Unless you've been living in a cave for the past few weeks you'll know that it is the US Presidential election tomorrow, which is widely being called the most significant of modern times. It is also of course an away day for United at Bristol City
Which other United games have happened on the same day as a major news story?
The biggest one was 9/11 when United were away to Grimsby in the League Cup (I consider myself an avid Blade but I struggled to get too wound up by that game on 'The Day The World Changed' ( I've included highlights of the game on this thread, I've never seen such a well observed minute's silence).
I remember on the night when Princess Diana died I had been to Huddersfield to watch us draw 0-0 (a disappointing game given our impressive start under Nigel Spackman).
The only Britush general election that clashed with a United game was in 2015, a play off game against Swindon played on a Thursday. I walked back from the ground despondent about United's promotion chances after a home defeat and then found out the Tories had won the election (not the result I wanted either).
On the day of the Hillsborough tragedy, United were away at Northampton, again another game where it was difficult getting too involved with due to the breaking news.
I'm sure there are plenty of others that I've forgotten about. I remember on the day Princess Margaret died in 2002 we beat Portsmouth 4-3 (and there was the worst observed minute's silence in history.
I'm not going to reveal who I want to win tomorrow's election. I'll just say Rak-Sakyi is the only right winger I'm wanting to do well!

I was at that Northampton away game in 1989 it was horrendous, a lad on our coach had a brother that had gone to that semi final and other people knew people there, it was surreal that second half a steward was relaying the death count to people. It was the first time I'd seen grown men crying.

We subsequently found out much later that evening via a call to a payphone the brother was safe but that journey home was sickening.

I was at Northampton that day too, went with my dad in the car, heard about it at the game and was shocked listening to the radio on the way home. Can't imagine how difficult that was waiting to hear about your brother before mobiles.

At that Northampton game, someone in a wheelchair by the side of the pitch got smashed in the face by the ball. They were in a pretty bad way and I think the game was delayed whilst they got treated.

I was also at Northampton that day my American business associate in Chicago phoned my wife around 4.30 our time to ask if was there
Was all over the news in Chicago

I was there at Grimsby but that’s the first time I’ve ever seen the highlights. Felt such an irrelevance even when at the match.

The US is a mess right now. I am a dual citizen (US and UK) and will vote tomorrow. I've told my fabulous wife that we will vote before the SUFC game so we can be back for the 2.45pm kick off.

I am geniungly fearful for the US, and the world, if Trump wins tomorrow. While I am personally a middle sitting citizen between the Democrat and Republican parties, there is no way on the Earth that Trump is good for us.

God forbid that Trump wins tomorrow. If he loses he will declare that he was robbed and all hell will break loose!!

We drew 4-4 at home to Exeter on the day Jimmy Savile died.

29 October 2011.
I remember seeing the story on my newsfeed at halftime and feeling saddened. Clearly I was the only person who had no idea!

The sexual abuse allegations didn't fully come out until after he died.

Hundreds of people attended his funeral and it was all over the news.

I seem to remember getting back from Crewe Alexandra in 2002, to find out the Queen Mother had died.

I seem to remember we played a night home game on the day HMS Sheffield was hit by an Argentinian missile during the Falklands war in 1982.
Perhaps Silent Blade will clarify but I remember the minutes silence before kick off was immaculately observed.

I remember coming out of Millwall away in 2002/03 to find out a space shuttle had crashed in America

3 Oct 1995
We played Bury (RIP) at Gigg lane - don’t remember much about this game at all but apparently we lost (league cup R2 I believe).

But the biggest surprise on the day came from LA County Court where OJ was found not guilty for the murders…

I was at that game. We was shite and Bassett send the players back out 10 minutes early for the second half

I thought it came on the TV in the penny black after the game .time doesn't help the memory

And if the Democrats lose they will declare that it was Russian interference. Whatever the result of the election it will be a complete shitshow with neither side accepting defeat. Let's hope that whoever wins does so by a large margin.... that's the only way that some sort of order might occur.

Anyone else who managed to get hold of a tape, and learn off by heart Jerry Sadowitz's 1987 show 'Total Abuse' might disagree.

"There have been serious allegations of child abuse in Cleveland. To my mind there is only one way to find out whether this is true or not and that's to ... CALL IN JIMMY SAVILE! You can’t afford to fuck about! Bring in an expert! Am I right? A friend of mine reckons Jimmy Savile is a paedophile. Rubbish — he’s a child-bender! That’s why he does all the fucking charity work: it’s to gain public sympathy for when his fucking case comes up."

You can hear the original here:

All I said was the sexual abuse allegations didn't fully come out until after he died, which is true.

On the day he died he was still a knight of the realm, his knighthood was never revoked.

In life he was never disgraced.

1985 Bradford fire, we played Brighton away. Think we lost 1-0....... we stayed over in Brighton that night and didn't even hear about the fire until reading the Sunday papers over breakfast in a greasy spoon the day after.
