To be honest I am very tired and cannot be bothered to do a full report after that garbage tonight. So, my report will be condensed into a short paragraph and match ratings.

We started well and Robinson had a good effort saved; we had another few decent moments with Mousset and Robinson looking lively early on. Their keeper dithered a few times and we had a few shots blocked or go just awry. Then they broke out and after a ball was not cleared, two players sold themselves and Power hit a great shot that Moore could only help into the net. After this we did absolutely nothing of note. We had no control of midfield, did not have any shots at goal and they won easily. 2nd half we did nothing until a late Clarke shot was pulled wide. I cannot recall them being troubled at all. They did not attack much but still hit the post and still looked more dangerous than us even on the break. I felt the front two did ok but then they went off (our best two players). The rest of the team were really poor – Besic did a few nice things but he was certainly not man of the match and Freeman had a decent 2nd half going forward but the rest of them. Stearman, Bryan and Jagielka were full stretch and horrific in possession. Morrison barely broke into a sprint and did not affect the game. Some of these are bit part players and most on loan/one-year deals or not going to be here by the end of the season I feel as have shown they are not good enough. I was disappointed by Freeman (L) and Osborn. These two cost us around 10 million pounds and both looked really poor.

Sunderland fought harder but also played better football when they had it. We simply cannot handle so many changes. We chucked on McBurnie and Fleck (and Clarke!) but it was too late. The team had no pattern, pace or urgency. Everything was done slowly and no body took control either by running with the ball or speeding up the tempo. The game just drifted away and before you knew it was stoppage time. The referee made some peculiar decisions but even he cannot be apportioned blame for a frankly embarrassing showing from a team of senior pros against a Sunderland team that were also missing several first teamers. Our team had players in it that cost millions but they looked disinterested on the whole and got what they deserved. Wilder will be wanting to bring in some quality backups when we get to January as most of these (front two apart) look well off being Premier League players and it would be a major concern if we got a raft of injuries.

Ratings:

Moore 5/10 – Shaky throughout really. So many crosses came in that he just left or watched. He did not communicate with his defence and then on the goal felt it was not right in the corner or hit that hard but he pushed it into the net. He does not command at all.

Freeman 5.5/10 – Got skinned a few times but he actually looked more bothered than some and did get down the right and put a few crosses in second half. Looked frustrated that he had no movement in front of him.

Osborn 4/10 – I thought he was poor. His touch and passing was off and he took too long to do things often getting robbed off the ball. He is not a left wing back at all. He may come on and play as a defensive midfielder or offer protection on the left if we are leading but he is only going to be a fill in type -a lot of money (5 million) for a player that may only play 2 or 3 minutes now and again when we are seeing games out. I have been quite disappointed with him technically in the two cup games.

Bryan 2/10 – Utterly abject. Technically he is woeful but I am not sure what he does well? I counted 2 things he did right all game out of around 20 bits of play. He cannot head it, cannot control the ball and struggles to make a simple pass. Has no idea of what is going on around him. In the end he just went backwards as his confidence was so shot. He took at least 2 minutes out of the game with his delays on throw ins. He needs moving on as he is not up to it at this level and not even close.

Stearman 4/10 – Spent most of the game grappling with Wyke and lost most headers and first balls. Always at full stretch. He looked so slow and was also ponderous in possession. The terrible and ridiculous shot at the end summed up his night.

Jagielka 4/10 – As above. Looked to be lunging in all the time and no calmness or poise. When he got it, he just kicked it long. Time after time he did this and then at the end just kicked it out for a corner under no pressure. He had done this first half too.

Morrison 4/10 – A few neat touches apart the game completely passed him by. He was never in it all and then when he got it, his passing was overhit or too slow. He did not penetrate; his set plays were poor and then as the game went on looked like he could not be bothered. Not sure what his best position is, he ended up defensive midfield but never got hold of the ball.

Besic 4.5/10 – Gets 4.5 for two decent passes through. One at the beginning where he nearly got Mousset in and then he did get Clarke in with a neat reverse ball. Outside of this his touch always saw the ball shoot off, he sat himself to ground too much and was not able to control play at all. Not worked him out yet as he is not big enough to be an enforcer but not mobile enough to chase back. Bit of a waste of a loan for me when you only get 2 from fellow Prem League teams.

K. Freeman 4/10 – One of the most disappointing players of the night in the sense he should stamp his authority on the game. Spent large chunks of the game arguing about where he should be playing with the bench. When he had it, he took too long and got robbed. Some telegraphed passes and did not run at the Sunderland team. We did not have any series of passes in midfield that went forward – it was all slow and square/behind. Defensively they also got ran past; as shown on the goal.

Robinson 6/10 – Thought he did ok and had one great effort and another run and cross. He at least tried to get involved early but as the game went on, he saw less of the ball and faded badly. He does not have much out and out pace and seems to prefer the ball to feet rather than to run onto.

