Sorry for the delay – got back late last night and work all day today….

----

After a series of unconvincing performances, the Blades put in their most complete performance for some time as they deservedly beat playoff contenders Middlesbrough at Bramall Lane. United were quick out of the blocks and swarmed all over Boro and finally got the goal their domination merited thanks to Jesurun Rak Sakyi applying the finish after Gus Hamer had fed Callum O’Hare. However, the visitors pegged United back after Matthew Donoghue’s incredibly harsh decision to penalise a shirt pull on Jack Robinson at a corner. Delano Burgzorg converted the penalty just before half time. United kept their composure and continued where they left off after the break to keep creating several chances. They finally got the second goal after sub–Ben Brereton Diaz superbly chipped Travers after Sydie Peck’s wonderful slide rule pass set him away. Anel Ahmedhodzic’s header sealed the seal and gave a more realistic gloss on the final scoreline.

Wilder shuffled his pack with Peck, O’Hare and Rak Sakyi in for Choudhury, Brereton Diaz and Campbell. Tom Davies was back on the bench. Kelechi Iheanacho was brought in to make his first start for a Boro side who had been inconsistent for much of the season, despite some impressive high scoring wins.

After such a lacklustre showing at the weekend, the Blades seemed determined to put in a better account of themselves and were on the front foot from the off. Hamer was looking in the mood as he got on the ball and was showing his full repertoire of skills. O’Hare was also busy and the football was being played at a fast tempo and Boro were struggling to hold United up. The first chance came when Rak Sakyi cut in and hit a low shot that Travers pushed away. The keeper then had to be alert to fist away an in-swinging corner. Hamer twice came away from his man and on the second occasion, his delightful nutmeg of Ayling saw him away and his curling effort was narrowly wide. Rak Sakyi had another effort saved as the domination continued. Peck and Souza were controlling midfield and Hamer was proving tough to hold up.

United finally took the lead and it was no surprise it came from more brilliance from Hamer. The midfielder ran away down the left and played in O’Hare. The midfielder made a bit of a mess of it and Giles got back but somehow the defender and Travers managed to botch clearing it away and it fell perfectly for RAK SAKYI to tap home. It was the second goal in consecutive games for the winger.

The home side continued to dominate and O’Hare’s energy was helping United keep Boro penned in and with threats from a number of areas, were looking in total control.

Boro had created nothing but a rare break saw Hackney steal in as Clarke gambled and his shot was saved from Cooper. Soon after they were level. Iheanacho looked offside in the move that led to a corner kick. As the ball came in both Robinson and Edmundson had hold of each other but somehow referee Matthew Donoghue opted that it was the United player that was the aggressor and pointed to the spot. The referee had had previous at Bramall Lane and the crowd let him have it after the bizarre award. Edmundson seemed to throw hands at both Robinson and Souza in the ensuing fracas but only received a yellow card; along with Robinson. After the protests and a delay, which saw Cooper booked, BURGZORG kept his composure.

The next few minutes became scrappy and United were unsettled for the final moments of the half with the fans venting at Donoghue as he called time and walked off to a cascade of boos.

United came out second half and had to make a change with Tom Cannon rolling his ankle and was replaced by Tyrese Campbell. The Blades tried to get back to causing Boro problems and O’Hare and Hamer continued to link well. O’Hare was nearly in and then another neat move involving Rak Sakyi saw the winger have a shot blocked. Iheanacho was flagged offside as he poked home and the visitors were at least having some attacks after barely getting in the home side’s half in the first half. However, O’Hare had a great chance after Clarke cleverly played him though but hit shot was blocked right in front of goal from van den Berg who probably denied a certain goal Barlaser came on for Ayaz.

Burrows had an effort blocked and Campbell then could not quite get his shot away. Peck then was the next to have a go. Brereton Diaz replaced Rak Sakyi with just over 20 minutes to play in a game that was more open than the first half but the Blades were still the better side and looking more likely.

Conway and Whittaker came on for Iling Junior ad Iheanacho but it was not long after when the breakthrough was made. Possession was surrended and Peck carried it on and played a delightful though ball that dissected the Boro defence. BRERETON DIAZ was in and took a touch before cooly chipping the keeper superbly. The Chilean celebrated in front of the Kop whilst the assisting player Peck jumped into the arms of the coaching staff on halfway.

