Sorry for the delay – got back late last night and work all day today….
----
After a series of unconvincing performances, the Blades put in their most complete performance for some time as they deservedly beat playoff contenders Middlesbrough at Bramall Lane. United were quick out of the blocks and swarmed all over Boro and finally got the goal their domination merited thanks to Jesurun Rak Sakyi applying the finish after Gus Hamer had fed Callum O’Hare. However, the visitors pegged United back after Matthew Donoghue’s incredibly harsh decision to penalise a shirt pull on Jack Robinson at a corner. Delano Burgzorg converted the penalty just before half time. United kept their composure and continued where they left off after the break to keep creating several chances. They finally got the second goal after sub–Ben Brereton Diaz superbly chipped Travers after Sydie Peck’s wonderful slide rule pass set him away. Anel Ahmedhodzic’s header sealed the seal and gave a more realistic gloss on the final scoreline.
Wilder shuffled his pack with Peck, O’Hare and Rak Sakyi in for Choudhury, Brereton Diaz and Campbell. Tom Davies was back on the bench. Kelechi Iheanacho was brought in to make his first start for a Boro side who had been inconsistent for much of the season, despite some impressive high scoring wins.
After such a lacklustre showing at the weekend, the Blades seemed determined to put in a better account of themselves and were on the front foot from the off. Hamer was looking in the mood as he got on the ball and was showing his full repertoire of skills. O’Hare was also busy and the football was being played at a fast tempo and Boro were struggling to hold United up. The first chance came when Rak Sakyi cut in and hit a low shot that Travers pushed away. The keeper then had to be alert to fist away an in-swinging corner. Hamer twice came away from his man and on the second occasion, his delightful nutmeg of Ayling saw him away and his curling effort was narrowly wide. Rak Sakyi had another effort saved as the domination continued. Peck and Souza were controlling midfield and Hamer was proving tough to hold up.
United finally took the lead and it was no surprise it came from more brilliance from Hamer. The midfielder ran away down the left and played in O’Hare. The midfielder made a bit of a mess of it and Giles got back but somehow the defender and Travers managed to botch clearing it away and it fell perfectly for RAK SAKYI to tap home. It was the second goal in consecutive games for the winger.
The home side continued to dominate and O’Hare’s energy was helping United keep Boro penned in and with threats from a number of areas, were looking in total control.
Boro had created nothing but a rare break saw Hackney steal in as Clarke gambled and his shot was saved from Cooper. Soon after they were level. Iheanacho looked offside in the move that led to a corner kick. As the ball came in both Robinson and Edmundson had hold of each other but somehow referee Matthew Donoghue opted that it was the United player that was the aggressor and pointed to the spot. The referee had had previous at Bramall Lane and the crowd let him have it after the bizarre award. Edmundson seemed to throw hands at both Robinson and Souza in the ensuing fracas but only received a yellow card; along with Robinson. After the protests and a delay, which saw Cooper booked, BURGZORG kept his composure.
The next few minutes became scrappy and United were unsettled for the final moments of the half with the fans venting at Donoghue as he called time and walked off to a cascade of boos.
United came out second half and had to make a change with Tom Cannon rolling his ankle and was replaced by Tyrese Campbell. The Blades tried to get back to causing Boro problems and O’Hare and Hamer continued to link well. O’Hare was nearly in and then another neat move involving Rak Sakyi saw the winger have a shot blocked. Iheanacho was flagged offside as he poked home and the visitors were at least having some attacks after barely getting in the home side’s half in the first half. However, O’Hare had a great chance after Clarke cleverly played him though but hit shot was blocked right in front of goal from van den Berg who probably denied a certain goal Barlaser came on for Ayaz.
Burrows had an effort blocked and Campbell then could not quite get his shot away. Peck then was the next to have a go. Brereton Diaz replaced Rak Sakyi with just over 20 minutes to play in a game that was more open than the first half but the Blades were still the better side and looking more likely.
Conway and Whittaker came on for Iling Junior ad Iheanacho but it was not long after when the breakthrough was made. Possession was surrended and Peck carried it on and played a delightful though ball that dissected the Boro defence. BRERETON DIAZ was in and took a touch before cooly chipping the keeper superbly. The Chilean celebrated in front of the Kop whilst the assisting player Peck jumped into the arms of the coaching staff on halfway.
Despite getting back in front, Boro did respond and Burgzorg twisted and turned in the box after the flag stayed down and Cooper had to get a vital touch to tip over. Hamer had to come off with his hamstring tightening, after he has received treatment twice in the game already. McCallum came on in his place. United had a great chance to seal it after Campbell and O’Hare robbed the Middlesbrough defender and suddenly they were in. Campbell bore down on goal but with Brereton Diaz clear to his right, he opted to go for goal and Travers made the block.
Boro came back down and Burgzorg had an effort at Cooper but United were able to win a corner t the other end and as the ball came in, AHMEDHODZIC outjumped Travers and headed home. The keeper looked at the referee more in hope than expectation that the decision would go his way but Donoghue finally got a big call right and it was 3-1 and the result was effectively sealed.
United managed the extra 5 minutes of stoppage time comfortably and could even have gone for another as Boro looked well beaten at this stage as the Blades saw it out with ease. It was another three points at the Lane, their second in a week, but this performance certainly would have left the supporters leaving the ground far more optimistic about their teams’ promotion chances.