Mousset 6/10 – As above. He at least looked lively with a few flicks and touches but not much did come off and he became frustrated at us just punting it forward and/or not playing through midfield.

Subs –

McBurnie – At least got involved and had a few really good crosses in but no one was on the end. He had a header cleared and at least we had a nuisance factor up there but ended up playing wider.

Clarke – Abysmal. He lost it time after time, failed to play in people when he had it and then missed a good chance. To say he looked ring rusty is an understatement. With January’s transfer window I am sure he will move on and that will be the last we see of him in a red and white shirt.

Fleck – Livened things up and at least carried the ball rather than three stationery, slow and predictable midfielders we had before – even he overrun it or made poor choices and then a stupid booking too.

Ref – Rubbish – missed fouls, played on at the wrong times and then seemed to be looking at his assistants to help him – these two were equally bad.

Crowd – Flat and bored but you could not blame them. Sunderland fans were very noisy – fair play to them.

Cheers mate. You've put more effort in there in writing that than it sounds like some of the players did on the pitch.

Where you put K Freeman did you mean L Freeman? Your earlier Freeman comments looked like a right wing back and so that presumably was Kieron.

Not sure, it also said ‘looked more bothered than others’ so that’d rule out K Freeman

Drop those players who you gave above 5 to, down to 5 and you’ve nigh on nailed my view.

Cheers Deadbat for the report.
Awful game, awful performance. I thought the way Ravel played that maybe he thought we were leading 5-0 after the first leg.

Not blaming the crowd at all, but I do think it has been a mistake to close the kop. Think the club should look at that as it has been completely devoid of any atmosphere for both League Cup games. Obviously the players have to give us something to excite us too.

Random observation - if that was Leon’s final game for us, it’s a sad way to sign off.

Exactly how I saw it. We were abject. Well down there with many of the worst performances over the years, just not recent years.

They were no great shakes. Looked surprisingly limited actually. But they battled harder and looked under no pressure at all. Credit to them for sticking it out.

The first ten minutes it looked like we would walk it. All our best play and chances were in this period. Mousset and Robinson both looked dangerous.

They scored a wonder goal the first time they were in our half after Stearman bafflingly managed to head a normal punt out for a corner when he was on the edge of out box.

Then the problems became apparent. We set up as a three in central defence, but not one of them stepped over the halfway line. No overloads, no support. You've got Freeman out wide with Morrison deepish close to him but no understanding between them and nothing happened on the other flank either. We get forced out wide with no overload on and we're suddenly getting done to us what we did to Everton at the weekend. The crossing was abysmal, the strikers had no service. Mostly we tried to play it in the channels for Robinson and Mousset.

Besic is not a good player by any stretch. His passings isn't good and he doesn't drive forwards. Morrison played deep without influencing the game. Freeman in the ten role went on some dribbles and went nowhere.

The second half Wilder swaps to four at the back with Bryan in the left back role which only exposes his failings deeper. He will get binned off after this game and never reappear but will presumably stay on because I can't see how any professional team would take him. A terrible player. When he gets the hook Osborn slots in and tries to play the marauding left back role instead but it doesn't work because he's Bobby Ford.

Neither Robsinson nor Mousset touched it in the second half but it wasn't their fault. I can see the point of saving their legs and taking them off. McBurnie did ok when he came on.

We suddenly look really thin in midfield. Besic is poor, Morrison isn't going to work unless he is in the ten role and he is never getting in front of McGoldrick or Freeman. Non of our second string defence look in any way adequate replacements for what we have, let alone challange or places except possibly K Freeman (who played ok and tried hard, looked understandably angry at what was ging on around him).

Special mention for the worst refereeing performance in the history of the game.

Thankyou for taking the time to write this report, you have put more effort into tonight then any of the players did. So nice one! Your report was spot on!

Cheers for the report. I had to make do with a phone feed so it was hard to see what was going on, but anyone could tell we had little cohesion, and didn't retain possession. It was srappy and frustrating.

Still, we probably had more possession than them, and the result could easily have been different. Thought Moore had little chance with what was an unexpected, powerful strike - though you can't help wondering if Hendo would have saved it. Shame we went out as I thought we might have a decent chance of winning it if we got to the latter stages.

Next season offer 300 loyalty points and open the kop.

Its blatantly obvious with other results of prem clubs failures no team can be cohesive when mass changes are adopted.
Teams especially one like ours are built on understanding each others roles. The selection tonight reminded me of amateur football days . Meeting at manor top ifor a sunday league game only 7 turning up and asking passers by if they've got any boots to join in

Most fans are well pleased with our 8 points but most are not certain whether we are good enough for the full season.

That's par for the course after 3 holes, using the golfing analogy.

Luck, injuries, referees and fans will all play a major part and affect our manager's best efforts.

Anybody would admit our cup game players have not demonstrated much pressure on the first 8 or so on the team sheet. The other 3 are jst settling in too. All par for the course.

