This doesn't sound like the game I saw yesterday!

Two teams fighting for the ball, moving to receive it, one-touch passes, anticipation, lots of movement, and a 1-0 scoreline.

Oh, wait a minute, it WASN'T the game I saw. That was Birmingham and Swansea.
Then I watched United and they displayed none of the above.

Thanks for another great report Deadbat hopefully these are somewhat cathartic!

“Spineless set of losers” pretty much nails it, what a bunch to be in a relegation scrap with, devoid of any shame or passion and guts.

The recent recruitment looks shocking, Tanganga aside who anyone could see was a decent Championship defender. Not much to be cheery about but surely things can only improve. 🙏🏻🤞
When you sign useless twats from luton! Who were relegated, there's only one way it's going to end! Fckg recruitment my arse!!

My report is that McGuinness is a donkey..Matsos is a headless chicken..Godfrey...has broad shoulders...Soumare feels the cold....Barry looks like lost kid at a busy bus station..Chong is food for a football pickpocket.

None of the above would have been on Wilders shopping list.....except Tanganga and he is not in the above list.

Those are the cards Wilder has been dealt..lot of Husseys there.
sure we were after godfrey under wilder.

He also spent a reported 10m on cannom, whos worse than all the above.

First and foremost we need to stop losing.
It isn’t going to be pretty but we now need to set up as a counter attack team.
Who's got the pace for that?
[/QUOTE]
Ogbene and Campbell if we play him through. Campbell is not a holding number 9 and never has been.

Campbell seems to be carrying some extra timber and I wonder if that's affecting is movement on the pitch.

We entered the game with a sense of cautious optimism from the fans with hope that the return of Wilder would be the catalyst to get the players motivated to put in a performance that they should be capable of.

I thought we looked slightly more organised as a team but did not have any cutting edge or threat going forward.

Cooper made a couple of decent saves and I dont think he could have done much with the goal, other than what he did (trying to make himself big across the goal).

Godfrey at least got closer to their winger but was still given a difficult time of it and offered nothing going forward.
Tanganga was our best defender and did try to bring the ball out and was generally solid with one or two slight mistakes.
McGuinness was average and doesnt use his size/height enough. WOuld not be in my starting line up.
Burrows was better than previous games and did get forward when he could but the final ball from his was aweful.
Matos started reasonably well and got a few tackles/interceptions in but does not progress the ball forwards and his passing range is limited. Became anonymous as the game went on.
Peck was probably our best player and did want to get involved to the end. His shooting is atrocious though. Maintained an energetic display without ever really creating anything.
Hamer again looked slightly better than in previous weeks but again was very wasteful with the ball. A lot of sloppy passes and little in the way of hurting the opposition.
O'Hare was terrible. every pass he received was returned to a player in a less advanced position. He never turned and tried to beat anyone, nor did he ever think of playing a forward pass.
Ogbenne has a fair bit of the ball but I dont remember him beating a man before he was replaced. Hopefully there is more to come from him in future games.
Campbell if nothing else, is consistent. The problem is that he has been consistently poor and lacking in any effort to create himself space or link in with the rest of the team. I doubt he even broke into a sweat. This, I feel is a big part of our problem. We have a lot of possession of the ball but it is played around in front of the opposition as the likes of Campbell are not stretching and moving their defence or trying to create space/work the channels meaning that the attacking midfielders are having to go sideways/backwards too often. We allow the opposition to get back into a defensive shape and look unable to break through the lines.

I do believe that it will come good eventually but it is worrying that we have the players to be a top 6 side and they are not showing this on the pitch at the moment.

Players we haven’t really tried this season yet:-

Polendakov - We are crying out for a proper right back and we paid money for this kid. He can’t do any worse than Godfrey and may even do better
Got a couple of mates who have too much time on their hands and have seen him play and reckon he's a proper player.

Based on Godfrey on Satdy, I believe my lad who plays RB in the Sheffield U14's Div C couldn't have done any worse. So if we have young bucks who look decent, have the right attitude, actually belong to us - I'm not sure why we'd persist with shit loan players ahead of them.

Why would Wilder have been after Godfrey last Jan window when we had Hamza wish we still had had Hamza.

Cannom the enigma.

Who mentioned Jan?

Additionally, couldn't it have been possible we were in for him before we brought in Hamza?

Only rumours, but i'd say Godfrey is exactly the type of player Wilder has a history of bringing in.

Normally agree with your reports DB but what I saw yesterday was a marked improvement on previous performances. There's still a lot wrong (worrying gaps at the back, lack of shots on target) but the team was playing with more urgency and seemed at least to be trying.

We came within seconds of our first point of the season. If we'd hung on I suspect many people would be describing yesterday as our best performance of the season (which isn't saying much I know).

Bitterly disappointed to lose but there were signs of improvement.
It was. It was better, and I also agree with Wilder when he said there's a mental fragility in the group now that will take longer to sort than one week on the training ground.
We huffed and puffed for long periods, but we were so slow and methodical. They kept it tight but we did very little to unlock the door.

Godfrey went to Italy In the 2024 summer window for £10m....in Jan 2025 he went to Prem side Ipswich on loan....i think its pie in the sky thinking if we were competing for him against either of those two senario's.

Perhaps the reason we didn't get him? Doesn't mean wilder wasn't interested.

I think you're missing the original point you made.

Perhaps conveniently.

My original point is valid...i dont think Wilder would have had any interest or the ability (for £10m) to sign Godfrey...................if you have proof to counter what is my opinion please post it.

Who's signing him for 10m?

You said he isn't a player Wilder would be interested in (an opinion).

My opinion is that he 100% fits the profile of a player Wilder would want.

I agree, Deadbeat. Although the system doesn’t suit the players some of them are putting in disgraceful performances. The fans will turn on them very soon if this carries on and they will deserve it. CW also needs to change the formation sharpish - as the system isn’t working and he will be a stupid as Selles if he keeps doing the same thing and expecting different results.

"we have an absolute collection of lightweight passengers who all have the heart of a pea and seemingly no not have the fight/desire to be a competent Championship professional footballer."

Exactly as I saw it - just sat in despair thinking of the days of Bash, Baldock, O'Connell, Fleck, Sharp etc etc who would fight for everything, be brave and drag each other through. There is no-one capable of dragging this team through a game - if Hamer isn't on it or able to pull a rabbit out of a hat, we have no hope. My only hope is that Wilder will correct the horrendous summer in January, but by that point we may well be cut adrift.

Hello, Charlton fan sharing some thoughts on the game.

I felt it was close, nothing in it, and in all honesty, you have been the team we have met with the most quality so far. We are quite unfortunate to not be further up the table, as we battered Leicester, done very well vs Bristol City, and Millwall, but only got 2 out of a possible 9 points to show for it.

Your quality in the squad is ridiculous, and makes it a complete anomaly that you are where you are. Most teams in this league would love Hamer, O'Hare, Tangana, Burrows, Peck, Campbell etc.

I rate Wilder extremely highly and was gutted back in 2016? When he went to yous over us, one of the best English managers of the last two decades imho.

I am gonna have a dabble on yous to make play-offs and I would honestly say there is a 0% chance of any danger at all this season.

I look forward to the return tie at the Valley where I am expecting a much tougher game, and where hopefully I can speak to a few of you before the game, as bad weather prevented this.

I hope you don't mind me sharing my vlog for my pov of the game:

Wish you all the best for the rest of the season, as someone who lived in Sheffield for over half a year, I am quite fond of your city and the people :)