Despite getting back in front, Boro did respond and Burgzorg twisted and turned in the box after the flag stayed down and Cooper had to get a vital touch to tip over. Hamer had to come off with his hamstring tightening, after he has received treatment twice in the game already. McCallum came on in his place. United had a great chance to seal it after Campbell and O’Hare robbed the Middlesbrough defender and suddenly they were in. Campbell bore down on goal but with Brereton Diaz clear to his right, he opted to go for goal and Travers made the block.

Boro came back down and Burgzorg had an effort at Cooper but United were able to win a corner t the other end and as the ball came in, AHMEDHODZIC outjumped Travers and headed home. The keeper looked at the referee more in hope than expectation that the decision would go his way but Donoghue finally got a big call right and it was 3-1 and the result was effectively sealed.

United managed the extra 5 minutes of stoppage time comfortably and could even have gone for another as Boro looked well beaten at this stage as the Blades saw it out with ease. It was another three points at the Lane, their second in a week, but this performance certainly would have left the supporters leaving the ground far more optimistic about their teams’ promotion chances.

United – Finally, we see a convincing performance with a win. We had being achieving the latter but it had been a concern that for some time, we had limped over the line and got away with some really poor showings. We had looked a side without a clear plan and were also shipping goals more alarmingly. Last night we saw a Blades team that went for the jugular, attacked at pace and totally overwhelmed a side that had their own promotion aspirations. It was a far cry from those Hull/Pompey games and many others where we have sort of struggled to see how we are set up and how we are trying to attack. On top of that we won all the battles, won our headers/races/chases and were far superior in every department. From the off, United were at it and with Hamer inspired and big contributions from Rak Sakyi, O’Hare etc to cause the Boro defence all sorts of problems. We had chances to score long before we did and not sure they barely had an attack before we finally led after more brilliant work from Hamer. The Peck and Souza combo worked better with the balance between them both. After the first, we should have had more but then a careless moment where we lost our shape led to a chance and then a corner and then the ridiculous penalty – at least in my opinion and many others.

To be fair to Wilder and the team, they did not let this get to them and came out and continued to look the far better side as they created more chances and O’Hare should have taken at least one. We moved the ball around better and Campbell gave us a bit more of a focal point. Boro were more in the game in terms of having some possession and attacking forays but United were still the superior team and looking the more likely and the second goal when it came was a beauty in its execution and finish. After this, the visitors had one effort but we got the third and in the end 3-1 probably flattered them. We had lots of the ball in meaningful areas, played some quick and up-tempo football and looked dangerous. We played both down the middle and the sides and collectively we looked like a team rather than one that was struggling for an identity. Rak Sakyi and O’Hare coming back made a huge difference. The former with his forward running and ability to carry it and take men over with him and the latter for his work ethic, pressing and link play. Peck also was excellent as he buzzed around, got on the ball. Even defenders who I had criticised at the weekend, Anel and Clarke, had better games. We will had moments where we were a bit loose or lost our shape but overall, we played a very good game and looked a side that was going for promotion – that is something we have not said much recently.

Credit to Wilder and the players, as they have had a fair bit of heat after recent matches but came out and delivered. The comment about the players being arrogant clearly hit the mark as many came out and really took the game by the horns and ensured we just controlled all the key parts of the game. He brought a few out of the new signings, showing he would rotate and not be afraid to make changes and then some came on and made an impact from the bench. The competition for places is good and with everyone nearly fit (Seriki and Moore should be back soon too).

I came out feeling like we looked a good side again and the players showed they can deliver performances of a high energy where we attack sides and can create a plethora of chances. We easily could have had double the goals we scored. It was night and day from Saturday – literally and in terms of what we saw on the pitch. Boro were poor and maybe they are struggling to find their way and looked the fragmented side we had seen from our own team only days before but it seems they have been ’off it’ for some time. However, I want to praise our team for once for really imposing ourselves and even with some rank bad officiating, stuck to the task and got a well-deserved win.