I think its also par for the course for newly peomoted clubs to sacrifice this cup to avoid injuries. We cant afford to lose key players in this joke of a competition scorned on by the majority. We all know one of the top 6 will win it to justify their massive over spending so what's the point of trying. Its weighted in their favour ad they get byes to the later rounds

I didn’t get Ravel Morrison at all last night, you watch these YouTube videos of him beating 3/4 players. All he wants to do is pick the ball up from the back 4 and pass it sideways, I can’t remember him trying to beat his man all game or take any risks. At one point we had a back 6 with him and Besic literally on Jags/ Stearmans toes.

Sounds almost as bad as Barnet. This game will have shown Wilder about who he can rely on later into the season. So we probably need some to get our chequebook out in Jan then.

Personally I thought Osborn was our best player in the 2nd half, he seemed to be playing more centrally with Bryan getting wider. I thought he got really stuck in and put in a good shift. Can't fault your other ratings though.
Same here , I thought Osborne and Besic at least looked like they turned up ,Osbourne looked far better when he didn't have to babysit bryan anymore. K Freeman ,Clarke and Bryan have to be moved on in January and replaced with better.

There is something depressing about these throwaway games with 10 team changes. Clearly from other results it is not just United. Somehow the players get into a collective sulk and blame each other. I would expect many to perform so much better when getting their chance slotting into a prem match. We can belly ache all we like but it is what iit is and hard to draw too many conclusions from these games. For me the biggest shame is Morrison and he looks like going down his usual path despite starting the season sounding as if he was up for it this time, not assisted by expecting him to perform miracles in games like these. There is something about the dynamic of the squad that doesn't work in the obvious ' take your chance to shine' way and I reckon this playing a whole team of second stringers takes us back not forwards.

Was there and half wishing I wasn't. Thought Osborn was better than a 4. He was looking for the ball 2nd half and at least tried to make something happen. Also not defending Bryan but on the throw-ins, someone has to give him an option and they weren't.

Personally I thought Osborn was our best player in the 2nd half, he seemed to be playing more centrally with Bryan getting wider. I thought he got really stuck in and put in a good shift. Can't fault your other ratings though.

Was about to comment similar - thought Osborn was our standout player. Most importantly, he appeared to be the only player who was putting in a shift.

It's fookin hard to play WB in our system if the midfielder's aren't shifting laterally to offer support and that didn't happen last night until Fleck came on.

Special mention must go to the Freeman brothers last night who I felt were in a competition to see who could play the shittest...

My over-riding thought after last night was to be confused as to why we let Cranie and Coutts walk as neither Besic or Stearman/Jags/Bryan offer anything they couldn't....

The players were bad but the referee was shocking. The Linesman on the Family Stand side gave nothing he kept looking at the referee all the time for the decision even when it was right in front of him 2 metres away.

Sunderland dived and fell all over the place and the ref gave it them it was almost like Sunderland and the Ref were in cahoots it was that bad. One example cant remember who Robinson I think running forward in attack 3 of their defenders in front one Sunderland player clips his heels he goes down and ref waves play on. Why on earth would an attacker fall down like that unless he was under pressure from the defender behind and got clipped.

Another was the rule where players being substituted go to the nearest line never happened.

It was a League one side - Sunderland watching a SUFC League 2 side being helped to be beaten by the ref.

No effect on the result ,but the lineman on John street was hilariously bad ,one offside he didn't give when it was 2 yards away was unreal ,he just looked like some dithering old twat they had dragged out of the stand.
The night wasn't a total disaster ,had a nice curry in Everest ,lemon/cashew rice goes beautifully with a curry.

There was sufficient quality on the pitch last night to have won against the 2nd string of a middling L1 side.

We should now have sufficient squad depth to carry on in a cup competition that comes around once every three weeks without jeopardising our PL status. Also giving fringe players much needed game time.

Last night was a perfect opportunity for certain players to push themselves into contention. Visibly be seen to be busting s bollock to get into the PL spotlight.

It was also a perfect opportunity for certain forwards to dip their bread against defenders a level or two below what they usually face. I wanted to see them bully them and show the difference in quality.

Near enough all the players that were brought into the club to strengthen us featured last night. Some of the other PL teams played proper inexperienced players this week.

All in all, it was a shit show; does it mean anything for the rest of the season? Yes & No. It should probably represent the last games in Utd shirts for 2 players, put a question mark over the short term future of a further 3 and raise eyebrows over whether another 2 can make the required step up in the positions that they’ve bought to play in.

As Johnny Nash once sang ‘there are more questions than answers’ from last night.

It was a poor performance but not sure I agree completely about a lack of effort - I thought most tried it's just that nothing they did worked. It felt largely attributable to a bunch of players who don't play together regularly and haven't been getting games.
Ok - I'll give you Morrison - he seemed to turn off quite a bit. Besic - nice tidy player, would be interesting to see him with better players. Kean Bryan - either he hasn't played much and is some way from match fitness or he's poor.
