An awful week ended for United with a depressing defeat at home to Fleetwood seeing the Blades pick up one point from footballing giants Crawley, Peterborough and Fleetwood. Before the week United could still harbour serious hopes of a late automatic promotion bid. The Blades are facing an almighty struggle just to get into the end of season with eight teams within five points and battling for only two spots that are left.

It was another depressing performance that featured mistakes all over the field and slow, ponderous build up with little penetration, goal mouth action or any kind of entertainment. Few players left the game with any credit and serious questions are now being asked of Nigel Clough and his managerial team. The cup runs of last and this season now seem a long time ago as the harsh reality hits that unless the approach of the manager and players change; United will stay in the third tier for the fifth season.

The Blades began by giving a debut to new signing Steve Davies who partnered Matty Done. Jose Baxter was also back in the side with the injured Ryan Flynn and Marc McNulty giving way.

Fleetwood had enjoyed a decent first season at this level and started their first ever game at the Lane in confident manner knocking the ball about well. United did have the first chance but Davies headed well wide from a Murphy cross. A scramble saw Fleetwood clear with Baxter the nearest United man but the Blades had failed to test the keeper so far. Former Blade Jordan went off injured for the visitors. Baxter fired over before Morris nearly got in at the other end after mistakes from Harris and then McEveley.

Fleetwood had not offered much as a goal threat but were competing well and they were able to take the lead on 25 minutes. Some neat interchange saw Proctor play the ball over to the left. MORRIS was given time and space with Brayford not tight enough and hit a powerful rising drive that flashed past Turner. The keeper maybe should have done better at his near post but the defending in the build up was sloppy.

Basham was booked after a mistake from Brayford had led to Fleetwood breaking away. HAUGHTON hit the first free kick into the wall but as the ball came back to him; he was able to take a touch and then try a surprise shot from way out on the angle on the left wing. The ball seemed to bounce twice before deceiving Turner and going in again at his near post. It was an appalling mistake from the keeper who knew it straight away from his reaction.

The crowd voiced their displeasure as the ball was returned to the centre circle with some in the South Stand voicing their displeasure towards the chairman Kevin McCabe who was sat in the directors box.
United tried to get going and won a corner soon after. The corner was cleared but from the subsequent return ball from Murphy, Basham headed goalwards and the predatory DONE nodded home for the second time in a week. United were back in the game.

United though were making more mistakes and Harris again gave the ball away but Proctor was stopped by McEveley.

The half time whistle came soon after.

The second half saw Done go down maybe a little theatrically in the box as united tried to get back level but they had not tested Maxwell since pulling one back and the play continued to be slow and laborious.

Maxwell had been timewasting from the start of the game and this had got worse since Fleetwood had gone ahead and the referee had seen enough as he took his time over another goal kick. The referee decided to book him with still half an hour left to play.

Fleetwood were defending in numbers but were repelling United fairly comfortably.

United had struggled to create much and were relying on Murphy to create something. The winger had continued to look dangerous and beat two men before winning a corner. The same man then kinked into the box and had an appeal for a penalty but the referee waved it away.

Adams came on for Baxter who had given the ball away cheaply all game as United tried to find a spark but had created very little. One chance came when Murphy found Harris and his cross was headed back by Coutts but Doyle and McNulty seemed to get in each others way before the former hit a shot that Maxwell turned over.
McNulty and Wallace came on but the expected onslaught never materialised and a Done header tamely wide was as close as they got even with an additional six minutes stoppage time. The loud boos at the end showed what most of another healthy crowd felt of another unacceptable performance and result.

United
– Struggling for words to describe such a performance. We barely created anything – it was slow, plodding tempo. The players lacked energy, ability and desire. There was no urgency, little forward play, we did not get players into the box and never got to the by-line. It was really poor. We gave away two sloppy goals and could have given more away and even when we got one back; we then barely had an effort of note the whole second half. Players on probably double and triple the wage of their respective opponents served up a performance that suggested a side that will do well to even finish top 6. It really was dire. In a week we have seen a sign offer little to nothing in over 180 minutes of football and lost to two bang average, at best, sides who will not be anywhere near the promotion shake up at the end of the season I feel.

Clough stood there motionless much of the time; McCabe sat there stoically in the directors box and it is almost as if nobody has a clue to get this side out of this division. We are 23 points off the top team. 23 points! That is totally unacceptable and a long way off second. The season is kind of going the way it did 2 years ago when Wilson was jettisoned and they limped in the playoffs but were deservedly beaten. I see nothing in this side to suggest they will kick on, finish the season strongly and win at Wembley.