Luton next and they are in dreadful form. I was kind of hoping they may win one before they play us as they are not a bottom of the table side (evidence says they are I know!) and think it will not be as easy as 2nd v bottom. We need to make sure we try and score first as their confidence is at a really low ebb. With Leeds on the horizon, but a 9-day break till then after Luton, we have to make sure we can take last night onto the next few games and keep the levels high. If we play like we did v Boro, we will not be far away but need to ensure there is not a drop off.

Ratings:

Cooper 6.5/10 – Fine but not really troubled much. Did make one excellent save from the shot second half he tipped over. Other than that, he did what he had to with the minimum of fuss.

Clarke 6/10 – Much better than the game v Pompey and he was closer to his man, determined and for the most part used the ball well and did get forward when he could. A few times thought he lost his shape and tried to gamble – did that on the chance first half and then made it worse by kicking it back to them. He was better though.

Burrows 5.5/10 – I may get criticised for this but think he again was a bit off it. He was poor in a lot of his passing and crossing as he hit the first man too much. He did take the corner that led to the third goal. He has not been awful by any stretch but not see the attacking threat or sureness in his play that we had for most of the season.

Ahmedhodzic 7/10 – Was poor Saturday but a much better game tonight. He was really solid in what he did. A few times he switched off when they played balls in the box but overall he won his battle, came out with the ball well and looked more assured. Scored a headed goal for good measure too. Hit the roof with a clearance too – takes some doing that as was the South Stand!

Robinson 6/10 – Not at the level of Anel but he did ok. Steady enough. The penalty was harsh but he and Anel do grapple a lot (all defenders do to be fair). He made a few decent cross field passes. Takes too many touches to move it on still and wonder if Holding technically would allow us to move the ball quicker and more accurately. Defensively dealt with some dangerous attackers well though.

Hamer 8.5/10 – Man of the match for me. A few others were close but he ran the show for long spells, particularly first half. He was really in the mood with some sublime skills where he was essentially taking the rise out of many of the Boro players. At least 2 or 3 nutmegs and if the shot after the one on Ayling had gone in, would have been one of the goals of the season. His work rate was superb, despite feeling his hamstrings a fair bit and needing treatment and led the charge with his vision and dribbling. The goal first half came from his sprint and pass. Couple of things did not come off but you expect that with a player that always tries things and he does work back after misplaced touches or flicks. Second half he continued to link well with others, if we did not see as much of a goal threat or clear passes to chances. He still linking up and the man who often was threading the needle or moving it on with clever touches. Did not get booked and the decision to sub him looking more of a precaution. Class act and looked every inch a Premier League player on that show.

Souza 7/10 – He has been feeling his way back into things after such a long time out but he was more like his old self last night. He won the ball and moved it on and showed some lovely skill to come out of tight areas. He combined well with Peck as we won midfield. Got back to defend and see off a few Boro attacks using his pace and strength. Not sure about the wiggling step overs when he had it near the South Stand!

Peck 8/10 – Not far off man of the match. A few times he maybe should have done better with shooting chances and a couple of fouls (soft to me) but outside of that, did not do much wrong. Competitive but in the right way. Got around the feel well and showed great energy. Seemed to be all over the place and his play on the ball was calm, composed and intelligent. Moved the ball forward both by passes and his own runs. The drop of the shoulder to let the ball run across him and then the through ball was beautiful. Loved his celebration too as he slid on his knees and jumped into the coaching staff. When he scores we will see something special in terms of how he marks it! He had been flogged to death with all our other injuries but we have seen glimpses of what could be a very good footballer and maybe even top level. Last night he genuinely excited me in terms of what he could become and with Arblaster alongside him too. Love his attitude and way he wants to win but plays with the right attitude and a smile too!

O’Hare 7.5/10 – Would be an 8 if he had taken 2 or 3 very good chances – one first half and one second half he took too long over and dithered and got both blocked. However, despite this lack of clinical aspect of his play (not scored enough goals), his others aspects of his play were outstanding. His work ethic is something else as he leads the press, does not give defenders a minute but on the ball he always shows and links well with others with quick feet and interchange. Important part of what we do and when we do well, it is work off the ball that is probably even more important than the play on it.

