Updates from Adkins

Anyone who thinks we can go the season with Collins and JMc as a central defensive partnership and get automatic is deluded.

while they both may be great professionals they simply aren't good enough (unless Adkins is a miracle worker) solid yes, great no.

Add to this that back up is Tel and Harrison (relatively unproven and in Tels case injury prone) and our defence is our one major area of weakness.

Whilst I trust Adkins I am not daft enough to think that everything will turn to gold because of the positivity around the place.

2 CB are a must for me. On a cold, wet Tuesday night match when the ball won't go in the net for us it's your defence that get you the points that keep you pushing on.

Tbh after Tottenham he was making mistakes up until Swindon at home in playoffs where he got back into it fully but I agree with you before Christmas he was a top quality defender and can lead the team good choice of a captain

Ahh, that could have something to do with it. Moved away from glorious Sheffield after Christmas and Tottenham home/away were two of the last games I made it to for several months.

And yes, i think he'll really step up this season and command the match much more, I just hope all the so called 'blades' who are giving him so much stick can back off and give him space to increase his confidence.

All footballers have a ego . They need one to succeed . However IMO Collins has always channelled his , in the right direction.

Not getting the captains arm band may have knocked him a little , but he will understand , that it has been given to McEveley from a psyhcological aspect , to show Adkins has faith and confidence in him.

Adkins has to utilise what he has got , and doing that in the correct manner.

We need players with egos to succeed . League 1 , as we know , is not a place for shrinking violets.

Although a senior pro , Colins has a lot to prove this season , and so has McEveley.

I asked about an ego problem though.

So far, we've notched up "shouts at players in the pitch"

It's this last part that I think is key. Strikes me McEveley is a confidence player, making him captain could be a real boost.

Alternatively public criticism could really adversely affect his performance.

Reminds me of some of the discussions around the England cricket team esp Ian Bell who needs constant reassurance.

What people forget is that Jay got injured - dislocated his shoulder. After that he missed some games but as I understand it he came back and played before the injury was properly recovered with pain killing injections. This was because we had no one else to play CB. It is hardly surprising that his form suffered.

McEveley and Kennedy were great against QPR. I don't get the vitriol a lot of Unitedites seem to aim McEveley's way - yes, he made a couple of mistakes but he's a League One centre half! It didn't help that last season's back 4 was chopped and changed; I think McEveley's main partner was Basham who's a central midfielder.

Put a strong centre half (think Kennedy with knees) next to McEveley and we'll do fine. He'll surprise some people this season.

EDIT: as Yewsman says above: playing with a dislocated shoulder won't have helped. That, along with Howard's ongoing back issues, destabilised the defence and makes Clough's refusal to sign any defenders even harder to understand.

BornOnShoreham alcoblade Superblades I hope you're right.

The only argument mentioned last season was by clough after Swindon with Collins. None of the other players were mentioned at all which alcoblade alluded to.

I just want players at the club that want to play for the club and that can take criticism.
I can't really be right because I've not really taken a position on Collins - I'm ambivalent really. But I haven't heard any evidence of Collins having an ego problem, so I'm interested in anyone suggesting that he has.

However, it seems to me that if nothing else he really demonstrated that he at least wants to play for us.

Got to say, while most comments on Twitter today have been positive, I was amazed at some of the vitriol from (admittedly a minority of) our so-called fans immediately after the initial announcement.

Including reactions aimed directly at McEveley himself.

Hopefully McEveley takes these comments and sticks them right back up each of their arses.

I'll tell you what's disgusting, so called Blades writing that on public social media. How on earth is that supposed to help the player and team? By all means have an opinion, even air it on here, but not directly to the player for all to see. #Disappointed...

One of said Blades has spent the last season or two goading our players with abuse. DDG particularly copped for it.

Is there any proof they are Blades and not just piggy trolls?

We are all fans so of course by all means have opinions of players. What annoys me is completely irrational, abusive critisism. We've all seen it on here, twitter, radio etc. Players even get dogs abuse from some of their own fans at the match.

It's entirely likely that the people who post on here post elsewhere, the Bladey ones will be Bladey, the constructive will be constructive and the negative abusive folk will be just that.

As much as it is of interest to interact with a player on twitter, I do feel they are leaving themselves open to abuse, and dependent on the individual this may or may not have an effect on their game. If I were a player I would steer well clear. (Of course most fans are just pleased to interact and entirely pleasant).

We've all heard it, booing and abuse to our own players and team at matches. What are these supporters trying to achieve? Of course I'm not just saying sit there clapping like a demented seal at pilchard time. And yes fans have a right to criticise and boo, but the logic is flawed that somehow loudly rubbishing a player to their face or online will have the magical effect of making them play better? Its a self fulfilling prophecy hurl abuse at a player the team etc, as a consequence they play worse and the 'abuser' has just self vindicated their own vitriol.

Some of the 'Blades' may be piggy trolls, but I suspect equally a lot are our own Blade trolls.

Agree, with much of that.

But I do feel it's a 'sad world' in which merely having a Twitter account leaves them open to abuse. They should be able to do that without being attacked by idiots.

Sometimes I wonder at the state of people. Perhaps there should be a 30 second delay to tweets so people can think on it and can decide if you really want to hurl irrational (usually illiterate) abuse at a guy merely trying to do his job.

In my book, tagging anyone in a tweet purely to slate them is no different to knocking on their front door to call them shit. Both are the actions of a dick head.

So much for clean slates, ey? Jay's ability to rise above that sort of shit is one of the reasons he's our new skipper. Well done to him, I say.

I would say their worse than Dick heads, their cowards who wouldn't dare say it someones face.
Remember the one who upset Curtis Woodhouse, ?

Spot on.

All I'd say is that I imagine he got lots of supportive tweets* and focusing on the negative ones may not be at all representative.

Depending on the number of followers and their persistence usually with a few Blocks you can filter out the worst and have a good experience.

*I know for a fact he got at least one :-)

So let's hope that Adkins falls out with a few tonight...

Otherwise were fucked!
