It was horrific but then at least there was a reason for it. Johnson's elbow the previous season - the one which fractured Santos' eyesocket - was the epitomy of "absolute thuggery". Given the desire for revenge I'm amazed Santos didn't go for Johnson's standing leg.

Clearly you missed Roy Keane's challenge on Alf-Inge Håland



Remember this being used as an example of criminal intent during my law degree, it was that bad a challenge.

I was going to say same thing but the ref lost control, Suffo nutted someone IMS but in realistic terms that ginger cunt Megson blew it out of all context, the lying pig bastard. In Warnock's book he writes how not long after he met Megson at a football awards, and Megson offered his hand Warnock's reply included fuck off.

Out of context the challenge was certainly a red.

But as others have said, what Johnson did to Santos makes the tackle seem tame. Personally I thought that Warnock did the right thing by giving Santos his moment and boy did he take it.

I've always been an advocate of hard but fair tackles. Tackles which were designed to send a message but not injure. I don't believe any footballer goes out to injure someone as they can take away their livelihood in an instant. But there is a fine line and some of these unprovoked tackles/ challenges over the years which clearly went to far can be a bit strange. (Saturday/ Sunday league is different, you get some right knobheads at that level that do go out to injure people, but they are few and far between, or at least they used to be)

Two that stick out are Johnson on Santos and Ainsworth on Whitehouse. Santos was able to get his revenge, Whitehouse wasn't.

Is it right? No of course not. Was Keane right to do what he did to Haaland? I'm undecided, but i'd perhaps have done the same. I bet Keane and Santos felt better for doing what they did though
 
I don’t think what santos did can be excused or given justification. It was pure thuggery. Yes what Johnson did to him was awful too but so was what Morgan did to Hume. For me, poor mgmt from Warnock, especially after the hotel incident it was poor decision to put him on, that ultimately shamed the club.
As for Keane, well, that did end a mans career. Pure premeditated revenge as he says in his book.

Keane deliberately got Haaland.
Santos deliberately got Johnson.
It's a criminal act and he should have been in court for it.

Should Johnson have been in court for what he did to Santos? Or is this the ‘lets slate Warnock regardless of their being 2 sides to each story’ section of the forum?
 



I remember the front page of the Star the Monday after the Forest game the previous season with a picture of Santos in hospital and the headline ‘is this the face of modern football?’

Santos had the opportunity to finish Johnson’s career and could have left his standing leg in pieces, but instead just kicked him up in the air. I think that shows a great deal of restraint.
 
I used to go to the gym with Georges. Great bloke to talk to. In the gym that used to be in the hotel, not there any more.