Rak Sakyi 7/10 – Bit like Souza, after a spell out with injuries, it has took him some time to get back to form and he has been kind of eased back in but even as sub he has not always impressed but scored Saturday and got the deserved start. He was a threat all first half with his running, dribbling and ability to commit his man (men at times as they doubled up). Had two decent efforts on goal and then scored being in the right place. Continued to carry the ball well. Second half maybe not quite as much of a threat and saw less of him leading to the change.

Cannon 4/10 – I keep waiting for something to happen, granted only 4 games in but seeing next to nothing. Does not move off the ball, timid in the challenge and lacks ability to read the game. Last night we had lots of ball and some decent crosses coming in but failed to anticipate or even get near them. Quite languid in his style too. I want to be more positive but failing to see what sort of player he is? Got a knock and came off but I would have took him off anyway.

Subs -

Campbell 5.5/10 – He offered much more than Cannon did in terms of his movement, link play and ability to run the channels. He was able to hold it up a bit too and was a nuisance as he challenged defenders. Some decent combination play too. However, he did have one shot blocked and then missed a huge chance when he needed to just roll it across (or put it in the net!). He still looked far superior to Cannon.

Brereton Diaz 6.510 – Not always in the game but must applaud a superb finish. The rest of his play was better than it had been in the other games where he has looked lacklustre and short of fitness. Did at least offer us an out ball and on the goal, it was a great run and even if his first touch seemed heavy, his second was delightful. He needs to earn minutes though and would keep with the wide men who started.

McCallum – Came on and gave us some energy as we finished the game strongly.

Davies – Thought he got straight onto it as he used the ball well and carried it down the side. Great to have him back and competition for places is good in midfield.

Choudhury – Only brought on at the close as we were seeing time out.

Manager: Wilder 8/10 – Been critical of him but last night he saw we were ‘bang on it’ and we controlled and dominated the game. Made the changes and they all worked. We played incisive and attacking football, played as a team and looked a threat all night with good energy all round the team. He made sure we were really determined to put out a good performance and whatever he said between Saturday and Wednesday internally (and some maybe externally) worked. He may have also reflected on his own tactics and set up, even if he did not say so privately. Must have been sweet after the Boro fans sang his name and not in an affectionate way – maybe they might be wondering about their own manager’s tactical nous and way of playing. As I was leaving heard a fan discuss the chant to Mrs Wilder who said, ‘He might be a w*****r, but he is my w*****r!’ Made me smile.

Middlesbrough – I keep expecting them to click and at least get a stranglehold on the 5th or 6th place but seem to be going in the wrong direction? Had a lot of transfer coming and goings and their frontline has changes with Latte Lath going and a host of new players coming in such as Whittaker, Iling Junior and Iheanacho but it seems a bit of a mess in terms of the plan – bit like accusations levelled at us a lot! Their defence gives away so many poor goals and whilst they have had some free scoring games, they have lost to some dross too. The seem to be struggling to click and need to be more solid in terms of the shape/defensive structure. Last night I thought they may hurt us with the striking options and the pace/power but they barely laid a glove on us. They never got hold of the ball and were outmuscled and outran all over the side. They lack pace and mobility at the back but also struggle with movement of quick players and the ball over the top – a fair few goals came like this.

Carrick had a great start and nearly got them up but they did not make the playoffs (granted lost a fair few key men) and this year as it stands, they may miss out again unless they get it together. It seems they lack leadership to me. United’s squad is young (you forget even Souza, Hamer, O’Hare, Davies are mid 20’s) but Boro, despite having some good young players like Hackney and Morris, do not seem to have the know how we do, to get those 1-0’s in games they are not dominating. They still have lots of talent and some impressive players but need to find a way to win those scrappy games you inevitable have at this level. Last night though they were second best in every department and lucky to even have a foothold in a game that they were rarely in. Seen some starting to question the manager so be interesting what they do in the summer if they fail to make the top 6. He was seen as the next big thing (talk of Man Utd) only 18 months ago but now realising it is an tough league and you need different ways to win – not always about fluent football. I still think they may make a run and nick that 6th spot and if they got it together, could still be a dangerous opponent for a 3rd place side (might be us) but need to make some improvements and quite quickly.

