Who is that dreadful co-commentator on Radio Sheffield, someone Edwards? What a total arse. We’ll be no better than mid-table? Dream on sonny. “

That will be Keith Edwards, sonny, who nearly 32 years ago to the day scored 4 goals against your team in the first game of the 83/84 season.

Agree with every word . Can it be sent to every player and the management team . Sums us up in a nutshell.

Perhaps too much of a comfort zone at BDTBL with all the facilities for our squad .

I liked this one.

“Yeah, it helped us that one of their defenders gave their goalie an absolute XXXXXX after the first goal though. He needed an arm round the shoulder and a quiet word in his ear. “

I pressume from that supreme motivator Collins. Perhaps the poster like me saw Room 101 on telly the other night with Garry Spinnaker and comments about bawling and shouting at players.

“outstanding performance against the favourites to win the league. Our keeper never had a shot to save, and with players like Cody, Loft, Garmston and Ehmer not in the side, I fancy us for an exciting season. As for Sheff U, bloody awful. Feel sorry for their fans who had to put up with that rubbish. “

Time Warp?

“Simply put, we were too powerful. We ran harder, jumped higher, challenged more strongly and United just couldn’t deal with it. “

Might as well just copy and paste this for the next few games Roy

“Agreed they were generally very sporting towards us, but I was shocked at how early they got on the backs of their own team.
The venom and abuse given to the keeper and defence 10 minutes into the game didn’t help at all. I’ll admit their players were abysmal but it was an object lesson in how not to assist your own team. “

Can't disagree with this. I've already said it once on another thread, but I cannot understand the mentality. It reminded me of a game under Blackwell when Cotterill came on, made some early mistakes, seemed to drop in confidence, and abuse just kept piling onto him.

I would venture a guess that any blades fans who stayed at the end clapping off Gillingham, was more a sign of being pissed off with how shit we were than respect for Gillingham.

No Jehovah, Gillingham were given a fully warranted ovation from the Blades end. United had already left the field to their own particular send off.

Fair enough. Takes big balls to do that. I wouldn't have.

We actually clapped them off , but it was more tongue in cheek , sarcasm , than a sporting gesture . There you go , you cant win em all.

Fair point, but it meant fuck all yesterday when we conceded 4

We better fucking smash these at Bramall Lane.

It'll be some consolation after losing 6-0 on aggregate over the last two visits to Gillingham :(

Some high praise indeed from the Gills, regarding the attitude and character of the Blades fans despite the heavy defeat.

Agree 100% and have said similar in another thread

As has already been said, this one pretty much sums everything up.......

This, this, this, this, and this.

Don't know Willy but after spending all that time and money on a team that didn't even get a shot on target, I think I would not have been pleased either......:tumbleweed:

When you reflect back on this situation and how their fans are talking so casually about beating us it's so depressing. To be fair most of them correctly predicted they would win, or at least a draw.

They've obviously seen someone somewhere refer to them or this league as a pub team and it still rankles. As a result the entire fanbase is tarred with the same brush. It's not even the greatest insult, I could think of plenty worse for them to get upset about. They need to get over it.

Generally our fans have been, and are far more respectful since we came down here than fans of certain other clubs not a million miles away have been. I have rarely seen disparaging comments about this league or its clubs. The worst I've seen is it described as a god awful league which it is, but that includes United in the description. It doesn't mean we think we shouldn't be here. We are a poor team, steadily getting poorer by the year and we are where we are.

We do have the right though to expect better. We back them in greater numbers resulting in greater finance and our players have better facilities than any other club at this level.

We have a right to expect better than league one given that and I don't see why fans like those of Gillingham can't see that. They would be exactly the same.

It's one of the sticks I get beaten with at the office, apparently us Blades turn quicker than a spinning top.

It's far from all of the fans, there are plenty on here reacting to us being murdered fairly well...but for instance there was a bloke (not Collins , a "fan") absolutely tearing into Long from about ten yards away for most of the first half, and just to make sure he heard, at the end of the first half he went down turned it up a gear from about five yards away. Ugly.

And of course who knows what it did to Long?

A decent result for us against the perennial bookies favourites but I'm not going to get carried away and think we're world beaters, similarly you shouldn't be too down as opening day often throws up a freak scoreline, one big improvement on last season was your lads not going down like they had been shot every time there was a stiff breeze, you may all think it was just poor from you but yesterday we would have made most teams look pretty poor and this without our expected top goalscorer and one of our better defenders,

Congrats to the Gills and their fans on a good win. They were well motivated, got their scrappy goals at the right times and deserved their win through sheer effort. Fact is though by the end of the season they'll still be at the bottom end of the table and the Blades will have regrouped and looking for promotion.

The concern for us is, looking at our back four, that that was no freak result. The hope for you is that our back four is average standard for this league (which I'm afraid it isn't).

Still, great stuff from your team. In what is a wide open league, I don't see why an outsider can't rise through.

I would venture a guess that any blades fans who stayed at the end clapping off Gillingham, was more a sign of being pissed off with how shit we were than respect for Gillingham.

I applauded their fourth, prompted by many others around me who had started clapping.

I also applauded (most of) our players and our manager off.

Adkins didn't hide, he came over to the fans. If my team had played like that, then I'd like to think I'd have whatever it takes to face up to the supporters - even if you know your going to get abuse from some - and applaud them for turning out in numbers. He did that, and credit to him.

As for the players: Freeman had run himself to a standstill, Reed is a young lad and a Bladey Blade ;) who'd played fairly well, Basham: again can't fault his effort and he always acknowledges us, Sammon had show real intent and enterprise but been double teamed out of challenges, McFadzean had had a mare but not on purpose etc...

Collins and McEveley (for both having a go at Long) otoh.
