yeah it annoys the crap out of me as well. my favourite is Basle Switzerland.. the Beeb monkeys always pronounce it Baal to make it sound posh. i have a mate from there and they say Basil as in Brush

I lived there for a couple of years. The correct pronunciation is “Bar zel”. However, it is on the border of France, Germany and Switzerland. The French speakers tend to call it “Barl”. Everyone else, apart from the BBC and British Airways pilots, call it “Bar zel”.
