Give yourself one minute to think of your top 5 'battlers', you know, 5 players who would run through a brick wall for us:

Mine are:

Brian Richardson.
Mick Speight.
Trevor Hockey.
Chris Short.
Chris Morgan.

Summer thread.

Willie Carlin
Ken Mallender
Rock Richardson, remember him grabbing Piss In Boots Bremner by his shirt collar.

Hockey, Kenworthy, Stancliffe, Quinn and broken wrist Morgan

To badly mis-quote the greatest,

“If Vinnie Jones ever dreamed he was a footballer, he’d wake up and apologise “.

Chris Short was an excellent right back for us, an underrated one. I'm surprised you've listed him as one of our top five battlers though? I would add Chris Armstrong simply for coming back when medical advice was he should retire. I hope he is OK in his battle against MS.

One from more recent times.

Michael Doyle.

Even though he suffered the igmony of being a part of the worst United side in my lifetime, I never saw him shirk a tackle, or not give it all. Limited footballer but one that got credit for battling away and never giving him.

I knew exactly what Doyle was and what he brought to the team after he was released and the following season I was subjected to a season of Dean Hammond

Never liked him or Collins. Despite being “decent pros” they spent half the time ripping into younger and less experienced colleagues when the chips were down. Should’ve been grabbing the games by the scruff of the next themselves and leading by example.

I know but he springs to my mind as a cultured and talented full back who also. chased every lost cause and I used to wince when he threw himself I to 40/60 tackles. Inevitably he got injured a lot. You could see it coming.

I might get chastised for being a bit of a Bladey Blade, forelock tugging, cap doffer by Pinchy but I actually preferred Mitch Ward down the right.