Opponent Man of the Match – Not sure anyone was great. The lad Burgzorg scored the penalty and at least looked a threat and had another shot saved. Hackney is a good footballer and Wilder clearly rates him (would not be shocked if he went for him if we went up despite having Arblaster and Peck) but he struggled last night as Peck outshone him. Conway at least showed some energy when he came on and pressed better than the other forwards.

Opponent Weak link – Travers made a mess of the first and third so takes this award but the whole defence looked slow and were not switched on to some incisive football. Edmundson looked a bit of a clogger and Ayling showed me why I was glad we did not sign him. I have always liked the look of Azaz but he was not in the game and Iheanacho, whilst still showing some of the power and pace he possesses, proved why he has become a bit of a journeyman even before he was 30 – he still should rip up this level you think?

Referee/Officials – The Matthew Donoghue show again. We have had him a lot and generally we end up talking about him. That is not a good sign. He did not disappoint again. The most frustrating thing, even outside the penalty was his total inconsistency from start to finish. At times he gave pushes and shoves for little and then let things go. It became very stop start and he seemed obsessed with him showing everyone he was there! He tends to assert authority by not really asserting it but just giving fouls to show he is in charge – when in effect he is not really controlling things. We had a few strange calls, not helped by assistant refs who seemed to not want to make a decision (seems a lot now defer to the ref completely even when right in front of him) but the penalty was a shocking decision to me. Saw some saying Robinson started the grappling, others said Edmundson did but both had hold of each other at different points. He clearly did not have a great view (his positioning was poor looking where he is stood) and reacted to the fall. You would give 20 penalties a game and you could slow down/show other incidents (both ways). Incredibly soft decision. Also, the lad Edmundson then seemed to raise his hands at least twice to Robinson and then Souza – surely that is a red card (look at Anel earlier in the season).

He seemed to love the boos and jeers as he went off with a stupid smirk on his face and his slicked back hair sponsored by brylcreem (other brands are available). I gave him a long old boo as he came off as Wilder told him what he thought. He almost doubled down on annoying the home fans as he gave more bizarre decisions second half. I am not saying he was completely against us all game (he gave us some fouls I thought were harsh compared to others let go). He let a few players commit multiple fouls and then booked Ayaz for a soft one (seemed to be another player – Hackney was it? – who made a number of fouls before that). The one positive is he did not give the one on Anel where I was convinced he would give it – it was not a foul in my opinion and the keeper just got outjumped but a lot would have given it. We do seem to win most of the game he does officiate but he rarely goes off without boos and criticism. That says something! Hope we do not see him for a while.

Crowd – Thought the crowd was appreciative of the efforts and way we attacked. Still bit quiet at times and I feel the crowd can do more (sorry to say it but Leeds fans are at it every week – maybe helped by them blowing teams away) and be more vocal. If we play like we did last night, the noise will go up and it will become more intimidating. Nice support for Wilder after the Boro chants at him. Boro always bring a good following even if it is always a night match at the Lane against them. They back their team and tried to keep with them but by the end the away end was half empty as their team had been well beaten. Had a phase 5 last night – felt like the old days. No sign of Mr Meadows though!

United – Finally, we see a convincing performance with a win. We had being achieving the latter but it had been a concern that for some time, we had limped over the line and got away with some really poor showings.

As an ex-pat I always appreciate your report Deadbat i watch every match on tv but always appreciate your in depth analysis (don’t always agree with ratings, but for the most part do)
Good work pal 💪🏼⚔️

Thanks Deadbeat, good comprehensive report. Much better performance all round.
On to Luton with their poor ground and playing surface as well as their land of the giants team, I have a sneaky feeling this could be a banana skin game for us.

Crazy low scores! 🤯

Agree on this occasion.

I'd have gone:

Cooper - 7
Not a lot to do, but made some good saves second half. Held onto a few shots and commanded his box well.

Clarke - 7.5
Underappreciated performance last night. Involved in a lot of our attacks and got up and down the flank well.
Almost a lovely assist for O'Hare after some nice interchange between them.

Anel - 7
Not a great deal to do defensively. An extra 0.5 mark for the goal.

