingbacks and a weak middle. Play 5 at the back with wingbacks, play 2 midfielders, Didzy as a 10, and let Connolly be a striker with someone else, then he won't be as mardy about having to come out on the wing.

Haven't missed Robinson's half arsed pressing but the thing that stood out for me was enda playing a forward pass but not following it for the return
Looked like he'd been told not to.go over the half way line which effectively makes him an extra centre back

You can say that about anyone playing internationals. The answer is easy; international football is dreadful. A lowering of standards all round.

Hysterical to me that pundits (such as Glenn Hoddle) still routinely refer to it "stepping up to this level" as if it was the pinnacle of football achievement like it was up to the 70s, whereas in reality most matches are more like Walsall v Wednesday.

Nobody looks any good and that's why I don't bother with it.

As a general observation on this round of games, the odds of all these footballers putting in compelling performances immediately after returning from their Mediterranean jollies seem slim to none. I expect an awful lot of league games will look pretty dreadful next week too.

Having taken in much of the Irish games, the England dirge, and our neighbours’ triumphant trip to Walsall, my enthusiasm for the new season could be described as flaccid...

I like to see Ireland do well but they're currently shite

I watched the game and they weren’t wrong. It shows you how our system suits the players. Today Stevens looked very championship. For us he is fantastic. Same can be said for Doherty who I rate as the best wing back in the league.

Egan the same along side Duffy he looked a shadow of himself and looked like the player Brentford sold too us. The formation really does help him.

Think a lot of scouts must watch our players and question what they would be like in other systems etc.

“Stevens stops and passes back” That is the player I recognise from the second half of last season and not the first.

Ireland play a completely different formation to what our players are used to week in week out, it’s no surprise a few struggle to adapt.

I'm leaving the tap-in to others but I also think many of us feel the same about the coming season.
