I'm a scientist by trade and I can tell you that I wouldn't not get any of my work published if I didn't include the error margins in the results of any measurements I made. Clearly with a finite number of frames and pixels there is a level of error in the result.

Inside that margin you can make the result show whatever you want, and the cynic inside me says that that is the reason they don't show us any error bars.

Some great posts on this thread and probably put into context all the incidents in today's games.

There is work to be done on the offside rule and that's generally accepted but I do have a feeling that defenders are a bit exposed by the current rule which is far more generous than the previous rule it replaced - previously the forward was offside if level and that means the controversial armpits and toenails are actually a body and a bit beyond where they previously were allowed. The game was great before and after the rule change and it made the games more open.

The Liverpool incidents were well handled and correct and so were ours.

Yes I am happy and proud but a little disappointed that we didn't score today, like we deserved to.
The issue as I’m sure you’re aware is that the technology is not accurate to the degree it’s being applied. If it was maybe I could live with it but at the frame rate we have you cannot be 100% certain to the cm which it is currently trying to be. “Clear and obvious” has to be that in my opinion. In my day the benefit of the doubt went with the attacking side.
Why would you have a system that actively reduces the instances of goals which is the whole point of the game.
Whatever you say to the contrary you are not convincing me that in the way it is currently being used it is fit for purpose.
This is not a Blades thing this is a football thing. You have obviously been watching as long as me or longer given your name, can you really hand on heart tell me this is enhancing the game or viewing experience?

Something has to be done about it that is for sure. It is completely killing the game and taking all of the joy out of it . When you score a goal and can't even celebrate until it gets sorted out 5 minutes later, it can't be good for the game. What has been a great season for us is in danger of being spoiled by this fiasco.

This is a step too far.
It’s a joke.
We can’t just stand and watch it ruin the sport
Start booong the premier league anthem.
Sing fuck var through out
Time to make a stand, because it’s gone too far.
Time to get rid of VAR

The only way the PL will listen is if fans have a protest such as not going to a match and it would have to be done across the whole league. It won't happen will it, because fans want to support their clubs.

And they’ll only just filter the chants with pre recorded stuff. It’s the armchair fans in other parts of the world who appeal to the PL.

Hands up who thinks the atmosphere still quite as good when any goal goes in?

I didn't realise just how many goals would be chalked off and its largely the marginal offside decisions which are the problem. If the offside rule can be amended to clear daylight or VAR only be allowed to come into play (for offside) if there is an obvious clear error in an offside call then it would work much better, and ref's rarely get decisions wrong to the extent that VAR would come into play anyway. If VAR was used to stop the Maradona type goal it wold be fine.

As it stands I'm just sick of jumping all over the place celebrating a goal only for the VAR screen to come on and ruin it.

Not been as furious for a long time. Ref literally went to blow his whistle after his interference, Fleck saw that, stopped running and put his arms up and then the ref puts whistle back in his pocket and plays on. I'm 100% certain if that was us who gained the advantage and scored, it gets chalked off. No doubt about it.

It will take Charlton and Coventry levels of disruption for the Prem to take notice.

If sets of fans start lobbing tennis balls etc on after 5 minutes that’s the sort of protest that is needed. Not songs. They’ll just dub them out.

Anyone fancy getting a quote on a gigantic ‘Mike Riley is a cunt’ banner?

There was nothing wrong with the game before VAR , it's worked for 100 and odd years , so if it's not broke don't fix it! If this was brought in to improve the game then it's gone badly wrong because it has had the opposite effect.

Disagree....Theres so much money at stake now that it seems stupid to leave it to the refs.
They were getting worse every year, we’re being conned, diving, intimidated, crowds by players and fans.
Refs desperately needed help....so the best response is to use technology.

The worse feeling in football must be to know you’ve been clearly cheated out of a game.
Remember the ref disallowed Liverpool 1st goal...VAR corrected the refs mistake.....it’s getting many more things right than wrong.
VAR is applying the rules well but it’s some of the rules that stink.
Fully expect some amendments/ improvements to be made to VAR next season.

Correct. That's the one that needs sorting as it's the one causing the most issues with fans. If you have to resort to rulers and set-squares, it should be obvious that it is NOT "clear and obvious" so you go with the referee's decision a la cricket and LBW. And the rest - be it handballs, possible fouls, in/out the area/box etc - should be simply down to the referee with 30 seconds or 3 replays on the monitor.

Regards offside decisions it should be the most beneficial because it’s a factual decision..not opinion based.
The problem occurs when players are leaning in different positions, so a knee cap or arm pit might be 1cm off side.

My view is that instead of measuring a body part thats offside.....allow a goal if anybody part that can be used to score is on side.
This will mean theres a goal allowed whenever players are level.

Well I have read every argument for and against VAR and at first I thought it would even the game up by not favouring the top clubs which has been a criticism levelled at referee's for a number of years. What actually happens now is the VAR referee sat in a room miles away stops the game and checks the video for any thing that he can to favour the top or established Premier League clubs it is beyond a joke. The good goal we had disallowed at Tottenham the length of time taken to check McBurnie's equaliser v Man Utd when all the previous goal were not looked at Pukki's effort yesterday Mousset's goal tonight it certainly looks like the top clubs get the decisions where ever possible. It's bollocks I'm fast losing interest in the game at a time when we have the best team I have seen in my lifetime, that can't be right.

Clear and obvious doesn’t apply to offside because it’s not opinion based.
Technology is able to measure a black and white decision.....the current rules say 1 cm offside still means offside.
As I said I think the advantage should be given back to goal scorers...so as long as any body part is onside then it’s a goal.

Would be far better if managers/ coaches got 3 opportunities in a game to challenge decisions rather than every decision is remotely reviewed. Sick of seeing refs put their hands to their ears every time someone scores.

I'm finished with it. I want to be able to celebrate a goal again. There are no positives to it as our officials aren't good enough to use it to good effect. We need a proper protest now. Things have gone too far. The fans, players and managers hate it and The Premier League should be embarrassed at how much if a fuck up they've made of it.
Walk out when on sky.... only way .
Ppl talk about vile abuse to players and their should walk off
So why not VAR?
