From the start of the season Adkins has said he wants the players to be able to adapt to different formations in a match (three was the number mentioned - but it will vary).
He did WHF,and he has changed it about, but he seems to prefer 442 most of the time.

Don't Walsall play 4231 Woody, they definitely have in the past..I think a few teams have used it at this level to be fair,MKDons for instance...I'm not sure I agree that Adkins has decided to settle on that formation,we mainly line up 442 and it looked like we started with with that on Saturday with Adams and Sammon up top,Couuts and Hammond holding as you say, flanked by Baxter and JCR...it more resembled 4231 in the 2nd half with Baxter in behind Sammon or was it 4411..we need Bergen to shed some light.

I'm not needed at all, you got it right. 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-1-1 is roughly the same. It should be noted that Baxter didn't play as a winger. When we got the ball he drifted in field and tried to find space there, leaving Freeman to provide the width on the right.

For me Baxter was the man of the match - played some decent balls, stuck away the pen and looked really committed. JCR was hard for them to handle and was positive, although didnt always deliver with his final ball. Scougs also made a difference when he came on - was positive and got forward.

Hammond still looks off the pace, I'll give him time, but doesnt really look like the player that was talked about before his transfer.

All I'd say about this is that Baxter is a lot more mobile, energetic and committed this season - it's all relative I know.

Completely agree. From what I've heard he is genuinely greatlful after the drugs thing and is trying to be a 'proper' footballer.

He has even spent time watching some of the young academy lads and helping them.

Of course, a 'more mobile' Baxter is a relative thing, but IMHO his workrate is better than we have ever seen at BDTBL.

I thought Baxter was very effective doing that & that the system (with Freeman bombing on) worked well at times. Scougall drifted inside nicely from the left too later in the second half.

Also noticeable, I thought, was that Coutts & Hammond didn't both lie deep. Most of the time it was Coutts mopping up in front of the back four (or, rather, initiating forward movement from that deep-lying position) with Hammond in a more advanced role, although they did seem to rotate roles in the second half. Hopefully a sign of some structure in midfield & even of an understanding developing between the two of them? Early days though, & much more demanding opposition to come.

Coutts is the best player on our books never wastes the ball and sets a good example on the art of keeping possession. We need him to stay fit as the team will need his ability as the season developes he will dictate games and we should build the team round him at times he reminds me of
Glyn Hodges with his languid style he has quality written all over him. Anyone who thinks he can't playdon't
understand the game. Hopefully he will stay fit and we can build. around him.

I think most recognise he is a technically capable footballer. The concern is his lack of athleticism and aggression (same as Baxter really). Most are concerned that having him and Baxter in the same team means we don’t have enough running in midfield. Especially with Hammond also looking quite immobile. Basham, Reed and Scougall would provide a much more energetic 3 in the centre. The problem is, between the 3, they lack guile, strength and ball retention. If we’re to play a 3 it should probably mix up those 2 sets of 3. 1 of Baxter and Coutts, 1 of Reed and Scougall and 1 of Hammond and Basham. The other issue is Basham being required at CB. Perhaps that will change when Edgar is fit though.

haha the funniest thing was the steward lady who came onto our coach as we pulled in to greet us.. she asked if anyone had brought a flag with them but then if it was fireproof and did they have a fire safety certificate for it??!!

Regrettably ..... this is just part of the pathetic crap that we have to put up with nowadays, being a football supporter.

I'm surprised they didn't ask you if you had a parachute, given that you were in the upper tier and if you had a life-jacket in case of flooding from the heavy rain !!!

Good luck for the league this season ....

My main gripe with Coutts (and the same applies to Hammond) is that they stand still once they've passed the ball. Neither of them look to receive the next pass unless it means coming straight back to them. The lack of mobility in those two, going in both directions, is not a good sign IMO.

It's quite interesting to see the ratings and comments on players like Basham and Coutts, who just the season after became integral to the team.
Why was that I wonder?
Hold my hands up on Coutts, I really disliked him that season - although I maintain he was dialling it in somewhat.

Notts Count away 2015 (?)

He came on as sub, played right midfield and he was absolute class.

He ran the midfield and we won 2-1.

Remember trying to tell everybody how great this lad was gonna be for us.

Transformed the way we played and was our best midfielder from then on in till that horror tackle ended his career.
