It is a myth. Look at Burnley, Watford, Wolves and Bournemouth and in earlier years Swansea, Stoke and West Brom. The only side I can think of who had a great first season then dropped are Reading under Coppell. People talk about Hull but they finished 4th bottom. We might finish 4th bottom and next season struggle but that would be expected. If we finish top half, nothing backs up the idea we would struggle the season after.
Huddersfield ?

I like how the Bournemouth fans are trying to get some credit for moose and what's that wolves fan on about? We didn't create many chances in first half? We had 5 shots on target in the first 25 minutes!

Thank you oh great one for giving me more sensations of joy and happiness

Things I never thought I’d write..

I am definitely warming to Liverpool fans.

They have been almost uniformly
complementary since we played them.

Amazing isn't it. I've been watching United for over 40 years and I can't ever remember a team or manager who had been given such plaudits.
It really is a pleasure to read and listen to experts now saying how well we are doing. Little old Sheffield United......
I hope that Wilder stays with us and builds something truly magnificent here. For so long we've been in the shadow of Leeds and that other Sheffield team and it would be so good for United to now imerge as a force in the Premiership.
May this Wilder and Knill partnership remain for a long time yet.

Don't bother renewing your season tickets because we're going down next season lads. Apparently.

Brilliant Roy

Emotion is a wonderful thing. I think I'm going to cry after reading that.

“He probably tells them they were brilliant when they were brilliant and tells them they were shit when they were shit. Doesn’t hide behind press officer or try to con the fans. It’s how it used to be.”

It's how it is with Sheffield United with Wilder in charge.

What is more ridiculous about the "2nd season syndrome" comments are they are only being said by fans of clubs who have fairly recently come up. Palace, West Ham, Bournemouth etc. All clubs who have been promoted in the last decade and not gone down after the 2nd season so it's strange why they think we will be any different to them.

well at least the excuses have changed for the Sheffield United view from bingo. we have two new entries
1. Hull were this high up and went down (Hull DIDN'T go down that season)
2. Next season they will go down

unbelievable Jeff.

Interesting that the Villa fan reckons he “didn’t think they were anything special at all last year”, and yet we played his lot off the park home and away.

And Grealish said we were the best team they had played

Merci beaucoup Monsieur Roy

Tres bon apart from the Brighton weirdo

Norwich Fan

” They berate everyone for time wasting yet do it so much themselves and now it’s cost them “

No - we just berate you lot for time wasting because you took it to an embarrassing new level - thundercunts.
we learned from the best. thanks Norwich :)

This is bonkers ....never in my lifetime have we had such adulation! Loving it, I must say all the Mancs I work with (IK live in manchester) are mightily impressed, and yes they do call us Sheffield as everyone here under 30 doesnt know the other lot exist! Happy days!

If you look at Roy’s views from in our first season in the championship they said the only reason we were doing well was momentum, it often annoyed me as it was clear then that other teams fans and pundits had no idea. Roy’s views from at the start of year 2 were that we were relegation fodder as everyone had worked us out, pig fan’s laughingly scraping the barrel with this one. As year 2 progressed we would fade due to suspensions etc but as a squad showed with key absentees we slotted others in those positions. Year 3 starts we were going to be battered every week and our style of play is ‘rubbish’ and then we had everything is new so we are up for it and that’s why we have been getting some results. Remarkably now they’ve started to talk about how we will be relegated next season (as a long suffering blade amongst many others I can’t convince myself we will be safe yet this season irrespective of how we are playing).
So what does it tell me? Those that think they can tell the future ought to run off with the fair and read tea leaves. What was interesting is that last season when Wilder was reminded about how we always end up messing it up he seemed very annoyed and had the facial expression where he seems to scrunch his eyes up at the reporter and damage them physically and he said we are no longer the old United. It is for this reason I have started to expunge pre Wilder and now call his arrival Year 0.

Must have been them lucky 7goals that trickled past their keeper😋

Mate you need to put this behind a paywall, cos this is the best stuff. The Roythletic.

Lazy thinking this second season syndrome, though it does have some legs and has happened with a fair few clubs in the past.

However, they don't have this squad of players, this manager....and a lot in their second season get complacent and buy a fuckton of foreign mercenaries.

I thought we might get complacent in our second season in the championship but Wilder strengthened in key areas and made the squad better than it was the season before. The fact we lost Brooks plus the likes of Clarke, Stearman and Coutts could barely get back into the team showed how much we took a step forward.
