Posh Blade here!

Better late than never, sorry I didn’t get a pre-view thread up, had typed a mammoth one up but couldn’t get modded on here soon enough and forgot my bladesmad password so, largely my bad.

I was of course there yesterday, fate that this fixture fell 9 years to the weekend that I moved to sheff to start Uni and on the day the students returned........and the day before my birthday! Yes I know......didn’t get the 3 points present etc.........

Got in the ground pretty early, the fact Gary Sinclair chose to play ‘Don’t let me down’ was more than apt, and the message was taken on board by both teams over 90 mins so zero complaints from me.

1st half:

United started the better side as McGee clawed the ball over from behind him! I was just as amazed as Done himself was to be fair, class save! Sharp was the architect for the move that broke the deadlock and it could only be DONE that finished it off. It was a deserved lead based on the opening exchanges and the cheer from the crowd was louder than I remember from the away end in games past.

I knew Posh were still very much in the game and sure enough the eventual man of the match was forced into action as (what looked like) a poor touch from Taylor led to him having to scrap and turn only for Moore to be equal to his shot. Moore would again win the duel with Taylor as a disguised shot was palmed away- will have to ask anyone in the kop but from comments I’ve read after the game it sounds like both were both very good goal-preventing saves.

I felt as the half went on it was a theme of us really giving a good account of ourselves and looking like a good side while United played the pressing game brilliantly and did very well to restrict us, the fact it took some very good play and intricate football to get into decent positions is a real credit to United’s first half performance at 1-0.

We had one very good moment where Maddison got in behind but nobody got on the end of a cross which looked like it only needed a touch- that kinda sums up our problem at the moment, we have nobody to get in the box and finish those chances, that was a key difference- Done did that for united twice but was once denied by GK heroics.

At HT I felt 1-1 would have been a good reflection and consensus was we had played well and were unfortunate to be behind but United had got the hard work done early and had managed the game ver y well, my line being that against pretty much any other team at this level we would have broken through at some point and scored.

2nd Half:

Scougall’s introduction inspired another strong start from United as Duffy was surely only inches away from making it 2-0 and McGee once again had to adjust his position to deny Scougall. Posh again struggled to get going and were overran in the midfield. It has to be said despite posh having more possession, United’s retention of it was better.

As with the first half though, we woke up and began to look the more likely to score, Maddison fired wide after Moore had superbly rushed out to beat him to a through ball, had MM been any quicker that would have been a goal or a penalty.

Posh made 3 subs 2 of which combined to produce posh’s clearest chance of the game. Debutant moore found himself out wide and delivered a superb ball in towards Edwards who looked a cert to score what has become his trademark goal, he could only instinctively just smash it goalwards but Moore somehow got himself in the way of the shot and denied what would at that point have been a deserved equaliser.

Bostwick fired narrowly wide but from then on United saw the game out brilliantly and could have made it 2-0 on the break. The home crowd were behind their side and I heard the kop quite a few times despite plenty of background noise amognst a 1000 strong away following and any noise from the kop really doesn’t travel well when the away end is full- I can say that from experience.

United:

Wilder has definitely erased the malaise of the last two seasons, whilst it was a very even game over the 90, Blades managed and maintained the lead where previous sides would have crumbled and probably lost, and to be honest that’s probably the best I’ve seen Posh play at the lane- genuinely! The fact nobody is moaning about our performance speaks volumes. Scougall probs my man of the match, Done was a menace 1st half and all of the rearguard were exemplary as well. Granted the narrow pitch suited United’s tactics and setup at 1-0 but the ability to execute it was what mattered and delivered the 3 points. It could have ended 2-0 and it wouldn’t have flattered United that much as the game felt very end to end 2nd half with United dominating the latter stages, that was the only thing that disappointed me from a Posh perspective.

Posh:

Felt we played well and looked a very good side at times, particularly the last 15 mins of the 1st half and a 10 minute spell n the 2nd half, that would have been enough to put 2/3 past a lot of sides in this league and the fact we were held to a clean sheet seems to have really encouraged everyone at the lane. Bradford are the only other side to have managed that and in fairness we were dire that game, easily our worst performance so far. Moncur was our best player, his link up play was superb and when he and Maddison (no 11) started to find each other towards the end of the first half we really looked dangerous and I sensed the home crowd began to get nervous. Smith (no2) had a solid game as did Lopes, he is only 17 and whilst he had a mare coming on as a sub last week, he ran it at MK dons and had some real moments of skill and composure. Binnom-Williams was the only player I’d question and he was only playing because Hughes was suspended. Forrester (no 8) was his usual self, Taylor (no 10) still looked rusty. I thought chettle (no 23) made a good impact from the bench and Moore (the 17 year old striker we brought on) coped ok and didn’t look out of place albeit slightly raw.