Robinson - 6
As above in terms of defensive duties, loses 0.5 mark for the extremely dubious penalty giveaway (harsh).

Burrows - 5.5
OK defensively, but has to be better with his deliveries and offer more in attack.

Souza - 8
Back to his best. Seemed to be sweeping up all over the park last night. Gave us a really solid platform.
What I like about Souza is he doesn't just sit deep. He pushes us up the field and makes challenges higher up the pitch.
Kept it simple in possession.

Peck - 8.5
My MOTM. Dominated a really good midfield. Superb assist. Gave us energy and ball advancement which we've been lacking.
The Sheffield Charva. Needs a much better chant now he's entering cult hero territory.

Rak-Sakyi - 7.5
Probably an 8.5 first half, but understandably faded in the second.
Scored another crucial goal and far more involved in general play.
Encouraging combo with Clarke offering an overlapping option which he didn't have with Gilchrist.

O'Hare - 8.5
Absolutely superb showing.
If he'd buried one of the chances it would have been a rare 9/10 for me.
Great workrate and quality with the ball. Should have had a penalty and an assist if Campbell had buried.

Hamer - 8.5
At times, he looks ridiculous at this level. One of those nights where all of his trickery seemed to come off.
The heartbeat of this team.
We really need him to avoid getting a 3 match ban. I'm shocked he didn't get carded last night.

Cannon - 5.
Watching back on the highlights, he does make some good little runs. His movement isn't always picked up.
One such instance, Hamer beats his man, cuts in off the left, Cannon peels away from his marker looking for a slip pass but Hamer goes for the far corner curler.
Unfortunately for Cannon ...

Subs:
Campbell - 7.
... Campbell showed what we were missing when he joined the fray. Far more link up and dangerous movement. Loses a whole mark for not squaring it to BBD.

Brereton-Diaz - 7.5.
Great goal and should've had a second (see above). Decent showing.

McCallum, Choudhury, T Davies - too little time to have a big impact, but McCallum deserves a shot at Luton in my opinion.
Burrows looks like he could use a rest and we should utilise our squad.

I appreciate Deadbat 's approach of a 5 being good, as you should be, the standard for a player, but I do think a couple were a bit low on this occasion. I would genuinely have given Hamer and Peck 9 each. Both superb. But it is, as they say "all abart opinions."

Cheers as ever for the report DB.

I thought Robinson was dreadful last night
Only time they looked like scoring was running in straight lines at him

Not gonna be too harsh on him for the penalty be aue him and Anel do it every set piece we defend because they aren't strong enough

Wonder what happened to Mr. Meadows? Must have taken the early Police retirement offer

Very harsh, he was OK last night and the penalty decision was disgraceful

Crazy low scores! 🤯
Riley Roberts from The Pinch says hold my beer!

Only kidding but here is his ratings. Always good to see a different take.

Blades 3-1 Boro

Michael Cooper – 5

Had little to do. Conceded a goal and made one good save but untested outside of that.

Harry Clarke – 5

Had a better time than v Pompey all around. Had a dodgy moment with a weak clearance not long before their goal.

Anel Ahmedhodzic – 8

Feels a bit unpopular with all the love for the forwards but probably my MOTM. Was rock solid and added a goal.

Jack Robinson – 6

Not going to be too harsh for giving away a pretty soft pen. Played one beautiful switch (and one awful one) and made a pretty good defensive intervention to cut out a cross.

Harrison Burrows – 6

A threat from both open play and the corner flag. Happy with that.

Vini Souza – 7

Good performance. Won a lot in the middle of the park and displayed some silky skills.

Sydie Peck – 7

Had a few opportunities where he could’ve done better in front of goal but was a big part of our improved-looking quick attacking play. That pass to BBD for the 2nd goal was delightful.

Jesurun Rak-Sakyi – 8

Looked so up for it. Spent the first half attempting to beat anyone who came near him. Buzzing to see him playing so well.

Gustavo Hamer – 8

Some of the most outrageous displays of “I’m too good for this” in the Championship this season.