Do hope I am wrong but the performances continue to be wholly not good enough and nothing seems to be changing. They have given him funds but other than Done, the other players brought in have not really improved things. Brayford, Holt, Coutts and Freeman (done ok but he does not even see him a starter) have not made much impact. We will wait on Davies but he has wasted money on mostly average dross (Brayford will still come good I feel). The squad is littered with slow, weak players who cannot change games. I genuinely only feel half a dozen could even play at a higher level if they went up. So the players he has are not good enough for division above but not good enough to get us out of this division seemingly. Sure some will say we need to wait till the end of the season but we have been waiting all year for improvements and we ain’t seeing any. Take away that disastrous spell under Weir and are we any further forward than where we were when we finished that Wilson/Morgan season in terms of personnel, playing style or hopes for the future? Probably not in all cases. We seem to be just treading water but nowhere near getting to the side of the pool.

Be interesting to see what happens now. We go on and make the playoffs and have a real good go, then Clough will come back I am sure regardless but if we dip our or lose limply then sadly as I have said examinations in the summer of his recruitment, style of play and ultimately results will have to be asked. We have sacked managers (Blackwell, Wilson) when in positions like this. The merry go round does have to stop at some point but surely it stops when we find someone who can do the job. The choices continued to frustrate and it definitely a crossroads now for Clough.

Fleetwood –
A side that played a smattering of decent football, they competed well and defended in numbers. Sure they time wasted but so we would we in their position. Being honest though they were an ordinary side, akin to many that have come to the Lane this year and should have been dispatched 2 or 3-0. That was the same story at their place in December. The fact we have picked up a point against them sums up how poor we are and that is not an insult to them as they have done brilliantly to get to this level and be nearer the top than bottom too. However as someone said our ground holds more than the entire population of Fleetwood. Does not mean anything of course but still gives a flavour to the size of the respective clubs.

The left winger was decent, Morris as he was up at Highbury and scored a good goal. However they left experienced players like Crainey and Dobbie. One of their best players Sarcevic was missing too. He lad Roberts at the back is a strong leader and heads and clears (something we miss) as he did when he was at Stevenage.

Think they will end up around the middle of the league but that is some achievement and too win at a ground like the Lane will be a real feather. Sadly it is all too easy to do that these days and not the coup for sides that it used to be. Aleaxnder has done a good job though and they never seem to get stuffed and always seem well in games.

Turner 3/10 – I have not been convinced with him at all to be honest. Like with a few of the other players, there is a reason why he has had so many clubs (13 clubs –albeit most on loan) and he is still only 31 (still young for a keeper in some ways). I feel he has been slow down to shots and not really commanded for a big keeper. He was at fault for the goal at Crawley last week and today I felt he could have done a bit better on the first one (near post – gets beat hear quite a bit here). The second goal was just awful. Also why did he not have a cap on in the sun? He was shielding his eyes for the whole first half with his hand meaning he was then having to keep goal with one hand! Someone said he should have thrown his hat on the shot that went in for the second; if he had been wearing one! After this he did not have too much to do but in the key moments he let us down.

Brayford 4/10
– He was really poor again sadly. I still think he will be a good signing and can be a talisman due to his character and ability moving forward, but being honest if it had not been for his other spell at the club then a lot would have been furious for squandering big money on a full back that so far has looked average at best. Today the winger gave him a bit of a torrid time and also was not tight enough on his man and Morris gave him a really hard afternoon. His touch, passing and basic play was poor too. Going forward he did not create much. Heard he and Coutts linked up well at Derby but saw nothing of that today. Coutts lacks pace and does not look a winger and kind of congested that area. There was no space.

Harris 3/10
– A nightmare. He put in one decent cross second half but other than that I cannot think of much he did right. He truly was awful. Every touch got away from him, he gave it away, he lost his man and gave away cheap fouls. Maybe it did bobble a lot around him (pitch) but that is not excuse for him constantly losing the ball. Do recall having a debate on some of the forums about him when some fans were saying he was the best left back in the division and even though he had a good run of form, I had stated he was wildly inconsistent (another with numerous clubs for someone not that old) and was prone to good play mixed with bad play within games.

McEveley 5/10
– Another mistake strewn performance. He made a few tackles and interceptions and did get a bit better after the break but first half time and time he overplayed or lost the ball in key areas. His passing so often was short making it hard for the receiving player. Gave away usual daft free kicks too. Kennedy could stay fit then he would start ahead of him for me.

Basham 6/10 –
The best of a bad defence (just). He too was not totally convincing and at times lost his man when crosses came over. Did assist on the goal with a header. Second half we did not have much pressure put on us but both he and McEveley were so slow bringing the ball out.

Doyle 6/10
– I felt he did not have his best day today and he too was guilty of giving the ball away and never really controlling midfield. We had two midfielders without legs, height, mobility or pace today so if they did not win tackles, pick up loose play or keep the ball, then what did they offer? Very little. Felt Fleetwood were much better than us in this area even though we should have enough experience and ability to control it.

Coutts 3/10
– Have to say I keep hearing some fans saying he is a proper footballer and a decent player but I have seen absolutely nothing from him. He looks awful to me. A player that plays it safe whenever he has it (backwards and sideways), cannot beat a man (trickery or pace), his passing is poor and his touch is not good either. He is also very weak and badly unfit. Another bang average-poor signing that does not improve the team and just adds to a huge squad filled with ordinary journeymen with a lot that can never stay fit. How he stayed on the full game I do not know. His legs seem to have gone to me and like Wallace we may have signed another that will probably not be in league football in a few seasons.

Baxter 4/10
– He did play a few decent cross field balls out and had one run and shot but for the most part he was poor. He gave the ball away really cheaply and never chased back when he lost it. For someone that is supposed to be technically decent he loses it as much as keeps it and often goes sideways rather than forwards with his passing. Came off after a run of giving the ball away second half. Another that for me is not good enough (shows flashes but not enough). He has played lots of positions now and never convinced consistently in any. A player that has some talent but will end up playing most of his football at this level and lower I am afraid unless he wakes himself up and fast – I certainly think he may not be at United longer than another season at most and would not be upset if he moved on at the end of the season.

Murphy 7.5/10
- Our best player by a county mile. First half had a few crosses and runs but was quiet-ish. Came inside too much and got crowded out. Second half he was excellent as he took the ball on and beat men and the only one trying to get to the byline. They doubled up on him but he still looked a threat winning corners or drawing pressure. Lovely balanced footballer who needs some help from others or teams will just shut him out knowing we have little else.

Done 7/10
– Worked hard with little service. Got another poachers goal and was able to be involved in most other of the few decent attacks we had. He does get caught offside too much but overall I think if he gets service he will score goals. Sadly he is having to score goals/make chances off scraps.

Davies 6.5/10 –
Some tidy bits and pieces in terms of some hold up and flicks etc but also some sloppy play too. Came back towards midfield too much for me but maybe had to come and look for the ball but did not get close enough to Done. However he too had little service. Looks a neat and tidy player but not quite as imposing in terms of height/physical presence as I felt he would be (and we need).

Subs-

Adams
– Brought on to give the side a bit of life. Did have a few runs but in a poor game struggled to get into the game but this was the same for many. Would like to see him have a run of games. Surely he would offer more than Coutts down the side. Also would he be worth a go up front after his finishes v Spurs.

McNulty
– Dropped after a poor game in the week. His career seems to be stop start. I do feel it must be hard if he does not get a run of games but equally he has not grabbed his chance always when he has had it and been inconsistent. The game against Southampton where he was brilliant should have been the springboard for him but he has not gone on, despite getting some goals and needs to improve when he starts games.

Wallace
– No idea why he was brought on. We needed to try something different and bringing on another ordinary midfielder who offers little from an attacking sense was just bizarre. The free kick he took at the end I was speechless as he kicked the floor and kicked the ball about three yards. Was Freeman injured as he has gone from doing well to not even being on the bench? Wallace is another player that I have seen nothing to suggest he will ever become a regular at even League One level. Ditto for McGahey, Holt and several others he has brought in. Sure some people will say it is harsh and they could develop – they could – but are these players any better than the likes of Di Maio or Calvert Lewin – our own players coming through? Adams has shown some flashes at least but the others?