Crowd/atmos:

Decent. I predicted 21,500 but I was maybe a tad optimistic, was disappointed we didn’t break 1000 given we took 1400 last season during dire weather. The atmos was an improvement on previous Blades vs Posh games at the lane. I heard ‘united, united, united’ chants off the kop quite a few times as well as ‘oh when the blades go marching in’, the anthem was a bit quiet but towards the end the crowd defo played a part. Our lot were pretty quiet aside from that spell in the 2nd half, I saw red when some sang ‘you’re just a *** Sheffield Wednesday’ Sorry if anyone was offended by that if it was heard- we’re all posh southern/east midlands ****s to you anyway I guess!!!!!!!

Ref:

He was weird, did well 1st half, 2nd half he randomly decided to bring the cards out for the exact same fouls he’d kept them in his pocket for earlier. There was one foul on maddison which on another day could have been a red, can’t remember who made it, granted MM is a <insert expletive> when it comes to the dark arts but that was a genuinely bad tackle.

5 occasions later and walking through the main stand car park or down shoreham street and John street with a posh shirt on still doesn’t feel quite right.........dunno why, just will always feel weird for me.

Hope you enjoyed the game, from what I’ve read on twitter and elsewhere its been hailed as a good 3 points for the Blades in a hard fought game against a good side, if you told me posh would do that let alone muster 2 wins at the lane when I visited BDBL for the first time in September 2007 I’d have taken that so it hasn’t put a sour note on my birthday whatsoever.

Fair reflection if not slightly flattering to the Blades.

I thought we (the Blades) rode our luck at times and I'd be very disappointed not to have got a result or at least scored if I were a Posh fan.

Our keeper, Moore, was MOTM so that speaks volumes.

Nice one PB..thought you looked a decent outfit, especially having lost some key players like the 3 scorers last year at the Lane.. Oztumer,Washington and the West Ham lad Samuelson wasn't it.
Agree the no.2 Smith looked tidy..impressed with the entire midfield after you changed formation.
Think we just about deserved the win,but you could argue you were worth a point.

The referee was indeed a strange one; I thought the poor-ref thing was because of the league we are in but having watched Match of the Day last night the standard of officials across the board seems pretty dire currently.

Fair view. I think against a team like the Posh you have to be very good defensively but also want your keeper to have an inspired game. We nicked the goal early then we looked to manage the game in certain way and we did that very well. Second half was a little open but we(United) also looked to kill the game. Yeah we got blocks in and when the defence did get beat the last part of the defence stood up(Moore). Good goal keepers making good saves isn't about luck. Goal keepers KEEP points on the board.

It was an even game. Won by us having a seemingly decent goalkeeper for the first time since we have been down here. I fancy Peterborough to do well this season

just seen the highlights on blades player and I thought the two keepers made some fantastic saves
lesser keepers and that game could of easily finished 5 - 5

Cheers Posh, I must have missed the bit in the 2nd half where you midfield was overrun. Both sides came out of the game with credit, both look good for play off places.

Nice view from.

The posh keeper made a very similar save to SM's from Done early doors. If we had scored both we would have been off to a dream start.

I thought posh looked very neat and tidy in possession in almost every position. By far the most comfortable side with the ball I've seen so far this season. Like you say, I think a lot of teams (including United last season) would crumble under that pressure - we did ride our luck a bit, but seeing that game out shows huge improvement to me

I was very impressed by Peterborough, one of the better teams I've seen in recent years down at the Lane. Excellent build up play, but clearly lacking some clinical finishing.(Granted that our keeper made some good stops).
I think you will be nearer the top than the bottom come the end of the season, possibly pushing for a play-off place.
Good luck with the rest of the season.

A good read from the OP.

Agree that Posh looked one of the slicker sides I’ve seen at the lane (after the first 15-20 minutes). They passed and moved well and we were stretched at times. Moncur seemed instrumental in that and some of Maddison’s corners in the first half caused real problems too.