Callum O’Hare – 7

Had some brilliant moments. Still frustrating in the sense that any time he got time on the ball he was caught up or lost it and was very fortunate with the first goal. One of his better games for sure though as we attacked with more intensity which suited him. 6.5. Rounded up

Tom Cannon – 4

Unable to have any impact on the game. Disappointing.

Subs:

Tyrese Campbell - 4

He was better than Cannon but honestly, a 4 might be generous after that chance he messed up. He’ll be counting his blessings tonight after that error was rendered meaningless.

Ben Brereton-Diaz – 6

Lovely finish after a not-so-great touch.

Average rating – 6.23

O'hare was the difference. Hamer and COH both play better when each other is in the team. COH is the glue that holds the 4-2-3-1 formation together. With him in the team we have an outball from defence as he makes Duffyesque type runs between the lines. We also get up the pitch much quicker. Add in JRS pace and the 3 behind the lone striker completely bamboozled Boro's defence time after time. COH's phenomenal duracell bunny work rate sets him above the majority of other other players in the league. Yes he could be a better finisher but as others have remarked he would probably be playing in the EPL now if he was. First name on the team sheet along with Hamer for me for the rest of the season simply because we look like an automatic promotion side more often than not when he's on the pitch.

Agree about Burrows he needs a Peck like rest. We finally scored from a corner, our set pieces before were of poor quality. One mark more for Campbell (who added a lot to our movement up top) and COH for me who was my MOM.

Boro played into our hands trying to out football us. Pompey and Dull pressed us high and we struggle with hoof ball and pace. Both are coming up in the next 2 games, Luton for hoofwaffen and Weeds for pace. It will be interesting to see how we line up. Manager post match said he would use the squad for the next few games but Campbell for Cannon and possibly McCallum for Burrows should be the only changes imo. Hamer may need to start on the bench if his hamstring/calf is an issue as we need him and the return of Seriki for the visit of Weeds.

As for Donoghue it must have hurt him to see us prevail despite him. When Anels goal went in he looked long and hard at the lino hoping he was going to raise his flag. Hope we've given him the lowest mark possible. Incompetent look at me fools like him are unfortunately revered by the PGMOL. No doubt he'll be getting EPL gigs soon.

6.5. Rounded up

So Cannon and Campbell get the same marks?? Campbell was much better and actually caused them problems

Careful, I got called lots of names last night for not giving everyone really high marks!

Doesnt seem a popular opinion but thought Vini Souza was superb and the motm for me. When he's on it, he bullies the opposition with ease at this level. Made comfy 4 or 5 interceptions when they were in good positions.

Thanks Deadbat always part of my post match ritual looking at your report! Just wondering if you tot your scores up at the end of the season to give each player an overall season mark along with a player of the season winner?

Best all round performance performance since the Blackburn away game . On the front foot , high tempo and aggressive , like day and night level of performance between the Pompey game and Weds night .
O’Hare MOTM match for me , ran himself into the ground , closely followed Hamer & Peck . Special mention for Souza who looked back at his best after injury .
Well done lads great performance & thst needs be the benchmark for the games ahead . UTB ⚔️

Watched the game on tv last night as I have been working away .

Much better performance but not brilliant - but much much better .

Agree with your ratings and comments re Burrows and Cannon in particular.

Also , perhaps controversial? I thought the Sky commentators- Goodman plus ? were excellent . Praised Utd accordingly and were insightful. Also , I thought the ref had a good game - let quite a lot go when you watch it back - thought it was a penalty tbh .

Hope we carry this on

Boro were awful

Super report and agree with you Deadbat

All very positive, but special mention for Peck, not just his impact throughout the season, but his approach. As you alluded to, he looks like he actually enjoys it all, which is so refreshing to see.

Great to see Tom Davies back too, he is the real deal, if he can stay fit, it will be huge.

Is this sarcastic?

Another comment on Donnaghue. Late on when when Campbell went through with the one on one with the keeper. O’Hare and Campbell got though the Boro defence and O’ Hare was blatantly pulled back but Campbell raced away so ref correctly played advantage. However in my view the Boro played who pulled Callum back should have at least had a yellow card and arguably a red when play was next stopped. Ref did nothing.

I normally do that in my end of season review and do the averages but normally miss a few games so not totally accurate.