Manager rating –

Clough 2/10 –
Two wholly unacceptable performances and results. He blames injuries (garbage – look at size of the squad); the pitch, too many games (see first point) and anything but himself. It is his team/squad and he picks these players who keep making mistakes. He sets us up wrong and in a negative manner and not looking a goal threat and has us playing at such a slow tempo every game. The excuses are running out. I really want it work for him. He seems a decent, hard working guy but the cup runs have papered over the reality; that for the most part; certainly this season, the performances and results have not been good enough. There have been countless games like the Fleetwood one and things do not seem to change. He seems unable to change. I do not think for one moment the board will do anything this season (anyone thinking different whatever reasons why need to realise that unless they go on a calamitous run – say 5 or 6 straight defeats or something) then he will stay. However they did sack Wilson when we were in the same position a few years ago. If we do not make the playoffs then questions may have to be considered in the summer of course. Equally if as I expect whatever happens, then the start of next season will be huge for Clough. A poor start and poor recruitment again and the vultures will be rightly circling. I don’t want to keep getting rid of managers but don’t think it is a knee jerk to ask questions of him currently as it is not happening. He had a decent budget, a large squad and bigger resources than most but we are a long way off where we should be in terms of points, position and performances. It is a big few months for him now and he has to look at himself and stop blaming everything else.

Officials
– Thought he was fine and to be honest although being fair he actually favoured us if anything with a few 50/50’s going to us and he missed a fouls they could have had. Alexander was going berserk in the first half after he missed two obvious fouls on them. The penalty incidents, he definitely got the Done one right but the McNulty one less sure and I have seen them given. He penalised the keeper fairly early for time wasting and most of the bookings he got right. The officials have been poor this season but don’t have any issues with them today. Certainly not a reason for our defeat in any way.

Crowd
– Another good crowd considering the garbage served up. Fleetwood brought maybe 3-400 fans at best.Crowd again I felt were incredibly patient and the boos/groans could have been much louder. The announcer was entertaining to say the least and him reading the score out at the end like we did not know was something to add to the comedy value of how bad it is.

Heard some points on forums blaming the fans to some degree for the perceived over critical reactions at games/post games but I am sorry but that is utter b****x to me. Our fans have been incredibly patient, loyal and supportive for the last 7 or 8 seasons when they have paid good money home and away to watch utter rubbish for the most part. The season ticket sales next year if they fail to somehow rouse themselves and have a proper go at the end of this season; will see a huge fall and crowds of 12-13,000 next season will become common place again. Heard a lot near me saying they ain’t going next season and this season is the final straw. I know a lot say that and still go but I do feel many are quite determined not to go anymore every week.

Cheers Deadbat, depressing times but you hit the nail on the head here for me..

Cheers Deadbat. Can't disagree with any of that. Our support this season has been fantastic, outstanding even, to think that will be reduced significantly next season unless things change.

Yesterday was as dismal as I can remember. Fleetwood in front of their 200 fans won in a canter.

Unacceptable

I know we are watching rubbish at the moment but I have to say the last two matches our support has been woeful. Very flat and no noise except for one or two occasional chants.
We are moaning about our players not looking interested but surely one of our advantages has been the noise we've made at home.
Perhaps we as a whole have to step up too and make a noise. Let's make it intimidating for away teams.

Thought Davies was the only player on the pitch who looked like a footballer to me. First touch was good and his hold up play decent as well. The fact no one was near enough to take the ball from him and there was more movement in my pants than on the pitch isn't his fault.

Ih and Baxter was the worst outfield player on the pitch by a country mile to me. Truly awful. 1/10 for putting his shirt on the right way round and thats your lot.

Baxter's confidence is either shot, or he wants away. Agree that Davies looks promising. Che had a go when he came on. Done didn't tear about the pitch as he normally does, but still scored, and if Davies hadn't sky'd (sic) his cross in the first half Done looked well placed to finish.

If the team are knackered why not make use of the squad, as NC did against Swindon ?

Is Scougs injured ?

Based on the last two home performances, the players do NOT deserve support and should be collectively ashamed ..... they should hang their heads and offer unconditional apologies to the long suffering supporters of this Club.

The last two home "performances" have been just two in a series of appalling home performances and the players need to be told that it is simply UNACCEPTABLE at THIS football Club. No excuses from them ..... we were shite !!

The problem with our "squad" at the moment is that the best of it were all out there on Saturday, perhaps with the exception of Howard. There is nobody else to change, who would improve .......

Yes, Scougal is injured and he would have had NO impact on the games, since he hasn't done so all this season.

Considering the resources available to Clough this week has for me become one of the lowest points since the early 80's. A bad time to be failing if ever there was one even Rotherham are light years ahead of us locally never mind our porcine neighbours who now debt free and can push on to be the top dog around here for years to come. We really are a joke of a club in every department just when you thought it couldn't get any worse after the Ched Evans farce we now can't even beat the likes of Crawley and Fleetwood (no disrespect to them) who survive on pityfull resources compared to us.
Deeply depressing times to be a Blades fan. :(:(:(:(:(

Disagree. I think the fans deserve credit for showing incredible patience given the disgraceful and unacceptable rubbish being served up by Clough and the players.

