Really interesting piece this. I’d say while the McCabe club empire seemed more sporadic, this sounds more thought out and coordinated throughout.

I still think the approach of:

Get to the PL > buy/invest in foreign clubs > take your eye off the ball and drop out of the PL

Is a bit overdone now ;)

I can see the worrying parallel... That said, it seems clear from Bettis in the piece that the ties in Belgium were extremely helpful for the Berge deal. The impression the piece left me with is that, regardless of where we end up next season, this is something the owners view very much as a long term project.

As long as we don't sign the Belgian Alan Shearer 10 years after he's any good with no intention of him playing, a full back who prefers kicking people to footballs and another random Belgian for the sake of I'm sure he knows what he's doing.

So next season we are making our own kits then? XIII is the branding Beerschot use.

Hao Haidong! What a star he was..

Nothing wrong with own brand kits if the quality is there. Pigs ones have been generally shit but at least their home shirt this season is just a proper striped shirt front and back, cant really knock that.

Maybe.

As long as they don't use whoever made the face mask I got from the Meadowhall shop, because that was fucking shite.

Making our own kits? We've been slagging the Pigs off for that.

We've been slagging them off for claiming the energy drink company which sponsors them, which doesn't actually make energy drinks, makes football kits on the side.

Those kits are as cheaply made as you can get, cost an arm and a leg, and are still mopped up by the unwashed of S6 to match their Lonsdale trackie b's from Sports Direct.

XIII is what it says on the tin - the kit-making arm of United World. Now, if the gear is crap quality and we're charged a daft amount for it then we're entitled to slag the club off for it.

Personally I think they have a golden opportunity to reel off some modern versions of classic United kits to get everyone on board with it. I certainly don't think they're daft enough to do something like get rid of stripes without any fan consultation 🙃

Zero issue with home made kits. It's when it goes wrong like it did at the other lot that it backfires on you.

Frankly football kits are a total rip off with the big brands making a big chunk of the profit.

Is it x111 (13) as the 13th man wears em when cheering on at Lane. If so that’s so cheesy it’s ........bad/good........... bad I think

From my experience:

1/ the quality is really good, they are made in the same Chinese factory as where Nike has shirts produced. The shirts have a Nike look and feel.

2/ the price has been a big hit: 35 eur for season ticket holders and 45 eur otherwise. That’s a 50% discount compared to previous seasons. We had a 450% increase in sales.

3/ the XIII brand is specific for Beerschot as it resembles the registration number of our club with the Belgian FA and is regarded as an important club symbol. I am sure they will think of a different home brand for you guys that resembles your history.

I've just been reading about the club on Wiki. Such a rise in a short space of time. Is XII representing 2013?

I have a question though:

If KFCO Wilrijk acquired Beerschot AC after they became bankrupt, why did the club eventually end up dropping the name of Wilrijk in favour of the bankrupt club name?

13 corresponds to the amount of luck we have so I think we should go with that.

Just out of interest, has the Prince set any Belgian taxi companies up by any chance?!

No 13 is the registration number with the Belgian FA which we got when we were founded in 1899. In Belgium when a club goes bankrupt you can not just get away with dropping a few leagues and start over like Rangers, Napoli and Parma, just to name those examples, did. In Belgium the club is simply dissolved and stops. So to start over you need a friendly club at a low level that is willing to give you a new start. That is what Wilrijk did in 2013 from the 5th tier of Belgian football. The season we got promoted back to professional football the name and registration number were changed again and Wilrijk now has restarted in Belgian 6th tier under the name KVC Wilrijk. I am sure their owners did a good deal along the way. They went from 50 season ticket holders to 8.000. But it remains a stupid system.

No but the Yelo deal is a bit odd. It’s a car rental in Middle East with no activity in Western Europe and still they are our main sponsor. Hard to understand the business rationale of that.

But at least they exist.

The pigs might as well be sponsored by Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy
