I think some people are hearing what they want to hear.
On CCV going back and cover:
“With the permanent signing of Ryan Leonard, who can play in that position, and Chris Basham really making that position his own, I struggle to see Cam getting in on a regular basis.”
On changing the system:
“I’m not thinking of changing the plan, I always think we need to be flexible. I think Ryan gives us that flexibility, similar to what Bash has done in the past as well, and he’ll want to nail a position down, but if you look through his career, he’s played centre-half, he’s played right centre-half, he’s played holding midfielder, he’s played in a 2, he’s played in a 3, he’s a very good footballer that’s versatile. While I’m trying to create a 1 for 1 scenario – because I think that’s something that’s hit us a little bit in the first part of the season – when we’ve had an injury we’ve had to shift a couple of positions as well, and most notably being Chris Basham. We’ve been a little bit unfortunate at times, we’ve lost Kieron and George at the same time, and with Kieron coming back onto the grass now and very close to playing some football in a competitive environment, that’s great because he was an outstanding player for us last year, that’s what we’re trying to create....”
It sounded (and reads) as fairly clear that Basham is the main man at RCB hereon in. Yes, Leonard can play there, but Wilder likened that to Basham’s ability to play in other positions. Both will want to nail a position down. Leonard might play there, but from what Wilder says, and importantly the context that he says it in, he will only play there if the circumstance needs it – i.e. Basham is unavailable. Saying that Leonard provides competition to Basham is akin to Basham offering competition to Freeman/Baldock, or Lafferty offering competition to JOC/Fleck.
What we might see this as (and perhaps we could have done this last Friday) is where we’re dominating possession and need a more attacking option, Basham might be subbed for Leonard (or switched back following another sub if he’s already on the pitch) – similar to say Northampton at home last season when Done was brought on for the left wingback role given the constant attacking we were doing.