Is that you Nigel?

Didn't see their second goal yesterday. Just seen it now.

How the fuck has he scored from there? What the hell was Turner doing?

Agree with Deadbat on the ref. Thought he was as good as we've seen this season.

Let a lot go and didn't fall for the usual throwing themselves to the floor (both teams) and time wasting shit (them, in spades).
Would be good to see him in charge of a decent game as he gave everyone a chance to play.

At times DB I think you've been overly critical (I know you don't see many away games, where we've played much better than at home) but this was as good a piece of journalism as I have seen on the current state of the Blades and the hapless Chough.

I just pray for the trigger to be pulled sooner rather than later , and we get a modern young dynamic manager who embraces new methods and ideas.
Or a time proven manager who actually knows what he is doing.

The merry go round does have to stop at some point but surely it stops when we find someone who can do the job.

This is pretty much my feelings. The argument that chopping and changing managers is intrinsically bad just does not hold water if we are consistently spending lots of money to make no progress. There must be a base-line of achievement made clear to every SUFC manager at this level. Take us up or goodbye.

Wasn't that what Weir was supposed to be? Nice new backroom set-up, different formation etc.

I don't think changing at this stage would do us any favours whatsoever. It would probably be even more of an error that ditching Wilson when we did was.

Spot on Deadbat.

The reality is Clough has 8 weeks to sort the side out.

There are certainly a few sides below us that are relishing the next couple of months. If we don't cut out the mistakes and alter our attitude to attacking games, we will fail.

In an ideal world I'd like Clough to be given time but the style of play has gone downhill so quickly that it's hard to defend him at the moment.

It's a similar level to how we were under Weir.

I have to say the 'similar to Weir' bit struck me as I was leaving after the Fleetwood game. Both Peterbro & Fleetwood were reminiscent of those dark days. It was more the body language of the players rather than the style that gave me that horrible thought, and that is far worse than any other foible we might be displaying lately.
An alarming capitulation has taken place this past two games and I feel this could continue until we drift out of play off contention.
We can only hope the mood of the players improves and a return of one or two to the squad beckons a return to what style we know best - 451 with Davies up top and Done somewhere just behind. Alas, I think I'm straw clutching here........ where's my medication....

Only if the definition of modern and dynamic is 43 year old and embracing new ideas included pulling 11 men back for an opposition corner when losing in the last 5 minutes.

I was thinking more of a Lee Johnson type.
Now that could have been an interesting appointment!

On our current level of performance we have some really nasty fixtures coming up against some sides who are fast improving. I can't see the fans and the board sticking by Chough if we lose too many of them .
As DB says, I think the plays off is going to be very difficult.

I think the best time to achieve continuity of management is when we have the right manager, not now.

Yeh, Lee Johnson, interesting suggestion. Not much to go on experience wise, a hunch, gamble, or whatever one may want to label it. But are United prepared for such a thrust into the unknown. Weir was that thrust, and we quickly withdrew before the climax (4th tier!)
Johnson has began well at Barnsley and appears to have something about him. Time will tell, but if we were to play them tomorrow, I know who my money would be on.

If we're talking about potential next managers, I give you my choice:

Sorry maidmarion, but even Clough hasn't added 'poor support' to his litany of excuses. Yet. It's a 'feed one to feed the other' scenario. The fans have paid their money - often over a number of years - and it is up to the players to offer anything to enthuse us. We don't even ask for entertainment! If we did, most would have pissed off months ago.

One thing I don't agree with is booing the team. Amazingly we have very little of this and it's just borne of frustration. But again, booing just gives the likes of Clough another reason ('players are frightened at Bramall Lane' bollox) to deflect attention from himself.

And no fat pay-off as a reward for utter failure.

Not at all. I think giving the job to a guy who has some fucking experience of being a manager would have helped. Also a decent track record of some kind of success.

Weir failed the first test. Clough definitely fails the second.

LJ played most of his football, in the 2nd 3rd tier, 2 yrs manager in L1 and his dad has been a manager in lower leagues for 30 years.
You'd think he may have learnt a few things along the way.
DW had no experience of L1 no managerial experience and just a year with Everton academy/reserves.
Which has the best chance of succeeding?
