I can only presume the Villa fan (and i've seen a few comments like his) didn't go to either of the Villa Blades games because for 170 mins we absolutely pummelled them. The first half at home was as good a footballing lesson as I've seen.

I thought I'd never see us play a better half of football than Villa at home last season.

However, they don't have this squad of players, this manager....and a lot in their second season get complacent and buy a fuckton of foreign mercenaries.

Spot on that. The biggest problem teams make in their second season is replacing too many players in the summer. When you bring in 5-6 replacements you're starting from zero, as they don't know the system, their team mates etc. All it takes is a few early bad results and heads drop, confidence goes and relegation beckons.

Other than his first season, Wilder has never made wholesale changes every season and we've reaped the benefits.

He won't splash the cash unless he feels a player really does bring something to us.

Mousset has surely got to be one of his greatest signings, and Wilder has one hell of a list to choose from.

It is a myth. Look at Burnley, Watford, Wolves and Bournemouth and in earlier years Swansea, Stoke and West Brom. The only side I can think of who had a great first season then dropped are Reading under Coppell. People talk about Hull but they finished 4th bottom. We might finish 4th bottom and next season struggle but that would be expected. If we finish top half, nothing backs up the idea we would struggle the season after.

I think Ipswich might have done it when they were last in the premier League.

Might be wrong, but I think they got into Europe in their first season, then got relegated in their second season.

Agree with this. Very lazy.

For every promoted team that suffers with "second season syndrome" like Hull, Huddersfield and Ipswich for example, there's probably a number of examples of promoted teams going from strength to strength, e.g. Burnley, Stoke, Leicester, Southampton, West Ham and Bournemouth just recently.

The odds, I would guess, suggest that United - should they maintain this and finish top half - would do the same again the following year. And, considering what we all know about Wilder and the way he continually improves us, we'd probably do better. If I were a betting man, I'd expect us to finish higher in 20/21 than we do in 19/20. Wilder is the key behind all of it.

Some real gallows humour on that forum especially with their team struggling so badly in league 1.
When they’ve had 6 consecutive years in league 1 (like us) then I’ll start feeling sorry for them.

Rich coming from a Villa fan. he really can't have seen us last season.In 170 out of the 180 minutes we played against Villa we played our best football of the entire season!

You can add to all these neutral fans expressions of shock and surprise the views of the majority of Blades fans. I can forgive the neutrals as they have not had the advantage of watching us week in week out since Wilder took over, but Blades fans have no such excuse - shame on you pessimists; you should know better. One of the worst is Deadbat, whose ability to sum up a football match leaves me stunned with admiration. Me - I'm just an optimistic Blade whose watched more than enough football at BDTBL over so many years now I think I've developed an objective sense of how good or bad we are relative to standards prevailing in whatever League we compete in.
Happy as I've ever been right now - will be even happier if CW signs another Moose in January though....

Ipswich finished 5th in 2001 and qualified for the UEFA cup, which may well be the highest ever finish since football began*. It went so well for them, that they were relegated the following season!
