Posh Blade here!
Better late than never, sorry I didn’t get a pre-view thread up, had typed a mammoth one up but couldn’t get modded on here soon enough and forgot my bladesmad password so, largely my bad.
I was of course there yesterday, fate that this fixture fell 9 years to the weekend that I moved to sheff to start Uni and on the day the students returned........and the day before my birthday! Yes I know......didn’t get the 3 points present etc.........
Got in the ground pretty early, the fact Gary Sinclair chose to play ‘Don’t let me down’ was more than apt, and the message was taken on board by both teams over 90 mins so zero complaints from me.
1st half:
United started the better side as McGee clawed the ball over from behind him! I was just as amazed as Done himself was to be fair, class save! Sharp was the architect for the move that broke the deadlock and it could only be DONE that finished it off. It was a deserved lead based on the opening exchanges and the cheer from the crowd was louder than I remember from the away end in games past.
I knew Posh were still very much in the game and sure enough the eventual man of the match was forced into action as (what looked like) a poor touch from Taylor led to him having to scrap and turn only for Moore to be equal to his shot. Moore would again win the duel with Taylor as a disguised shot was palmed away- will have to ask anyone in the kop but from comments I’ve read after the game it sounds like both were both very good goal-preventing saves.
I felt as the half went on it was a theme of us really giving a good account of ourselves and looking like a good side while United played the pressing game brilliantly and did very well to restrict us, the fact it took some very good play and intricate football to get into decent positions is a real credit to United’s first half performance at 1-0.
We had one very good moment where Maddison got in behind but nobody got on the end of a cross which looked like it only needed a touch- that kinda sums up our problem at the moment, we have nobody to get in the box and finish those chances, that was a key difference- Done did that for united twice but was once denied by GK heroics.
At HT I felt 1-1 would have been a good reflection and consensus was we had played well and were unfortunate to be behind but United had got the hard work done early and had managed the game ver y well, my line being that against pretty much any other team at this level we would have broken through at some point and scored.
2nd Half:
Scougall’s introduction inspired another strong start from United as Duffy was surely only inches away from making it 2-0 and McGee once again had to adjust his position to deny Scougall. Posh again struggled to get going and were overran in the midfield. It has to be said despite posh having more possession, United’s retention of it was better.
As with the first half though, we woke up and began to look the more likely to score, Maddison fired wide after Moore had superbly rushed out to beat him to a through ball, had MM been any quicker that would have been a goal or a penalty.
Posh made 3 subs 2 of which combined to produce posh’s clearest chance of the game. Debutant moore found himself out wide and delivered a superb ball in towards Edwards who looked a cert to score what has become his trademark goal, he could only instinctively just smash it goalwards but Moore somehow got himself in the way of the shot and denied what would at that point have been a deserved equaliser.
Bostwick fired narrowly wide but from then on United saw the game out brilliantly and could have made it 2-0 on the break. The home crowd were behind their side and I heard the kop quite a few times despite plenty of background noise amognst a 1000 strong away following and any noise from the kop really doesn’t travel well when the away end is full- I can say that from experience.
United:
Wilder has definitely erased the malaise of the last two seasons, whilst it was a very even game over the 90, Blades managed and maintained the lead where previous sides would have crumbled and probably lost, and to be honest that’s probably the best I’ve seen Posh play at the lane- genuinely! The fact nobody is moaning about our performance speaks volumes. Scougall probs my man of the match, Done was a menace 1st half and all of the rearguard were exemplary as well. Granted the narrow pitch suited United’s tactics and setup at 1-0 but the ability to execute it was what mattered and delivered the 3 points. It could have ended 2-0 and it wouldn’t have flattered United that much as the game felt very end to end 2nd half with United dominating the latter stages, that was the only thing that disappointed me from a Posh perspective.
Posh:
Felt we played well and looked a very good side at times, particularly the last 15 mins of the 1st half and a 10 minute spell n the 2nd half, that would have been enough to put 2/3 past a lot of sides in this league and the fact we were held to a clean sheet seems to have really encouraged everyone at the lane. Bradford are the only other side to have managed that and in fairness we were dire that game, easily our worst performance so far. Moncur was our best player, his link up play was superb and when he and Maddison (no 11) started to find each other towards the end of the first half we really looked dangerous and I sensed the home crowd began to get nervous. Smith (no2) had a solid game as did Lopes, he is only 17 and whilst he had a mare coming on as a sub last week, he ran it at MK dons and had some real moments of skill and composure. Binnom-Williams was the only player I’d question and he was only playing because Hughes was suspended. Forrester (no 8) was his usual self, Taylor (no 10) still looked rusty. I thought chettle (no 23) made a good impact from the bench and Moore (the 17 year old striker we brought on) coped ok and didn’t look out of place albeit slightly raw.
Crowd/atmos:
Decent. I predicted 21,500 but I was maybe a tad optimistic, was disappointed we didn’t break 1000 given we took 1400 last season during dire weather. The atmos was an improvement on previous Blades vs Posh games at the lane. I heard ‘united, united, united’ chants off the kop quite a few times as well as ‘oh when the blades go marching in’, the anthem was a bit quiet but towards the end the crowd defo played a part. Our lot were pretty quiet aside from that spell in the 2nd half, I saw red when some sang ‘you’re just a *** Sheffield Wednesday’ Sorry if anyone was offended by that if it was heard- we’re all posh southern/east midlands ****s to you anyway I guess!!!!!!!
Ref:
He was weird, did well 1st half, 2nd half he randomly decided to bring the cards out for the exact same fouls he’d kept them in his pocket for earlier. There was one foul on maddison which on another day could have been a red, can’t remember who made it, granted MM is a <insert expletive> when it comes to the dark arts but that was a genuinely bad tackle.
5 occasions later and walking through the main stand car park or down shoreham street and John street with a posh shirt on still doesn’t feel quite right.........dunno why, just will always feel weird for me.
Hope you enjoyed the game, from what I’ve read on twitter and elsewhere its been hailed as a good 3 points for the Blades in a hard fought game against a good side, if you told me posh would do that let alone muster 2 wins at the lane when I visited BDBL for the first time in September 2007 I’d have taken that so it hasn’t put a sour note on my birthday whatsoever.