I felt they lacked a real out and out striker though. The players just behind (most notably Moncur and Maddison) looked realy dangerous but if they’d had a Billy Sharp type leading the line I think they’d have got a goal or two.

Moore was very good for us. Thought Ebanks Landell made a couple of great last ditch blocks as well whilst Done and Basham’s work-rate helped us make up for the fact that Coutts and Duffy struggled to control the game quite as much as they have done in recent times.

A good, hard fought win for the blades to keep the momentum going and of all the teams in league 1, I really didn’t expect our first clean sheet to come against Peterborough.

Next week will probably be even tougher though away at top of the league Scunny.

Didn't realise that their midfielder Lopes is only 17. Bloody hell.

I like Peterborough's squad. Think they'll get in the top 6, just wonder whether they could do with a more proven manager.

I'd say a more proven centre forward is a bigger issue for them. Their inter-play between the lines was very good but they just seemed a little toothless in the striker department. Reminded me of us under Clough in his first season when Baxter was playing the false 9 role.

They've got a lot of goals from midfield and Nichols and Taylor will score a few, then there's Lee Angol to come back from injury. They look good at the back on paper too, but the way they play will always mean conceding a few.

First 15 minutes 2nd half..we'd gone 442,and they weren't really in it at that point until they made the triple substitutions, but we still gave as good as we got.

True but Angol and Nicholls are young and Taylor is tiny. I don't think they have a real leader of the line in their ranks. And I don't just mean a target man. I mean a real centre forward with a bit of know-how. As I said previously, if they'd had someone like Billy Sharp/ Joe Garner up front I think they'd be a real force to be reckoned with.

Leon Clarke???

It has to be said we are REALLY missing Angol. The ball just doesn't stick up front without him and his link up play at the end of last season was decent. He looked more like a striker who could chip in with goals as well, if we'd had him yesterday I think we'd have picked up a point. Inman is also proven at this level, scored in a dire Crewe side.

I was initially worried when we appointed McCann has he had been part of the management team under 3 managers in the space of 13/14 months, however 3 wins and a draw in 2 separate caretaker spells of 2 games perhaps suggested he knew what he was doing. We've still had an ok start all things considered, just need to stop conceding poor goals wen under no pressure- doesn't apply to yesterday mind.

I'm glad to say I've been proven wrong thus far, we signed well and are better than the last 2 seasons and I've seen every league game so far. We just need to rack points up and maintain a top half position until January when some teams will inevitably get found out and/or drop off as injuries and suspensions bite.

Good read Mr. Posh, agree with most of your points and everybody else's, one thing that hasn't been mentioned is the best chance of the game which fell to done in second half, goalkeeper came off his line and done had plenty of time to chip him, which he made a complete bollocks of, in fact he missed by about five yards.posh have some good players and the game was pretty equal in my view, funny how when you are on a (mini) run you win these sort of games.

Looked like Posh had an excellent midfield for this level. The way we came out to press, shut down any time on the ball, and close up the space, worked very well for maybe the first half an hour of the game and I suspect a lesser group would've been unable to regroup and get a grip on the game. With the benefit of hindsight, it was imperative that we did some damage while we were on top. When we grabbed the goal it would've been easy for the away team to implode (like we did vs. Southend) and throw the game in the first half. Instead they responded well and took it to us without fear.

I'm a big believer that you look at your performances in the short term and they yield the results long term. On that basis, no one's happy to lose, but both teams ought to be seeing that as the yardstick for future games. There are far too many teams at this level that don't look like they want to win. They do what we saw under Clough especially (you start every game with a point, you know...), and Adkins to a similar extent, moving the ball around slowly, not taking risks, hoping that somehow they might nick a goal here and there. It was a breath of fresh air to see us start the game the way we did and have an away team respond in kind with quick passing through the middle and being willing to push full backs up and get men in and around the box. If all teams we played were ready to go for all three in the manner Peterborough did I might not hate being down in this division so much. Probably the most entertaining league game since Wolves came here.

It was still quiet in the South Stand where I was, but you can feel the fans starting to react to the kind of positivity we showed on Saturday. It's not long ball we've been begging to return to. It's that desire.

Ultimately you've been undone by a player who doesn't normally need two bites like that and a couple of outstanding saves. The other side to that is you can expect to score goals most weeks with that style and there's no real shame in conceding one in the manner you did. All the best for the rest of the season as long as you finish below us.
