United players with unexpected attributes

I'd like to nominate Marcus Williams for the ability to convince anyone in football to give him a contract.

Tony Field , after years in lower leagues came on the cheap and became a part of the best team we've fielded since WWII in the 70's. He jumped from third to the first division nearing the end of his career and wasn't at all lost there.

Bert was telling someone at the match yesterday that Deane was a great winger.

Speaking of Brian Deane, i was watching the footage of the 3-1 win at Hillsborough with Brownie Jnr, and for the first goal Deane goes off galloping down the channel to the by line where he plays a lovely ball in to the middle for Dane Whitehouse to slam home.

I can also remember Brian Deane being one of the most unsightly and clumsy looking footballers I've ever seen, but that in that unsightly footballer was one of the most talented and skilful footballers I've ever had the pleasure to watch in a United shirt. I also think that is why he never got the recognition that he deserved.

I love how we Blades have turned this into a negative attribute of a shit player thread rather than the positive I think Bergen Blade intended.

To that end I'd add Matt Done's one on ones and Neill Collins' ability to accept fault.

Joe Shaw - 5.8" ? in a day when centre forwards were battering rams on licence.

Before Don Revie's first match as L**ds manager against the Blades in March 1961, he put Jack Charlton (6 feet 3 inches) up front so that he would win a lot of the balls in the air against Joe Shaw. In that match Shaw was comfortable playing against him because of his excellent anticipation and timing. Jack said of that match "I remember Joe Shaw of Sheffield United laughing at me, I was making such a mess of it. After I protested Don switched me back to centre half"

I have a feeling Chris Bashan's prehensile tail and Paul Coutt's ability to glide will come in handy before the season is out. I suspect, although am not totally convinced, that Simon Moore will make a save with his 5 foot long adhesive tongue as well.

Jamal Campbell Ryces ability to run faster than anyone else in the team despite being the oldest player.

I liked him actually, only him and Billy came out of last season with any credibility.

Peter Beagrie was excellent in the air.

Keith Edwards could cross a ball - took the majority of the corners.

Tony McMahon took good free kicks occasionally

I mentioned on the latest 115th thread about Coutts, that despite him playing a deep lying midfield role, he doesn't do many crunching tackles, he's clever and nicks the ball from his opponent, then quickly gets away or lays it off to get us going again. Reminds me a bit of how Carrick plays as a defensive mid, totally different from the Keane type but still very effective.

Agree with the comments on Deano's crossing, regularly used to say if only he could get on the end of his own crosses!
Good shot on Jock's heading too, scored a surprising amount of headed goals for us.

Matt Mills ability in the air for a little guy ! Brilliant

Paul McGrath.
The ability to get man of the match without even kicking a football.

I swear that when we won 4-2 at Oxford in 1997-8 McGrath never got above walking pace in the whole game. His timing and anticipation was immaculate.

Mike Lake and his instance on only scoring absolutely amazing goals

Rob Kozluks random pieces of skill (usually in ridiculously dangerous places)

Sun Jiahs utterly mental challenges

Danny Cadamateris ability to hit the post

Leigh Brombys throws

Chris Porters penalties

Chris Morgan in the Premier League. Everybody was screaming what a liability he'd be, how he'd be suspended all the time and I thought he was sound to be honest.
Chris Morgan's ability to bodily hoist little Argentinian scumbags and hurl them on the floor.

Chris Morgan's ability to give a death-stare of such intensity to the self-same little Argentinian scumbag that he basically may as well have spent the rest of the game in the changing room for all the good he was.

Jostein Flo’s acrobatic ability. Big lumbering forward who on a couple of occasions scored with spectacular bicycle kicks. A joy to behold.

McGrath really was an exceptional talent. If he’s had good knees and looked after his body, he would surely have been one of the best centre halves on the planet for his time.
